Book The United Church of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The United Church of the United States Classic Reprint written by Charles W. Shields and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United Church of the United States It has been becoming evident to many thoughtful observers that the chief Christian problem of our age is the Reunion of Christendom, and that the most favorable conditions for its solution are found in this New World, where the churches and denominations of the Old World have become compacted together within a new political environment, yet with perfect freedom of action and intercourse. The growth of public interest in the question during the past ten years has been surprising. If the present volume have no higher value, it may serve to mark the course of opinion in this new direction, and to afford some outlook for the future. It contains the results not only of private study, but of conference with representative thinkers holding all the possible views in respect to the problem of American Church Unity. The interest of the writer in the subject dates as far back as the year 1862, when he published a Manual of Worship in the United States Army and Navy, compiled from ancient liturgies and modern formularies, and jointly recommended by eminent clergymen of all denominations. This was followed in 1864 by his edition of the Book of Common Prayer, as amended by the Presbyterian Divines in the Royal Commission of 1661, and as designed, with other more special objects, "to increase the spirit of catholicity and fraternity among such Churches of the Reformation as originally contributed to the formation of the Prayer-book, by restoring to more general use those liturgical formulas which are their several production or common inheritance and, next to the Holy Scriptures, the closest visible bonds of their unity." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in America This volume belongs to a series intended to give a com prehensive history of National Churches. In sending forth that portion which treats of the American Church, it may be difficult to convince some of my readers of the propriety of calling the Protestant Episcopal Church the National Church of America. Strictly speaking, there has not been for many years any religious body in the United States which could, either from recognition by law and custom or from numerical predominance, claim to be the National Church. But when it is remembered that in the beginning, what is popularly known as the Episcopal Church was by charter and law established in the older colonies; that more than any other ecclesiastical organisation she had to do with constituting the nation, and, in the period of the Civil War, with its maintenance and reunion; and that, while conservative and Catholic in her character, she yet is distinctively American in spirit - there would seem to be ample justification for thus using the title American Church. A still further warrant for this use may be found in the present position and prospects of this Church, as described in the concluding chapter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church for Americans The concern which this book manifests for the Ecclesiastical side of Christianity and the little it has to say about its spiritual and practical aspects, is due to what the writer considers to be, just now, the special religious need of our time and country. This is not instruction in the moral requirements of Christianity so much as the establishment of the fact that Christ founded a Church which has come down to us, and with some branch of which it is the privilege and duty of all to identify themselves. The idea that one Church is as good as another and that consequently it prac tically makes no difference to which we belong, is responsible for the enormous non-church element of the United States, which, according to the last census, amounted to more than half of the whole population, and for the loose hold which all bodies of Christians have upon their constituency. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Manual of the Reformed Church in the United States It was found, however, that at least one publication of this order was already in existence, and upon reflection and consultation he was induced to change his plan, and to prepare a volume consisting mainly of historical sketches illustrative of the history of the Reformed Church from the days of the Reformation down to the present time. Some of these sketches were, at the time of their composition, printed in "The Guardian," a monthly magazine of which the author is editor, and though not strictly consecutive they are inserted in deference to the wishes of partial friends. In its present farm the book is intended to serve a double purpose. While it furnishes reading for the family, it also claims to be useful as a book of reference by enabling the reader to trace the career of individual ministers and the chronological order of the meetings of ecclesiastical bodies. In the preparation of Book I., which relates to the Church in Europe, the writer has by preference consulted works whose authors have been members of the Reformed Church. Among these may be mentioned: "Leben der Vater und Begrunder der Reformirten Kirche," 10 vols., Elberfeld, 1857; Max Goebel's "Geschichte des Christlichen Lebens in der rheinisch-west-phalischen evangelischen Kirche," 4 vols., Coblenz, 1849; Heppe's "Protestantismus," 2 vols., Marburg, 1852; and Cuno's "Gedachtnissbuch deutscher Fursten und Furstinnen reformirten Bekenntnisses," Barmen, 1884. The author has also frequently referred to the writings of Herzog, Ebrard, and Lange, as well as to the more usual German and English authorities on the history of the Reformation. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ The desire for a new history first found official expression in a resolution adopted by the General Conference of 1889, authorizing the publisher and trustees of the Publishing House to secure its preparation. No one being found who was willing to take up what seemed a rather formidable responsibility, the quadrennium passed without a beginning being made, and the General Conference of 1893 renewed the action of 1889. Under this authority, in May, 1894, the present writer was appointed to undertake the work. The task was accepted with a full sense of the responsibility involved, but with the hope that in due time it might be accomplished. He began early to make preparation for the work, collecting materials through extensive correspondence and from all other available sources. Other duties claiming a portion of his time, such as the care of a large congregation for nearly a year, and afterward of the Sunday-school literature of the Church, the writing itself proceeded with deliberation, a fact which the author trusts has resulted in advantage to the work. Book A History of the Congregational Churches

Download or read book A History of the Congregational Churches written by Williston Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Congregational Churches: In the United States The great teachers of the medieval church had uniformly held that the Bible is the ultimate source of religious au thority. But it was not the Bible interpreted by the in dividual. No thought fundamental to the Roman Empire had been more impressed on the minds of men than that of visible, external unity-a unity finding expression in a uniform system of government, a uniform body of law, and a visible, earthly head. This great Roman imperial con ception had produced the medieval papacy; it produced also in the political world the far less efficient, but no less assertive, Holy Roman Empire. For such a body, char acterized by such external marks of unity, an authorita tive exposition of that which it claimed as its fundamental law, the Bible, was imperatively necessary. That expo sitiou was believed to be set forth by the church itself, speaking through tradition, the consensus of its fathers and doctors, the decrees of its popes, and especially through general councils. All these made a mass of authority which, though professedly subordinate to the Word of God and merely interpretative of it, really, if not theoret ically, put it in the background; and substituted for a direct appeal to its prescriptions, a mass of exposition, the slow growth of centuries, which buttressed an elaborate sys tem of doctrine, polity, and ceremonial. Itself the result of gradual accretion through nearly a millennium and a half of years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One is a kingdom, another an empire, and still another a republic. Also by race. Great Britain is an Anglo-Saxon nation, France a Gallic, Germany a Teutonic, Russia a Slav. And still again by religion. One is a Mohammedan nation, others are heathen, and still others are Christian nations. This republic is classified among the Christian nations of the world. It was so formally declared by the Supreme Court of the United States. In the case of Holy Trinity Church vs. United States, 143 U. S. 471, that court, after mentioning various circumstances, added, "these and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation."
