Book excerpt: Elizabeth wins Darcy, and Jane wins Bingley - but do they 'live happily ever after'? Emma Tennant's bestselling sequels to Pride and Prejudice ingeniously pick up several threads from Jane Austen's timeless novel, in a lighthearted and affectionate look at the possible subsequent lives of all the main characters. Pemberley tells of Elizabeth's failure to produce a child; while An Unequal Marriage continues the story of the Bennets and their wider circle into the next generation. Sparkling, stylish and ironic, with imaginative insights into the emotions and mores of eighteenth-century English high society, these are elegant and diverting social comedies by a master of the genre.

Book excerpt: Week after week, they sit in church . . . alone. They are the spiritually mismatched, those who are committed to a spouse who does not share their faith. Feeling abandoned by their spouse and forgotten by their church, they live out their faith in survival mode, guarding the spiritual flame yet never feeling free to share it. But God wants them to thrive--not just survive. Winning Him Without Words presents ten Christ centered keys to thriving in a spiritual mismatch. Readers are encouraged to commit to Christian community, to release their spouse to God's capable hands, to find peace in their relationships with Christ and with their spouse, to continue their pursuit of a growing faith, and to love their spouse with fresh enthusiasm. God wants every marriage to exude peace and love, and Winning Him Without Words empowers readers to create that environment in their homes and thrive as God works. Winning Him Without Words was the recipient of the Nonfiction Book of 2011 Award from the San Diego Christian Writers Guild, one of the largest Christian writers group in the United States.

Download or read book Colloquies written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 1320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erasmus' Familiar Colloquies grew from a small collection of phrases, sentences, and snatches of dialogue written in Paris about 1497 to help his private pupils improve their command of Latin. Twenty years later the material was published by Johann Froben (Basel 1518). It was an immediate success and was reprinted thirty times in the next four years. For the edition of March 1522 Erasmus began to add fully developed dialogues, and a book designed to improve boys' use of Latin (and their deportment) soon became a work of literature for adults, although it retained traces of its original purposes. The final Froben edition (March, 1533) had about sixty parts, most of them dialogues. It was in the last form that the Colloquies were read and enjoyed for four centuries. For modern readers it is one of the best introductions to European society of the Renaissance and Reformation periods, with lively descriptions of daily life and provocative discussions of political, religious, social, and literary topics, presented with Erasmus's characteristic wit and verve. Each colloquy has its own introduction and full explanatory, historical, and biographical notes. Volumes 39 and 40 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series - Two-volume set.

Eleanor accepts, determined to treat the arranged marriage with cool dignity. Then she meets Nicholas Delaney. Not only does he stir her senses, but the trouble and pain beneath his smooth exterior reaches her heart. Nicholas is indeed troubled. While serving his country by seducing secrets out of a French spy, he is persuaded to marry Eleanor to protect his family's honor. Download or read book The Colloquies Volume 2 written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2019 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erasmus' services to a new way of learning took various forms. He wrote school-books, bringing out his view that boys were kept too long over grammar, and ought to begin reading some good author as soon as possible. His own "Colloquies" were meant partly as models of colloquial Latin; the book was long a standard one in education. These lively dialogues are prose idylls with an ethical purpose,—the dramatic expression of the writer's views on the life of the day. Thus the dialogue between the Learned Lady and the Abbot depicts monastic illiteracy; that between the Soldier and the Carthusian brings out the seamy side of the military calling. Lucian has influenced the form; but the dramatic skill which blends earnestness with humour is the author's own; there are touches here and there which might fairly be called Shakspearian. This is part two of two.
