Book The Security Council and the Protection of Human Rights

Download or read book The Security Council and the Protection of Human Rights written by Bertie G. Ramcharan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2002-07-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human rights idea is shaping the contemporary world. At long last, human rights are being given the prominence they deserve by the organs of the international community dealing with questions of peace and security as well as with development. How is the Security Council dealing with human rights imperatives? What does it see as the place of human rights in conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping and peacebuilding? How does it address the quest for justice in the face of gross violations of human rights? These and other similar questions are addressed in this book, the first of its kind on the human rights role of the Security Council in the post cold-war world. It is a compelling account of the human rights dimensions of the work of the Security Council.

Book The United Nations Security Council in the Age of Human Rights

Download or read book The United Nations Security Council in the Age of Human Rights written by Jared Genser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive look at the human rights dimensions of the work of the only body within the United Nations system capable of compelling action by its member states. Known popularly for its failure to prevent mass atrocities in Rwanda, the former Yugoslavia, and Syria, the breadth and depth of the Security Council's work on human rights in recent decades is much broader. This book examines questions including: how is the Security Council dealing with human rights concerns? What does it see as the place of human rights in conflict prevention, peacemaking and peacekeeping? And how does it address the quest for justice in the face of gross violations of human rights? Written by leading practitioners, scholars and experts, this book provides a broad perspective that describes, explains and evaluates the contribution of the Security Council to the promotion of human rights and how it might more effectively achieve its goals.

Book The Ultimate Weapon is No Weapon

Download or read book The Ultimate Weapon is No Weapon written by Shannon D. Beebe and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century has seen millions unemployed. It has seen livelihoods undermined by environmental degradation. Middle-class cities in Europe, Asia, and Africa have become cauldrons of violence and resentment. Tribalism, ethnic nationalism, and religious fundamentalism have flared dangerously, from Russia to Spain. The use of force is unlikely to help. What works when counter-insurgency has run its course: in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and beyond? In this book, two authors brought together from distant points on the political spectrum by their concerns about the repercussions of violent political conflict on human lives, explain and explore a new idea for stabilizing the dangerous neighborhoods of the world. They challenge head-on Condoleezza Rice's declaration that "it is not the job of the 82nd Airborne Division to escort kids to kindergarten" contending that, in fact, it should be. When marginalized populations are trapped in poverty and lawlessness and denied political power and justice brutality, and fascism thrive. Human security is a new concept for clarifying what peace requires and the policies and priorities by which to achieve it.

Book Post War Security Transitions

Download or read book Post War Security Transitions written by Veronique Dudouet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the conditions under which non-state armed groups (NSAGs) participate in post-war security and political governance. The text offers a comprehensive approach to post-war security transition processes based on five years of participatory research with local experts and representatives of former non-state armed groups. It analyses the successes and limits of peace negotiations, demobilisation, arms management, political or security sector integration, socio-economic reintegration and state reform from the direct point of view of conflict stakeholders who have been central participants in ongoing and past peacebuilding processes. Challenging common perceptions of ex-combatants as "spoilers" or "passive recipients of aid", the various contributors examine the post-war transitions of these individuals from state challengers to peacebuilding agents. The book concludes on a cross-country comparative analysis of the main research findings and the ways in which they may facilitate a participatory, inclusive and gender-sensitive peacebuilding strategy. Post-War Security Transitions will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding, security governance, war and conflict studies, political violence and IR in general.

Book The UN Security Council and Human Rights

Download or read book The UN Security Council and Human Rights written by Sydney Bailey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN Charter establishes six 'principal organs'. Five of these are expressly authorized or permitted to deal with human rights. The single exception is the Security Council, but the Council has increasingly concerned itself with human rights inside sovereign states. This book recounts how this trend has developed in the Security Council, reluctantly at first but since 1989 with some enthusiasm and responsibility. Some Third-World countries are uneasy at this development, fearing that the Security Council, dominated by a single superpower, will interfere in the internal affairs of states without the agreement of the government concerned.

Book Can Security Sector Reform Contribute to the Reduction of Gender Based Violence

Download or read book Can Security Sector Reform Contribute to the Reduction of Gender Based Violence written by Susanne Nill and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-05-17 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1,7, University of Duisburg-Essen, course: Politikwissenschaften - Internationale Beziehungen und Entwicklungspolitik, language: English, abstract: The ambition of this thesis is to investigate the significance of gender issues for reforming the security sector. Further on it will be analyzed which gender-strategies are crucial for police reform and to which extent gender-sensitive police reform (GSPR) can contribute to a reduction of violence against women. The case study shall examine to which extent gender issues were integrated in GSPR in Sierra Leone. Based on these findings, this analysis will develop recommendations how gender can be integrated successfully into security sector reform. The theoretical part of this paper illustrates the concept of security sector reform and its meaning for peace-building and development. In addition, relevant dimensions and actors are introduced combined with the exemplification of influencing factors and potential obstacles. Afterwards the concept of gender is discussed, including its relevance for development cooperation as well as a description of gender-based violence and its consequences. The theoretical part concludes by merging these two concepts and illustrates the relevance and strategies of gender-sensitive police reform. The second part of this analysis focuses on gender and police reform in Sierra Leone. This chapter begins with a brief description of the civil war in Sierra Leone as well as the prevalence of gender-based violence. Afterwards the chapter analyses to which extent gender-sensitive strategies were integrated in police reform. The paper concludes with recommendations for further gender-sensitive strategies in the security sector and argues if effective police reform can reduce the emergence of gender-based violence.
