Book excerpt: A pioneering scholarly examination of the rich and fascinating fields of science fiction and fantasy art, this book stimulates scholarly interest in these areas by offering both surveys of the entire history of these traditions and focused examinations of particular genres and artists. In contrast to existing studies of science fiction and fantasy art, this volume argues that the subject needs to be explored within different contexts, such as literary history, art history, and cultural history. In addition, it maintains that certain trends should be followed across the field, such as art displaying recurring iconic images and art related to particular subgenres. The volume places special emphasis on studies that connect science fiction and fantasy artists to the authors and works they have illustrated. The contributors include several internationally recognized and award-winning science fiction writers and scholars. In addition to its historical surveys, the book provides detailed examinations of space art, representative artists Richard M. Powers and Frank Frazetta, and the major illustrators of noted children's author Margaret Wise Brown and famed fantasy writer J.R.R. Tolkien.

Book In the Shadow of the Holocaust Other Essays

Download or read book In the Shadow of the Holocaust Other Essays written by Constantin V. Ponomareff and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main thrust of this collection of essays, excluding those on Russian literature, is to visualize the European Holocaust from a number of different vantage points - the historical and cultural, the political and individual, the psychological and social, and the critical and literary. This wider perspective, especially as it relates to the range and extent of human suffering, suggests that a redefinition of the twentieth-century Holocaust is now timely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People in London-not merely literary folk, but even those "higher social circles" to which a certain publisher, whose name-or race-it is hardly fair to mention, had so obsequiously climbed-often wondered whence had come the wealth that enabled him to maintain such an establishment, give such elaborate "parties," have so many automobiles, and generally make all that display which is so convincing to the modern mind. Of course they were not seriously concerned, because, so long as it is a party, and the chef is paid so much, and the wines are as old as they should be, not even the rarest blossom on the most ancient and distinguished genealogical tree cares whose party it is, or, indeed, with whom she dances. There is only one democracy, and that is controlled by gentlemen with names that hardly sound beautiful enough to mention in fairy tales-that democracy of money to which the fairest flower of our aristocracy now bows her coroneted head.

Book Mandeville

  • Author : William Godwin
  • Publisher : Broadview Press
  • Release : 2015-12-01
  • ISBN : 155481085X
  • Pages : 530 pages

Download or read book Mandeville written by William Godwin and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Godwin’s Mandeville was described as his best novel by Percy Shelley, who sent a copy to Lord Byron, and it was immediately recognized by its other admirers as a work of unique power. Written one year after the battle of Waterloo and set in an earlier revolutionary period between the execution of Charles I and the Restoration, Mandeville is a novel of psychological warfare. The narrative begins with Mandeville’s rescue from the traumatic aftermath of the Ulster Rebellion of 1641 and proceeds through his early education by a fanatical Presbyterian minister to his persecution at Winchester school, his constant (and not unjustified) paranoia, and his confinement in an asylum. Mandeville’s final, desperate attempt to prevent his sister’s marriage to his enemy ends with his disfiguration, which also defaces endings based on settlement or reconciliation. The novel’s events have many resonances with Godwin’s own period. The historical appendices offer contemporary reviews, including Shelley’s letter to Godwin praising Mandeville, material explaining the novel’s complex historical background, and contemporary writings on war, madness, and trauma.

Book excerpt: It is New Year's day, 1900, when the brilliant violinist Sebastian Cavendish is found dead. The last few days of his life are a mystery, but in the final hours of 1899 he wrote a cryptic suicide note mentioning a "cursed inheritance", took poison, and died in agony. Yet his friends and relations are utterly perplexed. The man they knew and grieve for was vivacious, exuberant and extroverted. His fellow musicians speak of his passion, his drive, and his love of living. The socialites he met, all of whom lavished him with praise, saw only a dazzling future ahead of him. So why, his friends and loved ones ask, would he change his plans at such short notice, disappear for days on end, and take his own life? Vanessa Weatherburn, an established detective and ex-tutor to one of Sebastian's friends, is engaged to investigate the dead man's final movements. It is a journey which will reveal to her the science of genetics, the history of Sebastian's equally brilliant grandfather and the long-kept secrets of the Cavendish family.
