Book Talking Democracy at the United Nations

Download or read book Talking Democracy at the United Nations written by Sophie Eisentraut and published by Nomos Verlag. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: ?Zweifel?s persuasive and highly relevant book is a significant contribution to the literature on IO governance.? ?Edward McMahon, University of VermontDo international organizations represent the interests of the global citizenry? Or are they merely vehicles for the agendas of powerful nations and special interests? Thomas Zweifel explores this increasingly contentious issue, deftly blending history, theory, and case studies.Zweifel?s analysis covers both regional organizations (e.g., the EU, NAFTA, NATO, the AU) and such global institutions as the United Nations, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization. Book excerpt: In One World Democracy, authors Jerry Tetalman and Byron Belitsos describe the only known long-term solution to the urgent global problems that threaten the survival of humankind: democratic world government and the rule of law at the global level—a federation of all nations. This book provides the definitive overview for our time of how humanity can replace the United Nations with a genuine world democracy. In this future world democracy, the executive branch will be strictly limited by a separation of powers—world courts, a global bill of rights, and a world legislature—all under a world constitution. One World Democracy is directed at today’s progressives who are ready to implement tomorrow’s solutions to the global crisis. Book Democracy and Development

Book excerpt: This Discussion Paper presents the conclusions and recommendations from two round table discussions on the relationship between democratic governance and the achievement of development outcomes held in 2008 and 2011. At the first meeting, participants exchanged views and shared research findings on the complex linkages between democracy and development and how gains in development can contribute to democracy. This meeting also identified areas of policy development to improve multilateral action, particularly by the UN, in the critical areas of democracy building that can enhance sustainable development processes. The second meeting looked more specifically at the role of the UN in simultaneously promoting democracy and development agendas and, in particular, how normative, strategic and operational aspects of UN engagement can be developed to pursue these mutually reinforcing aims. Participants deliberated on the broader strategic issues of how the UN reconciles the political aspects of UN engagement in transitions to democracy and the more 'operational' aspects of UN engagement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores UN bureaucracy and the development dysfunction it sows in four 'most different' African countries: Angola, Botswana, Namibia, and Tanzania. Wilson's original purpose for researching this book was to uncover new solutions to some of the United Nations' most vexing implementation problems. Yet, as research unfolded, it became clear that the reasons for those problems lay tangled up in bureaucratic and philosophical quagmires of a much more fundamental nature. The United Nations and Democracy in Africa is the documentation not only of these bureaucratic and philosophical absurdities that find expression through development practice, but also the journey of the author from ardent defender of the UN to profound sceptic.

Download or read book Wiki Government written by Beth Simone Noveck and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaborative democracy—government with the people—is a new vision of governance in the digital age. Wiki Government explains how to translate the vision into reality. Beth Simone Noveck draws on her experience in creating Peer-to-Patent, the federal government's first social networking initiative, to show how technology can connect the expertise of the many to the power of the few. In the process, she reveals what it takes to innovate in government. Launched in 2007, Peer-to-Patent connects patent examiners to volunteer scientists and technologists via the web. These dedicated but overtaxed officials decide which of the million-plus patent applications currently in the pipeline to approve. Their decisions help determine which start-up pioneers a new industry and which disappears without a trace. Patent examiners have traditionally worked in secret, cut off from essential information and racing against the clock to rule on lengthy, technical claims. Peer-to-Patent broke this mold by creating online networks of self-selecting citizen experts and channeling their knowledge and enthusiasm into forms that patent examiners can easily use. Peer-to-Patent shows how policymakers can improve decisionmaking by harnessing networks to public institutions. By encouraging, coordinating, and structuring citizen participation, technology can make government both more open and more effective at solving today's complex social and economic problems. Wiki Government describes how this model can be applied in a wide variety of settings and offers a fundamental rethinking of effective governance and democratic legitimacy for the twenty-first century.
