They ought to be sober, logical, and self-consistent. When these qualities are absent, Homeric criticism may be described, in the recent words of Blass, as a swamp haunted by wan dering fires, will 0' the wisps. Book Elements of Unity in the Homeric Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Unity in the Homeric Poems Classic Reprint written by Edward Farquhar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Unity in the Homeric Poems The phase of the total Iliad as it draws toward its closing acts is notable. A change comes over it something like that in the later plays of Shakespeare as compared with the earlier. The rhythm seems insensibly modified, not strik ingly as in the other case; there is less tune. Deeper harmony; mo-re abruptness; nearer sense of the subject, enlargement of its features, as if words could not quite cover it, and re tirement of the broader groupings; the various classifications of cities, sections and allies, so familiar in the earlier books, give place by degrees to mere Greek and Trojans, then to the leading personages alone, as in'the conduct of a broad laid novel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homer: An Introduction to the Iliad and the Odyssey The purpose of this book is to furnish, in a compact form, a general introduction to the study of Homer. The four chapters into which it is divided deal respectively with four aspects of the subject - (i) The general character of the Homeric poems, and their place in the history of literature (2) their historical value, as illustrating an early period of Hellenic life: (3) their influence in the ancient world, and the criticism bestowed on them in antiquity (4) the modern inquiry into their origin. So far as I am aware, there is no one book, English or foreign, which collects the principal results of modern study in each of these departments. Download or read book Homer written by Andrew Ford and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Ford here addresses, in a manner both engaging and richly informed, the perennial questions of what poetry is, how it came to be, and what it is for. Focusing on the critical moment in Western literature when the heroic tales of the Greek oral tradition began to be preserved in writing, he examines these questions in the light of Homeric poetry. Through fresh readings of the Iliad and the Odyssey, and referring to other early epics as well, Ford deepens our understanding of what poetry was at a time before written texts, before a developed sense of authorship, and before the existence of institutionalized criticism. Placing what is known about Homer's art in the wider context of Homer's world, Ford traces the effects of the oral tradition upon the development of the epic and addresses such issues as the sources of the poet's inspiration and the generic constraints upon epic composition. After exploring Homer's poetic vocabulary and his fictional and mythical representations of the art of singing, Ford reconstructs an idea of poetry much different from that put forth by previous interpreters. Arguing that Homer grounds his project in religious rather than literary or historical terms, he concludes that archaic poetry claims to give a uniquely transparent and immediate rendering of the past. Homer: The Poetry of the Past will be stimulating and enjoyable reading for anyone interested in the traditions of poetry, as well as for students and scholars in the fields of classics, literary theory and literary history, and intellectual history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homer: And the Epic This method, we argue here, is erroneous. It has its origin in the arguments of Wolf against the possible exist ence Of a long continuous early Greek epic. These argu ments led men to look for the traces Of joins in the poems, and to find them, to hunt for the resulting discrepancies, and to discover them. But Wolf's a priori arguments, we try to show, are no longer valid. It is not impossible that a long early Greek poem might have been composed, and might survive. This being so, we plead for wider and more generous views of the Iliad and Odyssey, for a study of poetry as poetry, not as a dubious clause in a Bill, or a doubtful statement by an historian. Book The Homer of Aristotle Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Homer of Aristotle Classic Reprint written by David Samuel Margoliouth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homer of Aristotle This monograph is intended as a supplement to the writer's edition of Aristotle's Poetics, l the results of which both for text and interpretation are here assumed.2 It was shown there that the initial words of the Defini tion of Tragedy should be rendered literally The feigning of a virtuous experience, which interpreted from the author's ethical and political theories means Fiction about kings and queens. And though the philosopher does not like Plato identify the Homeric style with Tragedy, he holds that in these essentials the two coincide and the Unity which he postulates in Tragedy is found by him to an unsurpassed extent in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The following is an attempt at working out these theorems from the hints which the treatise offers and on the lines which it suggests. The text of the Homeric Poems employed is that of Monro and Allen in the Oxford Classical Series; and the Translations of Butcher, Lang, Leaf and Myers are assumed to be correct, except where differences are noted. General reference is made to the Greek Grammar Of R. Kuhner, the Homeric Lexicon Of H. Ebeling, and the Dictionary of Greek Proper Names of W. Pape for such matters as come within their scope. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer, Vol. 2: With English Notes It is generally held that the Tragics preferred to take their themes from certain later, inferior, and merely supplementary poems, rather than from the Iliad and the Odyssey, either be cause they found the incidents of the former more fit for their purpose, or because they hesitated to trench on ground which they regarded as almost consecrated by the unique genius of the Divine Homer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lay of Dolon: The Tenth Book of Homer's ILI AN author has been known to palh'ate his boldness in making a book by saying he has written it to supply a want. The same plea is ventured on behalf of the present work. It may, at first sight, seem difficult to make good such a justification for a contribution to the Homeric Question. The literature of that problem is already of a fullness to defy the bibliographer. And it grows incessantly. Those who try to keep abreast of it in its many branches long for a pause which does not come. There was a brief but welcome lull some years ago. Controversy almost ceased for a time, while disputants fell back and sought to reckon up gain and loss. But the Lachmann drum was beaten afresh; and the Cretan discoveries, the novelties of the Saga-searchers, the restless strivings of the Culturists, the speculations of Professor Murray and the arguments of Mr. Andrew Lang, have all helped to stimulate discussion. 73x06 8' Miss Stawell has dealt a heavy blow where it was least expected. The contest is active once more. In Homeric phrase they battle on relent lessly. An enumeration of only the treatises and essays which have appeared during the four years that the present book has occupied, would require a bulky Appendix.
