Book Advancements in Blast Simulator Analysis Demonstrated on a Prototype Wall Structure

Download or read book Advancements in Blast Simulator Analysis Demonstrated on a Prototype Wall Structure written by Aaron Freidenberg and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been demonstrated that the UCSD Blast Simulator has the capability of generating repeatable heavy impact loading on large structures. The pulse shape and duration of the impact from the hydraulic rams is tailored by careful regulation of the hydraulic pressures (the punch) and additionally by the presence of a particular rubber material (the programmer) at the front of hydraulic rams. A systematic approach was undertaken in order to meet the challenges of incorporating these unique characteristics of the punch and the programmer into experimental data processing and high fidelity computer models of Blast Simulator tests. These new methods were then validated through a test series consisting of ten prototype wall tests and corresponding computer simulations. Additionally, important insight was gained with regard to the effectiveness of this particular prototype wall system as a hardening strategy, and in further demonstrating the capability of the Blast Simulator in generating blast-like loading on wall systems.

Book Design Against Blast

Download or read book Design Against Blast written by S. Syngellakis and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorist attacks and other destructive incidents caused by explosives have, in recent years, prompted considerable research and development into the protection of structures against blast loads. For this objective to be achieved, experiments have been performed and theoretical studies carried out to improve our assessments of the intensity as well as the space-time distribution of the resulting blast pressure on the one hand and the consequences of an explosion to the exposed environment on the other. This book aims to enhance awareness on and understanding of these topical issues through a collection of relevant, Transactions of the Wessex Institute of Technology articles written by experts in the field. The book starts with an overview of key physics-based algorithms for blast and fragment environment characterisation, structural response analyses and structural assessments with reference to a terrorist attack in an urban environment and the management of its inherent uncertainties.A subsequent group of articles is concerned with the accurate definition of blast pressure, which is an essential prerequisite to the reliable assessment of the consequences of an explosion. Other papers are concerned with alternative methods for the determination of blast pressure, based on experimental measurements or neural networks. A final group of articles reports investigations on predicting the response of specific structural entities and their contents. The book concludes with studies on the effectiveness of steel-reinforced polymer in improving the performance of reinforced concrete columns and the failure mechanisms of seamless steel pipes used in nuclear industry.

Book Concrete Structures Subjected to Impact and Blast Loadings and Their Combinations

Download or read book Concrete Structures Subjected to Impact and Blast Loadings and Their Combinations written by Chunwei Zhang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-05-08 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much research focuses on investigating the responses of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under sole impact or blast loads, the responses of RC structures under a combination of impact and blast loads currently represent a gap in our knowledge. The combined actions of impact and blast loadings may be applied to RC structures during accidental or intentional collision of vessels, vehicles, etc., carrying explosive materials. A comprehensive study on the vulnerability of various structural members is carried out using finite element (FE) simulations under combination of impact and blast loads with the variations of various loading- and structural-related parameters and key parameters. This book introduces various structural analysis approaches for concrete structures when subjected to extreme loads such as impact and blast loadings. The theory of the combinations of impact and blast loads is proposed that can provide primary insights to the specific readers to develop new ideas in impact and blast engineering, including combined actions of extreme loads arising from real-world intentional or accidental events. This book will be of value to students (undergraduate or postgraduate), engineers, and researchers in structural and civil engineering, and specifically, those who are studying and investigating the performances of concrete structures under extreme loads.

Book Blast Simulator Wall Tests

Download or read book Blast Simulator Wall Tests written by Michael G. Oesterle and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loads generated in explosions that result from terrorist attacks and industrial accidents create devastating hazards for buildings and their occupants. The objective of this dissertation is to develop design guidelines and methodologies for protective/hardening strategies used to mitigate blast hazards in reinforced concrete and concrete masonry walls. Commonly, guidelines and methodologies are developed from experimental data. Field testing with live explosive is a reliable experimental method for demonstrating the performance of blast resistant concepts, but it is expensive, time consuming, and often produces low quality data. Static testing is another experimental method that allows researchers to clearly observe behavior and failure modes of structural components; however this too is limited because it cannot account for the rate effects associated with blast loads. The UCSD Blast Simulator was developed to offers an alternative method for testing structures to loads generated in an explosion without the difficulties and limitations associated with field and static testing. For this dissertation, tests were conducted with the blast simulator to study reinforced concrete walls protected with frangible panels, concrete masonry walls strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite, and unreinforced masonry walls retrofitted with polyurea catcher systems. The objective of the dissertation was achieved through a succession of tasks that included; the development of a test protocol, validation and implementation of numerical models to predict loads delivered to specimens during blast simulator tests, development of method to correlate blast simulator loads to air blast loads, generation of high quality data on specimens with mitigation strategies for validation of numerical models to predict response of hardened/protected reinforced concrete and concrete masonry walls, and investigation of design variables with parametric studies. The investigation of concrete masonry walls demonstrated that the addition of carbon fiber reinforced polymers can increase the resistance to blast loads, but may result in a brittle failure mode. The study of reinforced concrete walls showed that frangible panels can improve the response by adding mass to the system. Finally, the research performed on unreinforced masonry walls with polyurea catcher emphasized the need for proper connection detailing.

Book Structures Under Shock and Impact XII

Download or read book Structures Under Shock and Impact XII written by G. Schleyer and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of interest to engineers from civil, military, nuclear, offshore, aeronautical, transportation and other backgrounds, this book contains the proceedings of a well-established conference on the subject that was first held in 1989. Topics covered include: Impact and Blast Loading Characteristics; Protection of Structures from Blast Loads; Energy Absorbing Issues; Structural Crashworthiness; Hazard Mitigation and Assessment; Behaviour of Steel Structures; Behaviour of Structural Concrete; Material Response to High Rate Loading; Seismic Engineering Applications; Interaction Between Computational and Experimental Results; Innovative Materials and Material Systems; Fluid Structure Interaction. The shock and impact behaviour of structures presents challenges to researchers not only because it has obvious time-dependent aspects, but also because it is difficult to specify the external dynamic loading characteristics and to obtain the full dynamic properties of materials. It is crucial that we find ways to share the contributions and understanding that are developing from various theoretical, numerical and experimental studies, as well as investigations into material properties under dynamic loading conditions. This book helps to meet that need.

Book Feasibility Study for a Large Blast Simulator volume i

Download or read book Feasibility Study for a Large Blast Simulator volume i written by A. H. Wiedermann and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this research program is to determine the most feasible means of obtaining a nuclear blast simulator which will reproduce the transient flow field associated with the 500 psig. overpressure range of large nuclear weapon detonations. The blast simulator is of the general purpose type and is characterized by a traveling shock wave followed by a flowing gas. The test section is of the order of 25 x 50 feet in section and contains, in addition to the gas flow region, a soil container or region in which air induced stress waves can be generated. Two concepts were considered the most feasible. One is the standard shock tube concept which consists of a long tube, closed at one end, in which explosives are distributed over a large region and detonated. The other is the space variable energy input shock tube concept which consists of a long tube, open at both ends, in which explosives are distributed in a non-uniform manner. The resulting detonation yields longitudinal pressure gradients which are similar to the wave forms of interest. Both of these concepts simulate the overpressure and dynamic pressure variation in the test section satisfactorily. Cost estimates for these two concepts were made for a variety of facility sizes and blast wave parameters. (Author).
