Book excerpt: Field Guide to Fort Ord is a 100-page economical full-color paperback keepsake with images of Fort Ord's past and present, including hand-painted maps, archival photographs from Fort Ord yearbooks and the only comprehensive documentation of the soldier murals of Fort Ord. It is not a comprehensive history of the base. It is a companion to the Planet Ord project - documenting historic Fort Ord after it was closed, and in some ways, abandoned. Fort Ord is significant historically. It was the primary training site for soldiers during the Vietnam War. It was the first military base to integrate across race and gender. Fort Ord was the first home of VOLAR (volunteer Army) and later, the evolution of the innovative Lightfighters. A portion of the land was designated a National Monument in 2012. The original base is roughly the size of San Francisco, and is a critical wilderness area in California. Over 1 million soldiers served at Fort Ord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final Project VOLAR report is prepared as a data reference or data catalog rather than as a guide for imminent decision-making. In the two previous Fort Ord Project VOLAR evaluations, we have attempted to use the gathered empirical data as the basis from which to draw conclusions and proffer guidance for future program development. Primarily, this final report purports to document and record rather than to draw definitive conclusions. Information contained herein may have its greatest usefulness only at some later data, when more information may make our information more interpretable. Major findings from data presented in each of the Annexes are now summarized in turn. When the same data are presented in both tabular and chart form, the inclosure reference is to the chart only.

Book Bonfire of the Humanities

Download or read book Bonfire of the Humanities written by Bruce S. Thornton and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With humor, lucidity, and unflinching rigor, the acclaimed authors of Who Killed Homer? and Plagues of the Mind unsparingly document the degeneration of a central, if beleaguered, discipline—classics—and reveal the root causes of its decline. Hanson, Heath, and Thornton point to academics themselves—their careerist ambitions, incessant self-promotion, and overspecialized scholarship, among other things—as the progenitors of the crisis, and call for a return to “academic populism,” an approach characterized by accessible, unspecialized writing, selfless commitment to students and teaching, and respect for the legacy of freedom and democracy that the ancients bequeathed to the West.

Book The Environmental Legacy of the UC Natural Reserve System

Download or read book The Environmental Legacy of the UC Natural Reserve System written by Peggy L. Fiedler and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UC Natural Reserve System, established in 1965 to support field research, teaching, and public service in natural environments, has become a prototype of conservation and land stewardship looked to by natural resource managers throughout the world. From its modest beginnings of seven sites, the UC NRS has grown to encompass more than 750,000 wildland acres. This book tells the story of how a few forward-thinking UC faculty, who’d had their research plots and teaching spots destroyed by development and habitat degradation, devised a way to save representative examples of many of California’s major ecosystems. Working together with conservation-minded donors and landowners, with state and federal agencies, and with land trusts and private conservation organizations, they founded what would become the world’s largest university-administered natural reserve system—a legacy of lasting significance and utility. This lavishly illustrated volume, which includes images by famed photographers Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell, describes the natural and human histories of the system’s many reserves. Located throughout California, these wildland habitats range from coastal tide pools to inland deserts, from lush wetlands to ancient forests, and from vernal pools to oak savannas. By supporting teaching, research, and public service within such protected landscapes, the UC NRS contributes to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth.
