Book excerpt: With references to traditional Taoist and Chinese texts, as well as influences from the author's background in psychology and psychotherapy, this book by Lorie Dechar demonstrates how practitioners can work with the spirit of acupuncture points in modern practice. The concept of 'kigo', a Japanese word meaning 'season word', is used to understand the seasonal energy of the points and how the body relates to the universal flow. As an understanding of the spirit of the point brings focus and potency to a practitioner's needling, it also strengthens their ability to touch a patient's soul and spirit, besides the physical body. Tying in the macro cosmic connection of the body to the universe with a poetic force that amplifies and deepens the effect of acupuncture, Kigo is the perfect companion not only for acupuncturists, but also for chiropractors and psychotherapists, doctors and nurses, and other practitioners who use the points as part of their clinical work.

Book History and Mythology of the Aztecs

Download or read book History and Mythology of the Aztecs written by and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1998-06-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great documents of colonial Mexico, the Codex Chimalpopoca chronicles the rise of Aztec civilization and preserves the mythology on which it was based. Its two complementary texts, Annals of Cuauhtitlan and Legend of the Suns, record the pre-CortŽsian history of the Valley of Mexico together with firsthand versions of that region's myths. Of particular interest are the stories of the hero-god Quetzalcoatl, for which the Chimalpopoca is the premier source. John Bierhorst's work is the first major scholarship on the Codex Chimalpopoca in more than forty years. His is the first edition in English and the first in any language to include the complete text of the Legend of the Suns. The precise, readable translation not only contributes to the study of Aztec history and literature but also makes the codex an indispensable reference for Aztec cultural topics, including land tenure, statecraft, the role of women, the tribute system, warfare, and human sacrifice.

Book excerpt: A unique collection of 36 chapters on the history of Chinese medical illustrations, this volume will take the reader on a remarkable journey from the imaging of a classical medicine to instructional manuals for bone-setting, to advertising and comic books of the Yellow Emperor. In putting images, their power and their travels at the centre of the analysis, this volume reveals many new and exciting dimensions to the history of medicine and embodiment, and challenges eurocentric histories. At a broader philosophical level, it challenges historians of science to rethink the epistemologies and materialities of knowledge transmission. There are studies by senior scholars from Asia, Europe and the Americas as well as emerging scholars working at the cutting edge of their fields. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two brothers engaged in drug smuggling cross the U.S. Mexican border so often that they know precisely when and where U.S. Border Patrol agents are watching. In The Night Sun, Miguel and Cesar Ramirez-Barrios come under fire from rival drug cartels and the American Border Patrol, as well as their own cartel while crossing the border with a large amount of cocaine. Corruption, greed, and deceit entangle these powerful groups as they wrestle for control of this dangerous zone of Southern Arizona near Ambos Nogales, the official port of entry on the international border. When the mutilated bodies of two American border patrol agents are found there, Alejandra Mendoza Thomas is the local TV personality covering the gruesome murders. Miguel and Cesar's ill-fated journey moving their drugs promptly takes an unexpected detour that puts them at the epicenter of the cartels' campaign of carnage along the border. In desperation, Cesar prays to Jesus Malverde, the patron saint of narco traffickers, and also pays homage to The Night Sun, the Mayan legend of the jaguar. While Miguel doesn't believe in the Mexican black arts, he too begins to pray as their journey north explodes in violence.

Book The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle

Download or read book The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle written by Hugh Lofting and published by E-Kitap Projesi & Cheapest Books. This book was released on 2023-12-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle was the second of Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle books to be published, coming out in 1922. It is nearly five times as long as its predecessor and the writing style is pitched at a more mature audience. The scope of the novel is vast; it is divided into six parts and the illustrations are also more sophisticated. It won the Newbery Medal for 1923. It was one of the novels in the series that was adapted into the film Doctor Dolittle. The novel begins when Tommy Stubbins, the narrator of the story, finds a squirrel injured by a hawk. Matthew Mugg, the cat's meat man, informs him to get help from Doctor Dolittle, who can speak the language of animals. The Doctor is away on a voyage, but when he returns, he attends to the squirrel. Tommy is introduced to some of the strange animals in Dolittle's care, such as the Wiff-Waff fish, and those who care for his household, such as Dab-Dab the duck, and Jip the dog. Polynesia the parrot arrives in Puddleby from Africa informs the Doctor that Bumpo is studying in Bullford. Tommy begins his studies with Doolittle, or rather with Polynesia who teaches Tommy the language of animals. Chee-Chee comes from Africa disguised as a lady and tells about his voyage to Puddleby. The Doctor acquires The Curlew and is thinking of taking Tommy, Polynesia, and Luke the Hermit. They find out from the hermit's dog, Bob, that he was sent to prison for murder but Bob is a witness so when the court is in the process the Doctor proves to the judge that he can talk to animals when this is settled he translates Bob's story to English. When the story is finished the judges conclude that the hermit is innocent.

This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 3234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English-born American author Hugh Lofting was the creator of the beloved children's character of Doctor Dolittle, the eccentric, yet genial physician that can talk to the animals. The genesis of the series appeared in illustrated letters sent by Lofting to his children, while he was undergoing the horrors of the trenches in World War I, when news was “too horrible” to send. The Dolittle books are celebrated for their charming wit and the humorous treatment of the doctor’s bachelor household in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh. However, Lofting’s works provide a recurring message of pacifism and censure of warmongering, which is most evident in Lofting’s anti-war poem ‘Victory for the Slain’. For the first time in publishing history, this edition presents Lofting’s complete works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts and concise introductions. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Lofting’s life and works * Concise introductions to the novels and other texts * All of the Doctor Dolittle books, including ALL of Lofting’s original illustrations * Rare novels appearing for the first time in digital publishing * Images of how the books were first published, giving your eReader a taste of the original texts * Excellent formatting of the texts * Lofting’s other children’s books, digitised here for the first time, including ‘Porridge Poetry’ and ‘Noisy Nora’ * Lofting’s works for adults – available in no other collection * Includes the 1924 pacifist essay ‘Children and Internationalism’ * The anti-war poem ‘Victory for the Slain’ * Ordering of texts into chronological order and genres Please visit www.delphiclassics.com to browse through our range of exciting titles CONTENTS: The Doctor Dolittle Books The Story of Doctor Dolittle (1920) The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922) Doctor Dolittle’s Post Office (1923) Doctor Dolittle’s Circus (1924) Doctor Dolittle’s Zoo (1925) Doctor Dolittle’s Caravan (1926) Doctor Dolittle’s Garden (1927) Doctor Dolittle in the Moon (1928) Gub Gub’s Book (1932) Doctor Dolittle’s Return (1933) Doctor Dolittle and the Secret Lake (1948) Doctor Dolittle and the Green Canary (1950) Doctor Dolittle’s Puddleby Adventures (1952) Other Children’s Books The Story of Mrs. Tubbs (1923) Porridge Poetry (1924) Noisy Nora (1929) The Twilight of Magic (1930) Tommy, Tilly, and Mrs. Tubbs (1936) Works for Adults Children and Internationalism (1924) Victory for the Slain (1942) Please visit www.delphiclassics.com to browse through our range of exciting titles or to purchase this eBook as a Parts Edition of individual eBooks
