Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universalist Quarterly and General Review, 1847, Vol. 4 IT is a very interesting and instructive fact, that, among those who in every age have been distinguished for their scientific and literary attainments, appear the names of men who, during their whole lives, were compelled to contend with obstacles which to common minds seem utterly impossible to be overcome. For the senses are the avenues by which the mind obtains its knowledge of the material world; and it would seem that when one of these is rendered useless, the mind could at most be but imperfectly developed. And yet, if history is to be credited, there have been in almost every age blind men, (we mention blind men, because sight is regarded as the most important of the senses, ) whose misfortune has only served to stimulate them to greater exertions in the acquisition of knowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 4: April and August, 1829 It isjust to take notice, in abatement ofthis objection, such as. It is, on the score of prolixity, that M. Sismondi has given, at the end of each volume, an excellent summary of the contents, serving as a synoptical compendium of the history, not only for reference, but for information. He had adopted the same plan in his Ita lian Republics, and there are, perhaps, few books, whether of a narrative or argumentative character, in which it might not be usefully employed. The increasing extent of literature will re quire every advantage of machinery to aid the limited capacities of intellectual labour. The index-maker will probably soon take a station in literary usefulness and respectability not much below the lexicographer; in many instances his duties exacta higher de gree of acuteness and knowledge. But in the present state of things this task can in general be only executed with perfect ad vantage by the author himself. Henceforth the Review is to be national and sec ula1, devoted to philosophy, science, politics, literature, and the general interests of civilization, especially American civilization. It ceases to be a theological Review, and though it will defend religion, and prove itself in the prin ciples which govern it truly Christian, it will defend the special interests of the Catholic Church only as they are implied ln the freedom of conscience and the religious and civil liberty of the citizen. The Editor has not changed his faith, or abated ln his zeal for the Communion to which he has been warmly attached for the last twenty years, and whose doctrine and discipline he has labored as well as he could to explain and defend but, for reasons satisfactory to himself, he Withdraws his Review from the field of theologi. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'One of the most powerful books in the social sciences ever written. ... A must-read' Thomas Piketty 'The twentieth century's most prophetic critic of capitalism' Prospect Karl Polanyi's landmark 1944 work is one of the earliest and most powerful critiques of unregulated markets. Tracing the history of capitalism from the great transformation of the industrial revolution onwards, he shows that there has been nothing 'natural' about the market state. Instead of reducing human relations and our environment to mere commodities, the economy must always be embedded in civil society. Describing the 'avalanche of social dislocation' of his time, Polanyi's hugely influential work is a passionate call to protect our common humanity. 'Polanyi's vision for an alternative economy re-embedded in politics and social relations offers a refreshing alternative' Guardian 'Polanyi exposes the myth of the free market' Joseph Stiglitz With a new introduction by Gareth Dale
