Download or read book The Two Lost Centuries of Britain Classic Reprint written by Wm H. Babcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Lost Centuries of Britain This little book is the outgrowth of an earnest eu deavor to see clearly in my own mind, and for my own purposes, a part of the life of sixth century Britain. Almost at the beginning, I found that this implied much more, every decade hanging to the next like the links of a chain. Authority suggested authority; one problem tempted the inquirer to another. My mass of notes grew bulky, even portentous. The natural out let was by a careful consecutive statement, necessarily for the most part in narrative form and covering all that was really germane to the purpose in hand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a time in the life of every nation when its history is clouded in a fog of uncertainty, when tradition and fact are closely allied and almost indistinguishable. It is usually that period which precedes the transitional time when the records are written in sand and punctuated in stone, and names and deeds must form the nucleus of historical sequence. In "The Two Lost Centuries of Britain," Mr. Babcock has invaded the realm of just such a period, a realm filled with all the glamour and attraction of poetical tradition. As he says, "This proved an arduous undertaking, but not without a charm." Mr. Babcock has given this charm to his work, and, although on its face research and care in sifting the materials at his command are evident, yet the effect of a well-directed imagination is everywhere shown. It is more of a literary picture than a chronological investigation. He begs not to be regarded as being contradictory from "incurable perversity," and says, "One would wish to stand well with the most reliable audience." He confesses that he owes much to "fancy and real tradition." The book is written in such a charming and literary style that the pleasure one derives from reading something unique is much enhanced.--The Nassau Literary Magazine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of Great Britain Green, like every one else who tries to compress the story of England into' one volume, had to take a selective view; for instance, he emphasized, in some centuries, literary history, in others, social. There are many gaps in his narrative, due to the imperative need of compres sion and to these gaps we owe his singularly full treat ment of other parts of our history. The Short History was not a complete statement it was not meant to be such but it is the account of what struck a man who possessed both knowledge and genius, as being the most important aspects of English History. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England During the Early and Middle Ages, Vol. 2 The student will perceive at a glance, that I have confined myself exclusively to the political side of history. In the chapter on the English Church, for in stance, I have not attempted to sketch the variations of religious thought, or even to appropriate the labours, by which I have tried to profit, of Professor Brewer and Professor Stubbs, on the inner life of the great religious orders. It is necessary to my plan that I should treat such matters only in their results on secular society and those who have leisure and inclination for fuller re searches can easily refer to the sources I have indicated. It is difficult to be quite consistent in these matters, but, at the hazard of occasional meagreness, I have thought it better to confine myself to a single subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Groundwork of British History, Vol. 2: From the Union of the Crowns to the Present Day It is to meet such difficulties that our book is directed. Our aim is to provide the reader with a groundwork at once solid and broad - based, upon which increasing know ledge may gradually be buiIn order to do this the book strives to encourage the faculties of understanding and reason rather than mere memory; and to make boys think why things happened and 'what the consequences were. For example, in the seventeenth century, the chief place is given to the struggle between King and Parliament, whilst in the eighteenth century the series of great wars, the story of domestic politics, the Industrial Revolution and its effects, are made the subject of separate chapters. And, in the later portions of the history, particular attention, has been paid to the growth and development of the British Empire, and to the various social and economic changes that occurred in Great Britain during the nineteenth century. Download or read book Poetry of Empire written by John John and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry of Empire: Nineteen Centuries of British History "And the cry of the two hosts went up through the higher air to the splendour of Zeus." So wrote Homer of the glorious warfare by the Scamander; and it is often the curse of war more than the blessing of peace that lifts the commonplace to the atmosphere of the sublime. Warfare between Roman and Briton, between Celt and Saxon, Englishman and Scot, Irishman and Englishman, bitter civil warfare, - all these have helped to make our nation what it is. The story of a nation is always a story of bloodshed; many a time and oft of blood that has been wrongfully and wastefully shed. In times of peace national growth continues - as grows a coral reef - quietly, persistently; but it is the God of Battles who moulds peoples, and they are not days of prosperous commercialism, but days of storm and stress, that bring out what is best in the children of men. The Poetry of the British Empire has many a gallant tale to tell of fights by land and by sea, for without much fighting, fighting not only with men, but with the elements, with the very forces of Nature, there can be no Empire making. In this Anthology the compilers have endeavoured to give as far as possible in verse form a Chronological History of the British Nation. There are those who find fault with the idea of an Imperial Anthology including poems descriptive of incidents which took place before the peoples of Great Britain were welded into one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herring: Its Effect on the History of Britain No one who studies national economics of past centuries can fail to be impressed by evi deuces of the close connection between the foreign policy of England and her national trade interest, though during the nineteenth century that connection was growing looser, and, in the two or three decades just before this war, had begun to disappear. Wool and herring in the period covered by the twelfth to the seventeenth centuries were what would now be called key industries. It was on them our national policy may be said to have largely turned whenever the rulers of England entered upon discussions, peaceful or warlike, with other nations. Further, our political action, whether in respect of domestic or foreign policy, was silently but ultimately based upon that national system of economics which was for the most part represented by the words wool and herring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the People of England in the Nineteenth Century, 1832-1898, Vol. 2 It is not necessary here to go into the question whether or not the death penalty ought or ought not to be abolished altogether. It is so abolished in some countries of Europe and in some States Of the American Republic; and the argument is still going on as to the effect Of abolition on the increase or the decrease Of crime. It is perfectly certain that while the death penalty was enacted for all manner Of minor Offences the Offences did not decrease in number. How far the teaching of this evidence may be practically pushed, and whether the death penalty has in any cases the eect of diminishing the general average Of crime, is a question which to this day occupies the serious attention Of philan thropists and law reformers everywhere. Book Western Europe in the Fifth Century

Download or read book Western Europe in the Fifth Century written by Edward Augustus Freeman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Western Europe in the Fifth Century: An Aftermath When the late Mr. E. A. Freeman set forth on his last visit to Spain his immediate interest was the completion of his History of Sicily. It was known, however, by his friends that he had left behind in an unfinished state the materials for a volume on Western Europe in the Fifth Century. Like many other historical students he was much interested in the few historical notices that have survived concerning the events in Britain during the fifth century. He desired to understand them, and as far as possible to fit them in with what we know of the general political development of Western Europe, and he felt that the only way of approaching this subject with any chance of permanent success was to make sure of the events that had happened in Gaul. If we understood clearly what had occurred there we were at least in possession of information which would keep us from Wrong ideas as to what might have happened in insular Britain. The incidents that are recorded are so brief and isolated that, taken by themselves, they fail to give us any idea of what was going on, but when we look at them in the light created by events in Gaul we perceive faint traces of a connexion between them; it is the fading influence of the magic name, res publica Romana, and the efforts that were being made, secular and religious, to revive it for the salvation of the island. It was then for this purpose that he had given as professor two or three courses of lectures on this subject, and it is evident from such. The centuries of administrative organization which stretch from Ecgberht to Edward the First, the age of full national development which extends from Edward's day to our own, only become intelligible to us when we have fully grasped this age of national formation. I cannot but feel, therefore, that it is no slight misfortune that such a period should remain comparatively unknown, and that its struggles, which were in reality the birth-throes of our national life, should be still to most English men, as they were to Milton, mere battles of kites and of crows.
