Book excerpt: `A study of both Tudor Anglo-Irish relations and the 16th century, Morgan's work is first rate, thoughtful, well-researched and subtle.' ARCHIVES As a study of both Tudor Anglo-Irish relations and the sixteenth-century, Morgan's work is first rate, thoughtful, well-researched and subtle. ARCHIVES Fascinating piece of detective work... No serious student of late Tudor Ireland can afford to ignore this rigorous and painstaking analysis. HISTORY Between 1594-1603 Elizabeth I faced her most dangerous challenge - the insurrection in Ireland known to British historians as the rebellion of the earl of Tyrone, and to their Irish counterparts in the Nine Years War. This study examines the causes of the conflict in the developing policy of the Crown, which climaxed in the Monaghan settlement of 1591, and the continuing resilience of the Gaelic system which brought to power Hugh Roe O'Donnell and Hugh O'Neill. The role of Hugh O'Neill, the earl of Tyrone, was pivotal in the conspiracies leading up to the war and in the leadership ofthe Irish cause thereafter. O'Neill's acceptance of an alliance with Spain rather than a fragile compromise with England is the terminal point of the study. By exploiting all the available source material, Dr Morgan has not only provided a critical reassessment of the early career of Hugh O'Neill but also made an original and lasting contribution to both Irish and Tudor historiography. HIRAM MORGAN is lecturer in history, University College, Cork.

Book excerpt: Image is everything… Piper Isenhart named her production company Perfect Image because that’s what she sells to her high-end fashion clients: beauty. Her superficial hiring practices made her a success, but beautiful doesn’t equal loyal, either on the job or in her personal life. After the defection of yet another pretty face, a top client offers a wager: hire the next person to walk through the door, warts and all. Piper accepts, but hadn’t expected that person to be quite so…challenging. Looks aren’t everything… All Tyrone Bennett wants is a chance to be the best he can be. Smart but socially awkward, he’s never had more than a minimum wage job. But if he’s going to help his family and pay for college, he’ll need more than that. He’s looking for a job the old-fashioned way, pounding the pavement, when he walks smack into Piper’s wager at Perfect Image. But everything’s on the line… Piper always attracted men interested only in her money and connections. Deep inside, she’s ready for someone different. She hadn’t anticipated someone as different as Tyrone. But under his geeky glasses and ill-fitting clothes, Piper discovers not only a smoking hot body, but a mind and heart that will challenge her. But only if she’s willing to change her idea of what exactly “perfect” means.

Book excerpt: The Wizard of Osborne takes place in a Basic Combat Training camp in Fort Knox during the harsh fall and winter of 1977, when Kentucky remained under a few feet of snow between November and March. Osborne lives in his own slow and distant world. His hanging lower lip makes him appear idiotic. Other soldiers ridicule him. They think of him as "touched by the spirits," or just dumb and lazy, while the rest of the men are convinced that Osborne is bucking for an early discharge. Although he takes pride in the American sense of fair play, he becomes dismayed at the ongoing bigotry and exclusion in the ranks. Osborne has a unique talent of making statuettes, busts, and reliefs with ice and snow of everything he sees. He makes ice-figures of his drill sergeants, his friends, birds on a chain link fence, and even a poodle to cheer up a fellow soldier. In the end, Osborne becomes the boot camp hero simply by building a grand scale monument with ice and snow, and saves the day.

Book The Autobiography of Tyrone Pridgen

Download or read book The Autobiography of Tyrone Pridgen written by Pridgen Tyrone Pridgen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is my autobiography. I'm qualified to write the book because it is the story of my life. There is philosophy in the book. The book will help the public to be able to communicate with each other, more easily because the book gives society a person whose name is Tyrone Pridgen. I wrote the story of my life because I felt that it was necessary. I felt that it would be good to share some of my experiences with society. Needing independence is another reason for my autobiography. I'm seriously depressed, which is my disability. There are some people who don't know what they want in reality, to a good degree, and they bother other people in various ways, among which are staring, and blocking their path. One reason is for the communication skills that I thought of and the needling forces communication. This has been keeping me depress. My area of study has been business and math, but after I thought of the good communication system I began to write. I intend on writing poems once this book is published. The reason is because then people will not only have information that they need to have about me, but will know who they are purchasing the poems from.

Book The Pursuit of Perfection

Download or read book The Pursuit of Perfection written by Dónal McAnallen and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, Cormac McAnallen was voted Young Footballer of the Year. In 2003, he helped Tyrone to its first-ever All-Ireland championship win, and was named an All-Star. He was, by any measure, one of the best and most promising young footballers in Ireland. But in March 2004, Cormac McAnallen died suddenly of an undetected heart condition. He was, truly, a young star cut down just as he entered his prime. As he worked his way up through the ranks of club, school and inter-county football, Cormac almost always had his brother Dónal - just a year older - by his side. Nobody else in the world knew as well as Dónal did how badly Cormac wanted to succeed, how hard he worked, or how much thought he put into his game. In The Pursuit of Perfection, Dónal McAnallen draws upon Cormac's diaries and frank self-assessments, and his own memories of their experiences, to create a remarkable portrait of a young sportsman's mindset and methods. It is both one of the most remarkable GAA books ever written and - in its intimacy and depth - a book that transcends Gaelic games. 'Exceptional ... Unique and compelling, raw and moving ... Much better than any myth or legend' Paul Rouse, Irish Examiner 'A touching, sometimes bracing biography ... It feels like a final word, the family's last say on how he lived and how he died and how he ought to be remembered.' Malachy Clerkin, Irish Times 'Beautifully told' Dermot Crowe, Sunday Independent 'Stirs something deep around the concept of brotherhood' Belfast Telegraph 'Heart-rending ... It is a painstakingly researched work - aided by the fact that both brothers kept meticulous diaries - and what's striking about the story is the pressure that Cormac was under despite or maybe because of his success with Tyrone' Sunday World
