Book Peacekeeping and Related Stability Operations

Download or read book Peacekeeping and Related Stability Operations written by Nina M. Serafino and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most crucial and difficult tasks in peacekeeping and related stability operations is creating a secure and stable environment, both for the foreign peacekeepers and for the indigenous population. During the past decade, the United States and the international community have tried various approaches to providing that security. Most of these approaches have included the use of United Nations International Civilian Police (UNCIVPOL), whose forces are contributed on a case by case basis by UN member states. (While other countries usually contribute police personnel from their own national forces, the United States contracts those it contributes through a private corporation). In a few cases, such as Afghanistan and Iraq at this time, coalition and US military forces, and not the United Nation, train and work with indigenous police forces to provide security. This book presents an up-to-date evaluation of current issues in peacekeeping.

Book The United States Navy and United Nations Operations

Download or read book The United States Navy and United Nations Operations written by George B. Allison and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations has sponsored peace-keeping operations in countries all over the world since 1947, but naval forces have rarely been involved, a surprising circumstance, given the utility of navies. The tenets of the National Security Strategy apply to UN peacekeeping operations, and US Naval involvement in these operations would promote US national goals. There is evidence that the UN may soon be involved in maritime operations, and it has begun experimenting with small seagoing forces, for there are many missions applicable to UN control. Over the years, the UN has developed doctrine for the ground forces in peace-keeping operations, but if naval forces are to be integrated into peace-keeping, there are several issues that must be resolved, including command and control, sovereignty, the Law of the Sea, and financing and logistics. These issues are resolvable, and participation of the US Navy in UN operations is recommended. United Nations, peace-keeping, U.S. Navy, naval peace-keeping, peacetime contingency operations.

Book Anchor of Resolve a History of U S Naval Forces Central Command Fifth Fleet

Download or read book Anchor of Resolve a History of U S Naval Forces Central Command Fifth Fleet written by Robert Schneller and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-05-27 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated history covers the history of the U.S. Navy in the Middle East. America's interests in the Middle East, southwest Asia, and eastern Africa date almost to the founding of the nation. Since World War II, the Navy has been the first line of defense for these interests. From the establishment of the Middle East Force (MEF) in 1949 through the beginning of the 21st century, the U.S. Navy served as a force for stability and peace in the region. The Navy's presence helped prevent regional crises from escalating into wars, enforce international sanctions, and minimize damage done by regional conflicts to American and allied interests. The work concentrates on the Navy's command relationships, roles and missions, and operations in the period leading up to the First Gulf War, the war itself, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Naval Historical Center completed this illustrated history of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/Fifth Fleet to accompany the exhibit it installed in the headquarters building on board Naval Support Activity Bahrain. In keeping with the Center's mission of supporting the operating forces, the purpose of this book is to inform visitors to the headquarters and American Sailors serving in the Middle East about the Navy's presence in Arabian waters and the variety of missions the Navy has conducted there, in peace and in war. From the presidency of George Washington through the beginning of the Cold War, Americans have forged and maintained ties with the peoples of the Middle East. These bonds strengthened in 1949 with the establishment of the Middle East Force and a permanent U.S. naval presence in the Arabian Gulf. They grew even stronger when America committed itself to the defense of its friends in the region, establishing Central Command and its naval component, Naval Forces Central Command, in 1983. The United States Navy remains an anchor of resolve in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Central Command area of responsibility. The author, Dr. Robert J. Schneller Jr., is well qualified to present this informative and well-illustrated history. He is co-author of a book on the Navy's role in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and since 9/11 has been researching and writing about the Navy's role in the Global War on terrorism. As with each of our histories, the views expressed herein are those of the author alone and not those of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/Fifth Fleet, the Department of the Navy, or any other U.S. government agency.

  • Author : Paula Holmes-Eber
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press

Download or read book Culture in Conflict written by Paula Holmes-Eber and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the irregular warfare challenges facing the U.S. in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2005, General James Mattis—then commander of Marine Corps Combat Development Command—established a new Marine Corps cultural initiative. The goal was simple: teach Marines to interact successfully with the local population in areas of conflict. The implications, however, were anything but simple: transform an elite military culture founded on the principles of "locate, close with, and destroy the enemy" into a "culturally savvy" Marine Corps. Culture in Conflict: Irregular Warfare, Culture Policy, and the Marine Corps examines the conflicted trajectory of the Marine Corps' efforts to institute a radical culture policy into a military organization that is structured and trained to fight conventional wars. More importantly, however, it is a compelling book about America's shifting military identity in a new world of unconventional warfare.
