Book The Adventure of Wrangel Island Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Adventure of Wrangel Island Classic Reprint written by Vilhjalmur Stefansson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventure of Wrangel Island Besides agreeing with my colleagues as just outlined, I had reasons of my own for not going. I had already served in arctic exploration longer than any well-known explorer I had spent ten arctic winters, as against nine for Peary, who had previously held the record for polar service, and as against seven polar winters (arctic or antarctic), the highest record, SO far as I know, for any living commander Of polar expeditions. In a way my length of arctic service was a reason for staying at home; and still not a good one, for he who loves his work, and the field of his work, should not retire till he has become useless. But there were good reasons. If I succeeded in get ting Government Or influential private backing, I wanted to be south to organize a comprehensive arctic expedition, or series of expeditions. But whether I succeeded or failed in that, I wanted to remain south to continue my campaign of education with regard to the arctic regions. I wanted espec ially to try to reform the arctic sections of the geography textbooks, and in general to influence school and university teaching. This seemed to me not only a duty to science but also particularly my duty toward my native land, Canada, whose future depends so much on what the arctic portions of her territory are worth, and on how soon their real nature can be understood and taken advantage of. If I were to write here all my reasons for not going North in 1921, this introduction would turn into a prospectus Of my hopes and plans for 'the rest of my life. That would not interest the reader. What I have said, when coupled with the narrative of the book, will surely make it clear enough why I stayed when my associates sailed away. Download or read book The Isle of Seven Moons written by Robert Gordon Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Isle of Seven Moons: A Romance of Uncharted Seas and Untrodden Shores The island was there, yet it has gone. The seas have been scoured to every point of the compass by the scientifically or morbidly curious, by those lustful of blood or gold, yet no keel has sailed between its Twin Horns under the Seven Moons since that memorable year. One would swear that the very seas which the island jeweled were uncharted. Real enough, however, they were to the voyagers in that mad venture, for, after all, there is nothing quite so astounding and bewildering, nothing so romantic or so heavily veiled in illusion, as stark, naked Truth. Reverse your camera, Time; flash back over the years; unreel your myriad little pictures on the silver screen; turn your long finger of light upon the protagonists - no, not that crazy New York crowd - not yet - but on those simpler folk who from childhood curled their fingers in the manes Of the wild seahorses, who knew what it meant to sail out into the white shroud Of the sea. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mabel Robinson's delightful coming-of-age story won a Newbery Honor in 1938 and garnered extraordinary praise from critics and readers alike. Born and raised on Bright Island off the Maine coast, Thankful Curtis is more like her sea captain grandfather than any of her older brothers are. Nothing suits her better than sailing and helping her father with the farm. But when her dreaded sisters-in-law suggest that Thankful get some proper schooling on the mainland, the wind is knocked from her sails. Thankful finds the uncharted waters of school difficult to navigate: there's a rocky reception from her rich roommate, Selina; the breezy behavior of the charming Robert; and stormy Mr. Fletcher, the handsome Latin teacher whose caustic tongue masks a tender heart. And while Thankful works hard to make the best of her new life, Bright Island continues to flash in her thoughts, like the sparkle of the sun on the water. The New York Times raved, "One would be hard put to it to find a better contemporary novel than this," and now this evocative tale can be welcomed by a new generation of readers.

Download or read book An Outcast of the Islands Classic Reprint written by Joseph Conrad and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outcast of the Islands An Outcast of the Islands belongs to those novels of mine that were never laid aside; and though it brought me the qualification of exotic writer, I don't think the charge was at all justified. For the life of me I don't see that there is the slightest exotic spirit in the conception or style Of that novel. It is certainly the most tropical Of my tales. The mere scenery got a great hold on me as I went on, perhaps because (i may just as well confess it) the story itself was never very near my heart. It engaged my imagination much more than my affection. As to my feelings for Willems. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
