This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two-Hundredth Anniversary of the Organization of the United Congregational Church, Little Compton, Rhode Island, September 7, 1904 There were present many other distinguished visitors as well as a large number of summer residents. The towns people were numerously represented in the audience, taking a deep interest in honoring the church that to their fathers had been the gate to heaven throughout many generations. The exercises began at A. M., Mrs. Henry A. Groth presiding at the organ, and the order of exercises as found on a subsequent page was carried out. During the intermissions for refreshments many availed themselves of the opportunity to visit the Grange Hall, where was exhibited a remarkable collection of antique furniture and many articles of historic interest from families in the town. Of the addresses which followed only the historical dis course and the historical address are printed in full. Of some of the others, delivered without manuscript, it has been impossible to reproduce more than an abstract. Mr. Burchard's address contains some material that he had prepared but which for lack of time was omitted in the delivery. This material is inserted at the request of the committee. The sermon by Dr. Plumb was replete with anecdote and illustration, but being delivered without notes, it has been impossible to reproduce more than an abstract. In general it may be stated that many items of interest have been omitted from other addresses for the reason that they already appear in the published report of the proceedings of the 175th anniversary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings at the Two Hundredth Anniversary: Of the Second Church of Christ in Hartford, February 22d and 23d, 1870 The church is a perfect bower of beauty. Along the sides of the galleries run festoons of laurel and pine, looped up at regular distances over medallions containing the names of the former pastors of the church, and the date of their pastorate. The names are in brilliantly illuminated letters, and each is enclosed with a wreath of laurel. In front of the organ-loft the festoons are held by stars and crosses, and in the centre is a large lyre with strings of gold. The pillars are entwined with heavy wreaths, and large festoons hang from the center of the ceiling to the four corners. From the center hangs a heavy wreath ending in a large anchor and cross combined, emblematical of Faith and Hope. The gas brackets are festooned with laurel, and wreaths and crosses are over all the doors, and run over the cornices of the windows. The crowning glory is around the altar and pulpit. Here the large center window is filled in with a white panel, on which is written in large German text the original covenant, and the names of the original members of the church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Discourse: Delivered at the Hundredth Anniversary of the Organization Second Congregational Church, Norwich, Conn;, July 24, 1860 Some of you may like to be introduced to Mr. Whitaker, whose agency was so prominent in the primary movements of this church. I will present him to your acquaintance, pre suming that he is a stranger, of whom most of you have little or no knowledge. He was born in Concord, Mass., and was graduated at Harvard College in the year 1730. His first set tlement was in New Jersey, where he acquired such a stand ing in his profession as to procure from Princeton College the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. He was a staunch Presbyterian of the old Scotch stamp, and made an earnest effort to plant that order here. But the two old Puritan N a thaniels, Backus and Shipman, declined coming into such ar rangement, and they carried their point, and Congregation alism was the vine here planted. Book Wilbur Orville Wright

Download or read book Wilbur Orville Wright written by Arthur George Renstrom and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the year 2003, hundreds of events will mark the one-hundredth anniversary of the Wright brothers' historic first flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The centennial year will witness exhibitions, lectures, television documentaries, films, air shows, flight recreations of Wright aircraft, the issuing of postage stamps and medals, the publication of dozens of new books and articles, and numerous other commemorative activities. One of these events, although not likely to make the evening news, is among the most important of all in terms of a lasting contribution to the observance of this ultimate aviation milestone: the reprinting of Arthur G. Renstrom's Wilbur & Orville Wright: A Chronology Commemorating the Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Orville Wright, August 19, 1871. Since its appearance in 1975, Wilbur & Orville Wright: A Chronology has become indispensable to students and authors concerned with the life and work of the famous brothers. No doubt every book on the subject published in the last quarter century, including three of my own, was written with this treasure close at hand. This volume is far more than a simple compilation of dates and facts. Renstrom was a master reference librarian and bibliographer with a passion for aviation and the Wright brothers. He brought his considerable research skills to bear on the topic, and the result is a richly detailed, ever-informative, often entertaining walk through the lives and achievements of these two extraordinary individuals. Renstrom was not content to offer a date with a one-line tidbit. His entries are brimming with information. This is a highly readable reference work that, believe or not, can be enjoyably read from cover to cover. The project was clearly a labor of love by a talented professional. During most of the last twenty years, I have been privileged to be the curator of the 1903 Wright Flyer at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. The position brings a steady stream of inquiries about the Wright airplane and the endlessly fascinating brothers who created it. I do not know how I would have done this job without Renstrom's superb volume on my bookshelf. It is the first place I go to check anything on the Wright brothers, and I typically find what I am looking for in its pages. Arthur Renstrom also published two other classic reference works on the Wright brothers: Wilbur & Orville Wright: A Bibliography Commemorating the Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Wilbur Wright, April 16, 1867, in 1968 (an updated revision was published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2002) and Wilbur & Orville Wright, Pictorial Materials: A Documentary Guide in 1982, completing a series of research tools for which there are few peers on any subject. He was also part of the team that produced the landmark two-volume compilation of the Wrights' letters, notebooks, and diaries in 1953, The Papers of Wilbur and Orville Wright, edited by Marvin W. McFarland. Renstrom's contribution to the documentation and preservation of the Wright story is a lasting legacy that will serve researchers, students, and general enthusiasts for generations to come. In this busy, high-profile anniversary year, the reprinting of a nearly thirty-year-old reference book may seem a mundane and quiet contribution to the celebration surrounding the Wright brothers' world-changing achievement, but it is perhaps one of the most important. The U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission and NASA are to be commended for their foresight.
