Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From July to September 1916, some 23,000 Australians were killed or wounded in the Battle of Pozières. It was the first strategically important engagement by Australian soldiers on the Western Front and its casualties exceeded those of any other battle of the First World War, including Gallipoli. In this important book, Christopher Wray explores the influence of Pozières on Australian society and history, and how it is remembered today. In the opening chapters he revisits the battle and considers its aftermath, including shell shock and the psychological effects experienced by surviving soldiers. The concluding chapters examine the way in which the battle has been commemorated in literature and art, and the extent to which it has been overlooked in contemporary remembrance of the war. Generously illustrated with photographs, maps and paintings, Pozières: Echoes of a Distant Battle is essential reading for anyone interested in the First World War and Australia's post-war society.

Book English Grammar Made Easy

Download or read book English Grammar Made Easy written by Annies Antony and published by Shashwat Publication. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on grammar is designed to meet the requirements of all students, both from English and Vernacular medium backgrounds. It strictly complies with the new approach to the teaching of English Grammar. Every aspect of Grammar, starting from the Alphabet, has been dealt with, in a simple and easy way for the students to follow. Copious illustrative examples and practice exercises have been provided in the book to help students handle the topics with confidence. The grammatical structures, vocabulary and communication skills will ensure a good command or mastery over the English language. The exercises given after every topic, have been framed, keeping in mind, the problems faced by my own students. As a teacher in English, for a number of years at Don Bosco High School, Matunga, Mumbai and St. Xavier’s High School and Junior College, Virar- for the Secondary and Higher Secondary Sections, I have noticed that many students consider grammar- ‘a hard nut to crack’ – something that goes above their head. Hence, throughout this book, I have made an attempt to explain the various topics, in the simplest Sway possible by giving simple examples. Thus, all efforts have been made, to maintain the true nature of the book by keeping it, true to its title ‘English Grammar Made Easy’. The content of the book is useful not only for the students but also for the teachers and the general public- interested in acquiring- competence in English Language in an easy way. In fact, the students cannot read and study Grammar as they do with the other subjects. It has to be taught and understood and for that, the teachers have to be fully confident and sure of the Grammar topics they intend to explain. Or else, they would only be confusing the students, and as a result, the students do not take any interest in learning grammar and often, it is sidetracked. On the other hand, if the topics are clearly explained and understood, the students will definitely enjoy learning it and consider grammar, an inevitable part of learning the language. So, this book could serve as a hand-book or manual, for the teachers and the learners as well, enabling them to be familiar with the ‘rules of the language’. I would certainly be glad to hear from teachers or students or the others, using this book – in the form of comments or suggestions of any kind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Thomas Edison''s first cinematic experiments to contemporary Hollywood blockbusters, Queer Images chronicles the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer sexualities over one hundred years of American film. The most up-to-date and comprehensive book of its kind, it explores not only the ever-changing images of queer characters onscreen, but also the work of queer filmmakers and the cultural histories of queer audiences. Queer Images surveys a wide variety of films, individuals, and subcultures, including the work of discreetly homosexual filmmakers during Hollywood''s Golden Age; classical Hollywood''s (failed) attempt to purge "sex perversion" from films; the development of gay male camp in Hollywood cinema; queer exploitation films and gay physique films; the queerness of 1960s Underground Film practice; independent lesbian documentaries and experimental films; cinematic responses to the AIDS crisis; the rise and impact of New Queer Cinema; the growth of LGBT film festivals; and how contemporary Hollywood deals with queer issues. This entertaining and insightful book reveals how the meaning of sexual identity—as reflected on the silver screen—has changed a great deal over the decades, and it celebrates both the pioneers and contemporary practitioners of queer film in America. Queer Images is an essential volume for film buffs and anyone interested in sexuality and culture.
