Book excerpt: Since April 1997, a strategically deployable, airdroppable light armored, direct fire system to support our early entry forces no longer exists. The decision to inactivate the 3-73 Armor Battalion and terminate the Armored Gun System has resulted in a shortfall in the capabilities of our rapid deployment contingency forces. While Army leaders acknowledge the requirement for an assault gun to support our early entry forces, they believe that the current and future organic anti-armor assets (IRC, Javelin, Apache, EFOOM, and LOSAT) within the 82 Airborne Division and the XVIII Airborne Corps mitigate the risk. Reflecting concerns over the deficiency in the structure or our rapidly deployable contingency forces and the pace and direction of current and proposed solutions, this monograph attempts to answer the question: Can the Airborne Division conduct forcible entry contingency operations against a 21st Century threat? Additionally, the study examines the requirement to conduct forcible entry operations based on future threats; determines that light airdroppable armored systems are necessary for forcible entry operations; and lastly, evaluates the stop gap methods being used to offset the lost capabilities of the 3-73 Armor Battalion.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to study the argument over the best use of AMC's newest asset; the C-130 Hercules. History and doctrine appear to support the use of the C-130 in the airborne forcible entry mission. Ill defined requirements and diminishing capabilities of both the C-130 and the airborne division support the search for an alternative mission for the aircraft. History, doctrine, capability, and requirements for the C-130 to perform personnel airdrop are examined. The conclusion examines several alternatives that could logically result from this debate. These include: (1) the elimination of mass airborne personnel drops as a valid method of forcible entry; (2) maintaining this capability, but eliminating the role of the C-130 in this mission, and (3) maintenance of the status quo continued C-130 support for the airborne division.

Book excerpt: China's continuing rapid economic growth and expanding involvement in global affairs pose major implications for the power structure of the international system. To more accurately and fully assess the significance of China's emergence for the United States and the global community, it is necessary to gain a more complete understanding of Chinese security thought and behavior. This study addresses such questions as: What are China's most fundamental national security objectives? How has the Chinese state employed force and diplomacy in the pursuit of these objectives over the centuries? What security strategy does China pursue today and how will it evolve in the future? The study asserts that Chinese history, the behavior of earlier rising powers, and the basic structure and logic of international power relations all suggest that, although a strong China will likely become more assertive globally, this possibility is unlikely to emerge before 2015-2020 at the earliest. To handle this situation, the study argues that the United States should adopt a policy of realistic engagement with China that combines efforts to pursue cooperation whenever possible; to prevent, if necessary, the acquisition by China of capabilities that would threaten America's core national security interests; and to remain prepared to cope with the consequences of a more assertive China.
