Book excerpt: From earliest Stone Age in Africa to 20th century California, our ancestors smashed rock to make tools. The tools from broken stones formed the most important survival kit ever invented and is surprisingly similar the world over. Elements of that kit live on today in remote corners of the globe among people close to the earth. The most important survival kit ever invented, it altered the very shape of the human species and for millions of years was truly a universal tool kit. The universal tool kit endured and accompanied man into the New World where it is strongly represented in all levels of archaeology and the ethnology of Native California. This book explores the origin, description and function of baseline stone tools and its practical applications and templates of manufacture. It also looks at stone age spear throwers and how they were used.

The book is aimed at the teacher who wishes to respond to the diversity of learning needs of children that are placed within their mainstream classroom, without teaching each child differently. The advice given for teaching all learners aged 7 to 14 will help you ensure that you are providing well for all your learners that only a very few will need substantially different support. Rather than focussing on the differences between learners, the common strategies that will enhance the learning of all, based on the common concerns of class teachers working with pupils who have Special Educational Needs, are identified. Structured around the three areas of memory, motivation, and communication which are key to addressing inclusion friendly teaching, the book covers: - the memory friendly classroom - the motivation friendly classroom - the communication-friendly classroom Ideal for all classroom teachers working with children aged 7 to 14, and with plenty of supporting material available to download from the SAGE website, which works in tandem with each chapter of the book, this toolkit will make inclusive teaching a reality.

Book Boundaries of a Complex World

Download or read book Boundaries of a Complex World written by Andrei Ludu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-24 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2nd edition of this book provides novel topics and studyies in boundaries of networks and Big Data Systems. The central theme of this book is the extent to which the structure of the free dynamical boundaries of a system controls the evolution of the system as a whole. Applying three orthogonal types of thinking - mathematical, constructivist and morphological, it illustrates these concepts using applications to selected problems from the social and life sciences, as well as economics. In a broader context, it introduces and reviews some modern mathematical approaches to the science of complex systems. Standard modeling approaches (based on non-linear differential equations, dynamic systems, graph theory, cellular automata, stochastic processes, or information theory) are suitable for studying local problems. However they cannot simultaneously take into account all the different facets and phenomena of a complex system, and new approaches are required to solve the challenging problem of correlations between phenomena at different levels and hierarchies, their self-organization and memory-evolutive aspects, the growth of additional structures and are ultimately required to explain why and how such complex systems can display both robustness and flexibility. This graduate-level text addresses a broader interdisciplinary audience, keeping the mathematical level essentially uniform throughout the book, and involving only basic elements from calculus, algebra, geometry and systems theory.

Book Alasdair Urquhart on Nonclassical and Algebraic Logic and Complexity of Proofs

Download or read book Alasdair Urquhart on Nonclassical and Algebraic Logic and Complexity of Proofs written by Ivo Düntsch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the work of Alasdair Urquhart. The book starts out with an introduction to and an overview of Urquhart’s work, and an autobiographical essay by Urquhart. This introductory section is followed by papers on algebraic logic and lattice theory, papers on the complexity of proofs, and papers on philosophical logic and history of logic. The final section of the book contains a response to the papers by Urquhart. Alasdair Urquhart has made extremely important contributions to a variety of fields in logic. He produced some of the earliest work on the semantics of relevant logic. He provided the undecidability of the logics R (of relevant implication) and E (of relevant entailment), as well as some of their close neighbors. He proved that interpolation fails in some of those systems. Urquhart has done very important work in complexity theory, both about the complexity of proofs in classical and some nonclassical logics. In pure algebra, he has produced a representation theorem for lattices and some rather beautiful duality theorems. In addition, he has done important work in the history of logic, especially on Bertrand Russell, including editing Volume four of Russell’s Collected Papers.
