Book The Last Supper and the Lord s Supper

Download or read book The Last Supper and the Lord s Supper written by I. Howard Marshall and published by Regent College Pub. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - . . . The Lord's Supper should be celebrated frequently in the church, and there is good reason for doing so on each Lord's Day. - The Lord's Supper today should be open to all who wish to feed on Christ and profess faith in him. - The New Testament envisages the use of one loaf and a common cup. It would be good to maintain this symbolism today. These are but three of several provocative conclusions reached by the distinguished theologian I. Howard Marshall in this easy-to-understand and comprehensive survey of the New Testament accounts of the Lord's supper. This book explores the nature of other sacred meals in the ancient world, principally Jewish; the relationship to one or other of the biblical accounts themselves; the nature of the meal celebrated by the early church; the significance of the Last Supper as demonstrated by Jesus; and then as demonstrated by the early church. Understanding the supper as a Passover meal, Marshall shows the meal's orientation towards the death, resurrection and second coming of Jesus and its centrality to the life of the church. In doing so, he draws out a number of principles important for the Christian community today. I. Howard Marshall is Professor of New Testament and the University of Aberdeen. He has written numerous books including Biblical Inspiration and I Believe in the Historical Jesus.

  • Pages : 26 pages

Download or read book Second Apology of Justin Martyr written by St. Justin Martyr and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Apology is supposed to have been written as a supplement to the First Apology of Justin Martyr, on account of certain proceedings which had in the mean time taken place in Rome before Lollius Urbicus as prefect of the city, which must have been between 150 and 157. The Apology is addressed to the Roman Senate. The Second Apology was meant to expose the real reasons behind the recent persecutions of Christians under Urbicus. It also tried to expose the utter irrationality of allegations and propaganda spread against the Christians. Justin recounts the story of a certain woman who on hearing the teachings of Jesus and having become a Christian refused to comply with the immoral practices of her husband. Because the disagreements were severe she desired to be divorced, but not being encouraged to do so, she continued in that relationship until one day when it became ethically unlivable, and she gave him a bill of divorce. The husband retaliated by bringing accusations against her before the Emperor. But when he couldn't do anything against her, he turned against the Christian leaders whom Urbicus the prefect began to severely persecute.

Book Body Broken for a Broken People A

Download or read book Body Broken for a Broken People A written by Francis J. Moloney and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 1995-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here we have a Catholic exegete, on the basis of a close analysis of the New Testament texts, challenging his church to a reexamination of its disciplinary tradition: if the meal practice of Jesus embodied a never-failing presence of the Lord to his ever-failing disciples, then should not the church think twice before excluding faltering members from communion? Moloney's stimulating study gives food for thought even to Protestants who may consider that their own communion discipline has relaxed to the point of disappearance. In any case, this book makes a significant contribution to reflection on the ways to hold together the divine generosity in forgiveness, the call of sinners to repentance, and the responsibility of the church as beneficiary, messenger, and steward of the gospel."--Geoffrey Wainwright, Robert Earl Cushman Professor of Christian Theology, Duke University

Book A Body Broken for a Broken People

Download or read book A Body Broken for a Broken People written by Francis J. Moloney and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Moloney examines the New Testament's discussion of divorce, remarriage, and access to the eucharistic table. The earliest Church's accommodation of Jesus' teaching is part of our inspired Sacred Scriptures. The contemporary Church needs to question whether the current tradition concerning the divorced and remarried has not distorted the original revealed Tradition. Paul tells us why: For God has called us to peace (1 Cor 7:15).
