Download or read book God s Twofold Love written by William den Boer and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2010-10-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though it has always been widely debated, the theology of Jacob Arminius (1559–1609) has not received the scholarly attention one would expect. Given also its remarkable influence, it is surprising how little research has been devoted to it. Only since the 1980s has the world of scholarship seen some movement on this front. The present study by William den Boer offers a new contribution to the understanding of Arminius's theology by focusing on the theological motive that lay at its very foundation. Arminius has been characterized as a theologian of free will, of creation, or of freedom, and lately also as a theologian of the assurance of faith. The question as to Arminius's central concern in his theology has been answered in different ways, with each author focusing on aspects of differing degrees of importance. William den Boer defends the thesis that another characterization needs to be added, and designates Arminius as a theologian of the justice of God, or more precisely, as a theologian of the twofold love of God. He goes on to illustrate how these two characterizations are valid at one and the same time, and why they do not exclude but include all other characterizations that have been offered by placing them in their proper perspective. In Part 1 the author posits that the leading motif of Arminius's theology lay in a careful defense of the justice of God. Part 2 considers the reception of his theology in the discussions between Remonstrants and Counter-Remonstrants during the Hague Conference – Haagsche or Schriftelicke Conferentie – of 1611. Finally, Arminius's theology is placed within the context of sixteenth-century debates on the cause of sin and God's relationship to evil.

Book Today When You Hear His Voice

Download or read book Today When You Hear His Voice written by Gregory W. Lee and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a doctrine of Scripture based on Hebrews in dialogue with Augustine and Calvin What vision of biblical authority arises from Scripture’s own use of Scripture? This question has received surprisingly little attention from theologians seeking to develop a comprehensive doctrine of Scripture. Today When You Hear His Voice by Gregory W. Lee fills this gap by listening carefully to the Epistle to the Hebrews. Lee illuminates the unique way that Hebrews appropriates Old Testament texts as he considers the theological relationship between salvation history and scriptural interpretation. He illustrates these dynamics through extended treatments of Augustine and Calvin, whose contrasting perspectives on the covenants, Israel, and the literal and figural senses provide theological categories for appreciating how Hebrews innovatively presents Scripture as God’s direct address in the contemporary moment.

Download or read book Life in Christ written by Mark A. Garcia and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In three wide-ranging case studies Mark A. Garcia offers a comprehensive yet focused analysis of the centrality of union with Christ in Calvin's thought. It explains not only the distinctive nature of Calvin's response to Rome on justification, but why this response must be carefully distinguished from that of his Lutheran counterparts. The fruit of these investigations is the first extensive demonstration that Calvin's exposition of union with Christ in relating justification and sanctification points to an emerging Reformed theology of justification that diverges from the Lutheran tradition. Calvin's exegetical and theological model of union with Christ accents the importance in the early Reformed tradition of the relationship between Christology and salvation.

Book Jonathan Edwards s Turn from the Classic Reformed Tradition of Freedom of the Will

Download or read book Jonathan Edwards s Turn from the Classic Reformed Tradition of Freedom of the Will written by Philip John Fisk and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip J. Fisk offers a critical reappraisal of Jonathan Edwards's Freedom of Will, interpreting Edwards from within his own tradition, Reformed Orthodoxy (±1550-1750), avoiding the outdated paradigms of the conventional interpretation of Edwards and his tradition, a so-called deterministic, reconciliationist Calvinism, and demonstrating from primary sources, such as Harvard and Yale commencement theses and quaestiones, that Edwards departed ways with Reformed Orthodoxy's robust and highly nuanced view of freedom of will, contingency, and necessity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stob Lectures, sponsored annually by Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary, have drawn some of today's most celebrated Christian thinkers in the fields of ethics, apologetics, and philosophical theology. This volume collects under one cover each of the Stob Lectures delivered from 1986 to 1998. Comprised of thirteen learned, relevant, and well-crafted addresses, Seeking Understanding presents a diverse range of significant topics, illumined in engaging ways by the scholars who know them best. Lewis B. Smedes's inaugural lecture examines the subject of commitment. James M. Gustafson follows with a look at moral discourse, while Peter Kreeft speaks on immortality. Alvin Plantinga explores the nature of Christian scholarship, and Marty E. Marty surveys the denominational landscape. Allen D. Verhey probes key issues in medical ethics, while Nicholas P. Wolterstorff compares neo-Calvinism and "Yale theology." Other lectures feature Dewey J. Hoitenga Jr. on happiness, John Feikens on conflict, George I. Mavrodes on philosophy, Arthur F. Holmes on Christian education, and J. Harold Ellens on dysfunction. Eleanore Stump rounds out the volume with an insightful discussion of the problem of evil. Illustrative of the same depth of thinking, scholarly passion, and clarity of expression that characterized the work of the man whom these lectures honor, Henry J. Stob, Seeking Understanding is both a valuable omnibus and a superb introduction to a rich and influential tradition of Christian scholarship.
