Book excerpt: This volume is one of a series of five prepared by various authors, designed to be useful and instructive regarding the long history of the United States Army Chaplaincy. The emphasis throughout is on how chaplains did their ministry in the contexts of both war and peace. The series seeks to present as full and as balanced an account as limitations of space and research time permit. The bibliography in each volume offers opportunities for further research. This volume covers the period from 1865 to 1920. Chaplain Earl F. Stover, a Regular Army chaplain of the United Methodist Church, is the writer of this volume. Chaplain Stover is a native of Illinois and was Pastor of a civilian congregation in Alton, Illinois, before his entry on active duty in 1957. He has served at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Scott Air Force Base, Illinois; Fort Bliss, Texas; US Army Chaplain Center and School, Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York; and overseas in Germany and Vietnam. He has been awarded the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.

Gorgas recognized the threat of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to American troops. What the Army needed was some "good tuberculosis men." Despite the efforts of the nations best "tuberculosis men," the disease would become a leading cause of World War I disability discharges and veterans benefits. The fact that tuberculosis patients often experienced cycles in which they recovered their health and then fell ill again challenged government officials to judge the degree to which a person was disabled and required government care and support. This book tracks the impact of tuberculosis on the US Army from the late 1890s, when it was a ubiquitous presence in society, to the 1960s when it became a curable and controllable disease.

Book A Persistent Fire

Download or read book A Persistent Fire written by Timothy S. Mallard and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The phrase military ethics is sometimes regarded as a contradiction in terms. To some, the idea of ethics seems out of touch with modern realities and sensibilities. "How can an external moral standard dictate one's actions?" some might ask. Ethics can therefore bring up memories of bygone eras that seem irrelevant. Coupled with the qualifier military, ethics can seem even more puzzling. Ethics is not merely a concern for past eras, but is increasingly relevant in an age of rapid technological and societal development. From its beginning, our nation's military leaders have viewed ethics as imperative to the task of warfighting. This is a refrain echoed by contributions to this book who address a range of issues concerning political actors, technological capabilities, and societal shifts of the past and the present. And in commemorating the centenary of World War I, it is appropriate to consider the ethics of warfare. This book helpfully relates lessons from the past to the major ethical issues of modern warfare. By providing diverse reflections on the history of military ethics and challenges of contemporary and future warfare, this book serves as a repository of meaningful material for a new generation of warfighters to develop their own faculties of ethical judgment"--

The productions are identified in terms of plot, cast, personnel, critical reaction, and significance in the history of New York theater and culture. In addition to a chronological list of all Broadway productions between 1919 and 2007, the book also includes approximately 600 important productions performed on Broadway before 1919.
