Book Pietism and Community in Europe and North America 1650 1850

Download or read book Pietism and Community in Europe and North America 1650 1850 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pietist movements challenged traditional forms of religious community, group formation, and ecclesiology. Where many older accounts have emphasized the individual and subjective nature of Pietists to the exclusion of community, one of the hallmarks of Pietism has been the creation of groups and experimentation with new forms of religious association and sociality. The essays presented here reflect the diverse ways in which Pietists struggled with the tension between the separation from the “world” and the formation of new communities from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century in Europe and North America. Presenting a range of methodological perspectives, the authors explore the processes of community formation, the function of communicative networks, and the diversity of Pietist communities within the context of early modern religious and cultural history. Book German Moravian Missionaries in the British Colony of Victoria Australia 1848 1908

Download or read book German Moravian Missionaries in the British Colony of Victoria Australia 1848 1908 written by Felicity Jensz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the six decades that German Moravian missionaries worked in the British colony of Victoria, Australia, this book enriches understanding of colonial politics and the role of the non-British other in manipulating practice and policy in foreign realms. Central to the transnational nature of the book are questions of identity and of how individuals, and the organisations they worked for, can be seen as both colluders and opposers within nation-state borders and politics. It analyses the ways in which the Moravian missionaries navigated competing agendas within the colonial setting, especially those that impacted on their sense of personal vocation, their practices of conversion, and their understandings of the indigenous non-Christian peoples in the settler society of Victoria.

Book The Problem of Emancipation

Download or read book The Problem of Emancipation written by Edward Bartlett Rugemer and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Problem of Emancipation explores a long-neglected aspect of American slavery and the history of the Atlantic World, bridging a gap in our understanding of the American Civil War. It places the origins of the war in a transatlantic context, exploring the impact of Britain's abolition of slavery on the coming of the war, and revealing the strong influence of Britain's old Atlantic empire on the politics of the United States. This ground-breaking study examines how southern and northern American newspapers covered three slave rebellions that preceded British abolition and how American public opinion shifted radically as a result.

Book Literary Histories of the Early Anglophone Caribbean

Download or read book Literary Histories of the Early Anglophone Caribbean written by Nicole N. Aljoe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean has traditionally been understood as a region that did not develop a significant ‘native’ literary culture until the postcolonial period. Indeed, most literary histories of the Caribbean begin with the texts associated with the independence movements of the early twentieth century. However, as recent research has shown, although the printing press did not arrive in the Caribbean until 1718, the roots of Caribbean literary history predate its arrival. This collection contributes to this research by filling a significant gap in literary and historical knowledge with the first collection of essays specifically focused on the literatures of the early Caribbean before 1850.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing in the Northeast and the Midwest pushed the United States to the forefront of industrialized nations during the early nineteenth century; the South, however, lacked the large cities and broad consumer demand that catalyzed changes in other parts of the country. Nonetheless, in contrast to older stereotypes, southerners did not shun industrial development when profits were possible. Even in the Appalachian South, where the rugged terrain presented particular challenges, southern entrepreneurs formed companies as early as 1760 to take advantage of the region's natural resources. In Mountains on the Market: Industry, the Environment, and the South, Randal L. Hall charts the economic progress of the New River Valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia, which became home to a wide variety of industries. By the start of the Civil War, railroads had made their way into the area, and the mining and processing of lead, copper, and iron had long been underway. Covering 250 years of industrialization, environmental exploitation, and the effects of globalization, Mountains on the Market situates the New River Valley squarely in the mainstream of American capitalism.
