Book International Cooperation in Cold War Europe

Download or read book International Cooperation in Cold War Europe written by Daniel Stinsky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed in 1947, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was the first postwar international organization dedicated to economic cooperation in Europe. Linking the universalism of the UN to European regionalism, both Cold War superpowers, the USA and the Soviet Union, were founding members of the UNECE. Building on the League of Nations' difficult heritage, and in an increasingly challenging political environment, the UNECE's mission was to facilitate European cooperation transcending the boundaries set by the Cold War . With a number of competitor organizations set against it, the UNECE managed to carve out a niche for itself, setting norms and standards that still have an impact on the everyday lives of millions in Europe and beyond today. Working against an overwhelming geopolitical trend, UNECE succeeded in bridging the Cold War divide on several occasions, and maintained a broad system of contacts across the Iron Curtain. This book provides a unique study of this important but hitherto under-researched international organization. Incorporating research on the Cold War, the history of internationalism and European integration, Stinsky weaves these different threads of historical enquiry into a single analytical narrative.

Book The EU the UN and Collective Security

Download or read book The EU the UN and Collective Security written by Joachim Krause and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the effectiveness of multilateralism in ensuring collective security and, in particular, the EU's role in this process. In 1992, shortly after the end of the Cold War, a Security Council Summit in New York reaffirmed the salience of the system of collective security and stated the determination of the Heads of State to maintain it as the prime international instrument for preserving peace. Twenty years later, however, the record of collective security as well as of multilateralism has not been very encouraging. The system of collective security, as enshrined in the United Nations (UN) Charter, failed repeatedly to accomplish its mandate in the 1990s and has led to controversial debates in the United States and Europe that reached a climax during the Iraq crisis in 2002/03. The volume draws upon both theoretical and empirical research to answer the following core questions: What are the reasons that have made multilateralism either effective or ineffective in the field of peacekeeping, peace preservation and peacebuilding? How can multilateralism be made more effective? How can attempts made by Europe to render UN multilateralism in the security area more efficient be assessed? This book will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding/peacekeeping, EU policy, the UN, security studies and IR in general.

Book The European Union and International Organizations

Download or read book The European Union and International Organizations written by Knud Erik Jørgensen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to explore the complex relationship between the European Union and International Organizations, and to fill a remarkably wide gap in existing literature on the topic. Analysing the way in which the EU engages in some of the most important international organizations, this book outlines a framework for analysis within this thriving subject of study. By demonstrating how the EU supports ‘effective multilateralism’ and global governance, as well as furthering developments within foreign policy, this volume adopts a novel perspective on the EU as an international player. Seeking to move the focus of study beyond the European Union as itself an international organization, contributors set out to demonstrate EU aspirations to act within international organizations. The volume’s key features include: the first comprehensive study on this topic eight case studies of the EU, including its role within the UN, WTO, NATO, and the ICC contributions from both internationally renowned political scientists and economists The European Union and International Organizations will be of vital interest to students and scholars of international relations, European Politics, Political Science, and International Organisations. It will also be of interest to a wider readership including policy makers, diplomats, and journalists.

Book excerpt: Comparing non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the United Nations and the European Union across a range of different issue areas, this volume examines how the choice of venue and institution affects the strategies of NGOs. Book excerpt: In recent years, cooperation between the United Nations (UN) and the European Union(EU) has grown exponentially. In this contribution I consider the motivations of the EU'schoice for the UN and the institutional complexities involved in the UN-EU relationship, both internally in the EU in order to obtain a better coordination among its 27 MemberStates, and externally, concerning the status of the EU within the UN system. After a briefoverview of EU-UN cooperation in the areas of human development and security, I pointto the uncertainties which both organizations face in their current reform processes, inparticular the as of yet unresolved fate of the EU's Constitutional Treaty, which containsprovisions that could lead to a more unified EU representation in the UN.
