Book Women and the United Nations

Download or read book Women and the United Nations written by Filomina Chioma Steady and published by Schenkman Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its founding in 1945, the United Nations has placed the advancement of women at the forefront of its agenda. The UN Charter, for instance, is the first international document to recognize the equal rights of men and women. Yet how beneficial have UN programs been for women in the developing world? How must the UN change to make future programs more effective? And most importantly, what does the experience of women working within the UN system tell us about the UN's commitment to gender equity? Women and the United Nations: Reflections and New Horizons addresses these and other questions. Gathered here are papers and statements presented at a seminar organized by the UNIDO Forum of Women Professionals and held in Vienna in May 1995. The seminar marked the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and served as a preparatory activity for the Fourth World Conference on Women, to be held in Beijing in September 1995. The purpose of the seminar was to examine gender issues as they affect international development and especially to evaluate the UN's progress as a role model in the equitable treatment of women. The papers and statements, by well-known scholars and policy makers, address such issues as the gender implications of the UN's agenda for equality, development, and peace; women's role in the field operations and in technological advances, especially information technology; the dangers of technological change for women's health and the environment; improving women's status in the UN system; and increasing women's participation in economic and political decision making. In addition to a foreword by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, this book also includesthe full text of the seminar's recommendations for action to advance the status of women both within and outside the UN system. An appendix contains three resolutions drafted in March and April 1995 by the Commission on the Status of Women concerning trafficking in women and girls, the taking of women and children as hostages, and the improvement of women's status in the UN secretariat. This book emphasizes the need for women to take a central role in the design and implementation of policies and programs to promote sustainable development. Scholars, activists, and policy makers will value Women and the United Nations as a reference tool, and will find its analyses and prescriptions for action provocative and stimulating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Devaki Jain opens the doors of the United Nations and shows how it has changed the female half of the world -- and vice versa. Women, Development, and the UN is a book that every global citizen, government leader, journalist, academic, and self-respecting woman should read." -- Gloria Steinem "Devaki Jain's book nurtures your optimism in this terrible war-torn decade by describing how women succeeded in empowering both themselves and the United Nations to work toward a global leadership inspired by human dignity." -- Fatema Mernissi In Women, Development, and the UN, internationally noted development economist and activist Devaki Jain traces the ways in which women have enriched the work of the United Nations from the time of its founding in 1945. Synthesizing insights from the extensive literature on women and development and from her own broad experience, Jain reviews the evolution of the UN's programs aimed at benefiting the women of developing nations and the impact of women's ideas about rights, equality, and social justice on UN thinking and practice regarding development. Jain presents this history from the perspective of the southern hemisphere, which recognizes that development issues often look different when viewed from the standpoint of countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The book highlights the contributions of the four global women's conferences in Mexico City, Copenhagen, Nairobi, and Beijing in raising awareness, building confidence, spreading ideas, and creating alliances. The history that Jain chronicles reveals both the achievements of committed networks of women in partnership with the UN and the urgent work remaining to bring equality and justice to the world and its women.

Book The United Nations and International Law

Download or read book The United Nations and International Law written by Christopher C. Joyner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-04-28 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides students and scholars with a text that examines, explains, and appraises contributions made by the United Nations to contemporary international law and the law-creating process. The authors consider how UN institutions have made the law, what law has been made, and the extent to which that law has been meaningfully accepted by and evidenced in contemporary state practice. The study first deals with processes and measures that cut across law-making, covering practical as well as conceptual aspects. Then the substantive law is addressed in terms of the different fields of activity that the United Nations has made subject to legal rules and processes. Some chapters cover prominent areas, such as human rights, use of force, and economic relations; others deal with topics which have not previously been examined with sufficient care, such as labor, the environment, refugees, and women. The book's final section deals with the internal law of the UN system itself - the international civil services and financial contributions.

Book Women Politics and the United Nations

Download or read book Women Politics and the United Nations written by Anne Winslow and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1995-07-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have women used global institutions and the networking possible through them to assure women's emergence on the world stage? How successful have women been at the United Nations and at international conferences over the years in their pressures for equality and for a full partnership with men? To what extent have women gained a foothold in the political arena internationally, and have they been able to exert their influence and to improve their situation? Expert participants and scholars give varying perspectives and insights about the history of women's worldwide efforts through governmental and nongovernmental organizations. They trace the role of the UN Commission on the Status of Women and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. They analyze the politics of the three world women's conferences in the 1970s and the 1980s, the evolution of institutions set up as catalysts to resolve key issues in developing countries, and the changing conditions for women in the UN Secretariat and specialized agencies. These unusual appraisals and a lengthy bibliography are for interdisciplinary audiences of women and men around the world—essential background to understanding the 1995 UN conference in Beijing.

Book Gender and Diplomacy

Download or read book Gender and Diplomacy written by Jennifer A. Cassidy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a detailed discussion of the role of women in diplomacy and a global narrative of their current and historical role within it. The last century has seen the Ministries of Foreign Affairs (MFAs) experience seismic shifts in their policies concerning the entry, role and agency of women within their institutional make-up. Despite these changes, and the promise that true gender equality offers to the diplomatic craft, the role of women in the diplomatic sphere continues to remain overlooked, and placed on the fringes of diplomatic scholarship. This volume brings together established scholars and experienced diplomatic practitioners in an attempt to unveil the story of women in diplomacy, in a context which is historical, theoretical and empirical. In line with feminist critical thought, the objective of this volume is to theorize and empirically demonstrate the understanding of diplomacy as a gendered practice and study. The aims of are three-fold: 1) expose and confront the gender of diplomacy; 2) shed light on the historical involvement of women in diplomatic practice in spite of systemic barriers and restrictions, with a focus on critical junctures of diplomatic institutional formation and the diplomatic entitlements which were created for women at these junctures; 3) examine the current state of women in diplomacy and evaluate the rate of progress towards a gender-even playing field on the basis thereof. This book will be of much interest to students of diplomacy studies, gender studies, foreign policy and international relations.
