Book excerpt: "Smith's sage advice will aid Christians in recognizing the simple joys of practicing their faith."--Publishers Weekly Western culture is in a tailspin, and Christian faith is entangled in it: we do kingdom things in empire ways. Western approaches to faith leave us feeling depressed, doubting, anxious, and burned out. We know something is wrong with the way we do faith and church in the West, but we're so steeped in it that we don't know where to begin to break old habits. Popular pastor and speaker Mandy Smith invites us to be unfettered from the deeply ingrained habits of Western culture so we can do kingdom things in kingdom ways again. She explores how we can be transformed by new postures and habits that help us see God already at work in and around us. The way forward isn't more ideas, programs, and problem-solving but in Jesus's surprising invitation to the kingdom through childlikeness. Ultimately, rediscovering childlike habits is a way for us to remember how to be human. Unfettered helps us reimagine how to follow God with our whole selves again and join with God's mission in the world. Foreword by Walter Brueggemann.

Book The Well Educated Mind A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had Updated and Expanded

Download or read book The Well Educated Mind A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had Updated and Expanded written by Susan Wise Bauer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enduring and engaging guide to educating yourself in the classical tradition. Have you lost the art of reading for pleasure? Are there books you know you should read but haven’t because they seem too daunting? In The Well-Educated Mind, Susan Wise Bauer provides a welcome and encouraging antidote to the distractions of our age, electronic and otherwise. Newly expanded and updated to include standout works from the twenty-first century as well as essential readings in science (from the earliest works of Hippocrates to the discovery of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs), The Well-Educated Mind offers brief, entertaining histories of six literary genres—fiction, autobiography, history, drama, poetry, and science—accompanied by detailed instructions on how to read each type. The annotated lists at the end of each chapter—ranging from Cervantes to Cormac McCarthy, Herodotus to Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, Aristotle to Stephen Hawking—preview recommended reading and encourage readers to make vital connections between ancient traditions and contemporary writing. The Well-Educated Mind reassures those readers who worry that they read too slowly or with below-average comprehension. If you can understand a daily newspaper, there’s no reason you can’t read and enjoy Shakespeare’s sonnets or Jane Eyre. But no one should attempt to read the “Great Books” without a guide and a plan. Bauer will show you how to allocate time to reading on a regular basis; how to master difficult arguments; how to make personal and literary judgments about what you read; how to appreciate the resonant links among texts within a genre—what does Anna Karenina owe to Madame Bovary?—and also between genres. In her best-selling work on home education, The Well-Trained Mind, the author provided a road map of classical education for parents wishing to home-school their children; that book is now the premier resource for home-schoolers. In The Well-Educated Mind, Bauer takes the same elements and techniques and adapts them to the use of adult readers who want both enjoyment and self-improvement from the time they spend reading. Followed carefully, her advice will restore and expand the pleasure of the written word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Souls of W. E. B. Du Bois is a collection of articles that treat Du Bois on the subject of religion by reintroducing his life and work to an audience that may be familiar with his work generally but may never have seen analyses of his study of religion. Because the project includes articles that examine both Du Bois's personal religious life along with his examination of religion, the editors seek to add not only to our knowledge of Du Bois's scholarly contributions but also hope to shed light on his personal life and religiosity. Also, in treating the biography and career of a thinker whose work covers much of the twentieth century, the editors intend this work to address larger issues related to religion in the United States over the course of the century.

Book The Soul of All Living Creatures

Download or read book The Soul of All Living Creatures written by Vint Virga, D.V.M. and published by Crown. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As profiled in the New York Times Magazine… Based on the author’s twenty-five years of experience as a veterinarian and veterinary behaviorist, The Soul of All Living Creatures delves into the inner lives of animals – from whales, wolves, and leopards to mice, dogs, and cats – and explores the relationships we forge with them. As an emergency room clinician four years out of veterinary school, Dr. Vint Virga had a life-changing experience: he witnessed the power of simple human contact and compassion to affect the recovery of a dog struggling to survive after being hit by a car. Observing firsthand the remarkably strong connection between humans and animals inspired him to explore the world from the viewpoint of animals and taught him to respect the kinship that connects us. With The Soul of All Living Creatures, Virga draws from his decades in veterinary practice to reveal how, by striving to perceive the world as animals do, we can enrich our own appreciation of life, enhance our character, nurture our relationships, improve our communication with others, reorder our values, and deepen our grasp of spirituality. Virga discerningly illuminates basic traits shared by both humans and animals and makes animal behavior meaningful, relevant, and easy to understand. Insightful and eloquent, The Soul of All Living Creatures offers an intimate journey into the lives of our fellow creatures and a thought-provoking promise of what we can learn from spending time with them.

  • Author : Kwame Anthony Appiah
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2023-10-03
  • ISBN : 069125477X
  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book The Ethics of Identity written by Kwame Anthony Appiah and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold vision of liberal humanism for navigating today’s complex world of growing identity politics and rising nationalism Collective identities such as race, nationality, religion, gender, and sexuality clamor for recognition and respect, sometimes at the expense of other things we value. To what extent do they constrain our freedom, and to what extent do they enable our individuality? Is diversity of value in itself? Has the rhetoric of human rights been overstretched? Kwame Anthony Appiah draws on thinkers through the ages and across the globe to explore such questions, developing an account of ethics that connects moral obligations with collective allegiances and that takes aim at clichés and received ideas about identity. This classic book takes seriously both the claims of individuality—the task of making a life—and the claims of identity, these large and often abstract social categories through which we define ourselves.

Book The Faustian Motif in the Tragedies by Christopher Marlowe

Download or read book The Faustian Motif in the Tragedies by Christopher Marlowe written by Milena Kaličanin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Faustian Motif in the Tragedies by Christopher Marlowe discusses the argument that the pact with demonic forces, and/or its consequences, is a motif explored not only in Doctor Faustus, but in Marlowe’s other plays as well (Tamburlaine the Great, Dido, Queen of Carthage, The Jew of Malta). The book sets out to explore the way Marlowe explained this process, from play to play, in psychological and cultural terms, and to demonstrate its relevance for modern man and his culture. The text is divided into the Introduction and four main parts, each focusing on a particular aforementioned play by Marlowe. The book does not follow the actual chronological order in which these plays are supposed to have been written, not because it is uncertain, but for the obvious reason suggested by the nature of the theme: the text begins with Dr. Faustus because it is the only way to introduce and discuss the possible symbolic meanings of the act of selling one’s soul to the Devil. It ends with The Jew of Malta because in the world of Marlowe’s Malta – closest perhaps to our own in its mindless pursuit of profit – the major protagonists no longer have any soul to lose or to renounce. The method used in the book is wide-ranging and eclectic: besides relying on some permanently valid ideas of Humanist criticism, the book also offers insights into the views of the New Critics, particularly their requirement of the close reading of the literary works chosen for examination. Their approach is combined here with that of the New Historicists, who provided a corrective to the New Critic’s formalism by insisting on the importance of taking into consideration the historical and cultural context the work belongs to. The book will appeal to both scholars and students interested in the field of the English Renaissance literature, and also to a wider reading audience keen on observing, detecting and understanding the cultural processes equally relevant for the history of the English Renaissance period and present–day Western society.
