Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Second Epistle to the Thessalonians Under its modern name of Salonika, Thessalonica, owing to the great war, has become far more widely known than it was previously. Thousands of persons who had hitherto scarcely heard of such a place, and certainly had very vague ideas as to its geographical position, now know accurately where to find it in the map and are aware of its importance with regard to its principal surroundings. But beyond this fact of its having become a very important city, both from a military and from a political point of view, we are in no better position for understanding the condition of the place at the time when a portion of its inhabitants were a community of the deepest interest to St. Paul and multitudes of other Christians. Nor are we likely to be in a better position for so doing when the war is over. On the contrary, we shall probably find that some of the features which a few years ago were not so very different from what they may have been in his day have been either entirely obliterated or very seriously transformed and disfigured. It is true that the war has added rather considerably to our knowledge of the archaeology of the immediate neighbourhood. Some of those who have been obliged through recent events to take up their abode there for a time have used this opportunity for making explorations in the interests of antiquarian research; and their labours have had considerable results. We are now learning a good deal more about the early history of this interesting tract of country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Paul to the Thessalonians, Galatians, Romans, Vol. 2 of 2: With Critical Notes and Dissertations The interest that attaches to the origin of that great ecclesiastical dominion which was to cover the world, though connected by little more than a name with the earlier Greek community which is the subject of our investigation, and the yet stronger interest in gathering up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost, respecting the great Epistle of the Gentile Apostle, will justify our lingering awhile around the probabilities and points of view which have been suggested by commentators. No pains can be too great to illustrate even the least words that bear upon the history of the Apostolical age. Small as the result may be, yet the inquiry will be fruitful. Nor need we be afraid of multiplying uncertainties. The light of theory seems to be needed to make us observe facts. The opinions of almost all have probably contributed something to the increasing clearness and distinctness with which we are able to determine the limits of our knowledge on this subject. Download or read book St Paul s Second Epistle to the Thessalonians written by A. R. Buckland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Second Epistle to the Thessalonians: A Devotional Commentary Possibly in the year 51 St Paul, then at Corinth (Acts xviii. 11), sent to the Christian Church at Thessalonica a letter - our First Epistle to the Thessalonians. The trusted messenger who took that letter to its destination may have returned to St Paul at Corinth. Let us assume - it is a natural assumption - that he did. He would, of course, bring news with him - possibly letters from converts - certainly some account of things as he found them. St Paul's language in 1 Thessalonians enables us to understand something of the anxiety with which the return of that messenger was awaited, and something of the interest which his news would have for the Apostle. First and Second Thessalonians, First and Second Corinthians; Greek d104 With Explanatory Notes In connection with the study of these two Epistles, the student will be greatly profited by a careful reading of Presi dent Hovey's recent work (published since my notes were written), entitled biblical eschatology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of Paul to the Thessalonians: Translated From the Greek, on the Basis of the Common English Version, With Notes No one, for example, can pretend, that clearness of style is eminently characteristic of all the writers of the New Testament. But the translator is not on that account to turn commentator, and labour to make plain and certain to the English reader, what the Holy Spirit chose to leave intricate and perplexed, doubtful and obscure, to the Greek reader. The best version in this respect will be that, which best succeeds in putting the English reader into the precise, relative position of the Greek reader. Book excerpt: The two letters to the Thessalonians dwell richly on the Christian hope and emphasize the significance of the Christian calling in the here and now. Download or read book St Paul s Epistles to the Thessalonians written by Charles J. Ellicott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistles to the Thessalonians: With a Critical and Grammatical Commentary, and a Revised Translation If I may venture to assume that this is really the case, I cannot help feeling that it is to be attributed not only to increased experience, but also to the cautious but somewhat freer admixture of exegesis which two of the three Epistles' contained in the volume seemed more especially to require. This slight modification, and so to say dilution, of the critical and grammatical severity which distinguished the earlier parts of the work has been continued in the present volume, but it has been done both watchfully and cautiously, and will be really seen more in the way of slight addition than in actual change. Time and experience both seem to show that the system of interpretation that I have been enabled to pursue is substantially sound, that plain and patient accu racy in detail does in most cases lead to hopeful results, and serves not unfrequently to guide us to far loftier and more ennobling views of the Word of Life than such an unpre tending method might at first prepare us to expect.
