Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Church and the American Union The Author of this work, though a native of England, removed to America in the year 1828, while yet in early life. Having received Holy Orders at the hands of an American bishop in 1831, he gained his clerical experience in various parts of the United States and Canada. At the same time he had the pleasure of forming the acquaintance of many persons eminent in Church and State, and of a large proportion of the writers whose works are quoted in the following pages. Returning to this country in 1842, he obtained a Private Act of Parliament removing the legal disabilities attached to his American Ordination, and during the last nineteen years has enjoyed many opportunities of observing the operations of the Church at home. Book Union Or the Divided Church Made One Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union, or the Divided Church Made One And here it will be permitted by the reader, and will be su icient for the writer, to assume, that the oneness intended is, at least, a union of affection. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye love one another. Every instance of division, therefore, which ia capacitates Christians for reciprocating sincere expressions of Christian love with any part of the Church, is an unequivocal breach Of this great law Of unity. Let the subject Of differ ence be ever so trivial in itself, and the breach apparently ever so narrow, still, if it reach down to the heart, it is schism: or let it 'embrace ever so many particulars, and some Of them even of considerable importance, still if it leave the heart entire, and allow a visible interchange of Christian offices, the sin is absent. The law of Christ on the subject is-so definite, that we can lay our finger, so to speak, on the very point where the sin of schism begins; and, by comparing the exrstmg state of the Christian Church with the express requirements of that law, we can determine, with all the exactness of a chemical analysis, the places and the de grees in which it exists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church Union, Vol. 24: November, 1897 But, better yet, we would appeal to all college students, of true aims and gentle natures, to combine in a deter mined effort to make an end of this coarse and degrading system. We are well persuaded that it is the baser class of students who perpetuate the custom. Surely there ought to be enough of character and influence with the better class of men, backed as they would be by the faculty, to make the thing impossible in the future. The sentiment of Thomas Arnold, that it was not necessary that Rugby have two hundred or one hundred or fifty students, but it was necessary that it be a school of gen tlemen, might easily be made so prevalent as to sweep away such a low disgrace as hazing. We cannot but feel that the best men in college have either not realized the shame of the thing, or not realized their power to make an end of it. We have heard how much has been done by putting the students on their honor, and leaving much of the discipline of the college in the hands of the students themselves. This seems the very triumph of discipline. It would appear as if this same method could sweep hazing out of a college, amid the jeers and contempt of the solid mass of students. We would further suggest the carrying the war into Africa, by taking very special pains to receive and care for the new men, by laying out plans to make their eu trance as agreeable as possible, and by making the new friends graciously fill up the void caused by the home and friends left behind. This is the way of the true humanity much better, it is the way of the good God Himself. Toleration and shall the world be converted before Missions. The end of the century? Shall the world be converted in ten years? Shall it be converted in a hundred years A vast deal of the answer to this question is going to be given by the progress of church union. A house divided against itself cannot stand at home, much less grow stronger abroad. An intelligent Hindoo or Japanese, invited to Christianity, might well ask, Which? Which Christianity of them all is it, that I should turn unto? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Union Street Congregational Church Honest differences of Opinion respecting church organiza tion obtain, and will doubtless continue, till the end of time. Congregationalists believe it to be the privilege and duty of every person to search the Scriptures, and look to the Holy Spirit for light and truth. The right they claim for themselves they cheerfully accord, they acknowledge other Christian Churches, recognize the validity of their ministers, and welcome their members to the table of the Lord. They rejoice that the good and great of the earth are not confined to any one denomination of Christians, and they believe that the Divine Master recognizes the unity of His Church throughout the earth. John XVII. 20, 21. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent Me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essay on the Union of Church: And State If by any of my expressions I have nu necessarily wounded the feelings of any Christian brother, I ask him to forgive me. If I have unconsciously fallen into any exag geration, I deeply deplore it. Throughout the work I have made a clear distinction between evangelical and unevangelical cler gymen; between those who preach the Gos pel and those who do not preach it. No spurious liberality, no fear of censure, should obliterate the distinction; yet many, doubt less, who are not ranked among the evan gelical party, who do not support their insti tutions, and who do not usually act with them, may be converted and faithful ministers of Christ. Book Between Constantinople and Rome

Download or read book Between Constantinople and Rome written by Kathleen Maxwell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the artistic and political context that led to the production of a truly exceptional Byzantine illustrated manuscript. Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, codex grec 54 is one of the most ambitious and complex manuscripts produced during the Byzantine era. This thirteenth-century Greek and Latin Gospel book features full-page evangelist portraits, an extensive narrative cycle, and unique polychromatic texts. However, it has never been the subject of a comprehensive study and the circumstances of its commission are unknown. In this book Kathleen Maxwell addresses the following questions: what circumstances led to the creation of Paris 54? Who commissioned it and for what purpose? How was a deluxe manuscript such as this produced? Why was it left unfinished? How does it relate to other Byzantine illustrated Gospel books? Paris 54's innovations are a testament to the extraordinary circumstances of its commission. Maxwell's multi-disciplinary approach includes codicological and paleographical evidence together with New Testament textual criticism, artistic and historical analysis. She concludes that Paris 54 was never intended to copy any other manuscript. Rather, it was designed to eclipse its contemporaries and to physically embody a new relationship between Constantinople and the Latin West, as envisioned by its patron. Analysis of Paris 54's texts and miniature cycle indicates that it was created at the behest of a Byzantine emperor as a gift to a pope, in conjunction with imperial efforts to unify the Latin and Orthodox churches. As such, Paris 54 is a unique witness to early Palaeologan attempts to achieve church union with Rome.
