Book excerpt: Karen Jacobs has landed the job of a lifetime at New York's hottest film studio, Glorious Pictures, which is headed by a pair of famously competitive and ambitious brothers, Phil and Tony Waxman. The young publicist quickly finds herself with an all-access pass to the tantrums, whims, follies, neuroses, and unimaginable egos of the celebrities who star in Glorious's films -- but this comes as no surprise. It's the absolute insanity inside the company that knocks her for a loop. Extremely competitive and cutthroat, the Glorious executives continuously search for ways to outdo, outscheme, and outmaneuver each other in their attempts to impress the Waxmans. In the tradition of The Devil Wears Prada, real-life movie publicist Rachel Pine's razor-sharp satire captures perfectly the behind-the-scenes machinations of the film industry in all its glory.

Book excerpt: Karen Jacobs has heard plenty of stories about Glorious Pictures and Phil and Tony Waxman, the notorious twin brothers who co-founded the film studio and now run it with four iron fists. But she doesn't hesitate when she's offered a job there, knowing it's a great career move. At Glorious, as she expected, she finds herself with an all-access pass to the tantrums, whims, follies, neuroses and unimaginable egos of the celebrities who star in their films. But what knocks her for a loop is the absolute insanity inside the company -- executives who are continuously searching for ways to outdo, outscheme, and outmanoeuvre each other in an effort to impress the hideous Waxmans. This deliciously dishy novel is jam-packed with insider movie gossip. Rachel Pine was an assistant at Miramax and this is a thinly-veiled account of her time there. Phil and Tony Waxman are based on Bob and Harvey Weinstein and the movies and their whiny, demanding stars are easily identified, for example The Foreign Pilot (The English Patient), The Gravedigger (The Pallbearer), Shriek (Scream), etc. Stars and celebs that get a look in include Woody Allen, Matt Damon and Ben Afleck, Gwyneth Paltrow, a David Schwimmer-alike (and his hit sitcom Fuckbuddies - hmm, wonder what that could be), Larry Flynt, Anna Wintour, various hip hop artistes u and the list just goes on and on. With hilarious accounts of the machinations behind the Oscars, film premieres, audience testing, what happens when a canine star unexpectedly dies (you find a stand in, duh!) and much much more, this is a must read for movie fans as well as anyone who loves dummy-spit tell-alls like THE NANNY DIARIES and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA.

Book excerpt: These days, it seems no one Lola knows can write a letter to the editor without having it optioned for a major motion picture. Sure, Lola thinks, I have a great geek-hottie husband and a cool apartment in “up and coming” Brooklyn—but just once, can’t I write some random article and have Jodie Foster call me for the film rights? Or jeez, okay, Minnie Driver. Just something? Then one night at a swanky book party, Lola finds her author friend Mimi McKee dead in the basement, throat slashed with a broken martini glass. And when the bodies of It-Girl writers begin to pile up, Lola starts asking dangerous questions: Are the murders connected? Am I next? If not, um, why not? If I solve the mystery, then will my agent remember my name? As Lola digs deeper, the stakes grow higher. Will getting her hands on the killer—and the book deal bound to follow—mean losing the people she loves most?

Book The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit

Download or read book The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit written by Heike Missler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chick lit is the marketing label attributed to a surge of books published in the wake of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary (1996) and Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City (1997). Branded by their pink or pastel-coloured book covers, chick-lit novels have been a highly successful and ubiquitous product of women's popular culture since the late 1990s. This study traces the evolution of chick lit not only as a genre of popular fiction, but as a cultural phenomenon. It complicates the genealogy of the texts by situating them firmly in the context of age-old debates about female literary creation, and by highlighting the dynamics of the popular-fiction market. Offering a convincing dissection of the formula which lies at the heart of chick lit, as well as in-depth analyses of a number of chick-lit titles ranging from classic to more recent and edgier texts, this book yields new insights into a relatively young field of academic study. Its close readings provide astute assessments of chick lit's notoriously skewed representational politics, especially with regard to sexuality and ethnicity, which feed into current discussions about postfeminism. Moreover, the study makes a unique contribution to the scholarly debate of chick lit by including an analysis of the (online) fan communities the genre has fostered. The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit weaves a sound methodological network, drawing on reader-response criticism; feminist, gender, and queer theory; affect studies; and whiteness studies. This book is an accessible and engaging study for anyone interested in postfeminism and popular culture.

Book excerpt: From the best-selling author of Bright Lights, Big City: a sexy, vibrant, cross-generational New York story--a literary and commercial triumph of the highest order. Even decades after their arrival, Corrine and Russell Calloway still feel as if they’re living the dream that drew them to New York City in the first place: book parties or art openings one night and high-society events the next; jobs they care about (and in fact love); twin children whose birth was truly miraculous; a loft in TriBeCa and summers in the Hamptons. But all of this comes at a fiendish cost. Russell, an independent publisher, has superb cultural credentials yet minimal cash flow; as he navigates a business that requires, beyond astute literary judgment, constant financial improvisation, he encounters an audacious, potentially game-changing—or ruinous—opportunity. Meanwhile, instead of chasing personal gain in this incredibly wealthy city, Corrine devotes herself to helping feed its hungry poor, and she and her husband soon discover they’re being priced out of the newly fashionable neighborhood they’ve called home for most of their adult lives, with their son and daughter caught in the balance. Then Corrine’s world is turned upside down when the man with whom she’d had an ill-fated affair in the wake of 9/11 suddenly reappears. As the novel unfolds across a period of stupendous change—including Obama’s historic election and the global economic collapse he inherited—the Calloways will find themselves and their marriage tested more severely than they ever could have imagined.

Book Literature of New York

Download or read book Literature of New York written by Sabrina Fuchs-Abrams and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature of New York is the first collection of critical essays to look at historical and contemporary images of New York through an examination of works of literature by New York writers about New York. New York City is a study in contradictions; it offers at once a sense of possibility, cultivation, self-realization and a fear of corruption, decay, and despair. The literature of New York is representative of American national identity and of the unique nature of the metropolitan, urban experience. The essays are arranged chronologically to reflect the changing significance of the city in relation to various movements in American literary and cultural history. It includes essays on the relation of urban public space to various editions of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass; the theme of surveillance in the literature of New York by Herman Melville, Edith Wharton, and Ann Petry; fear of the cultural Other within modern New York in Henry James’ "The Jolly Corner"; use of the setting of New York City to emphasize both the dynamic energy and increasing anxiety of the modern American cityscape in Dos Passos' Manhattan Transfer (1925); the satiric portrayal of New York society in the 1920s and 30s in Dorothy Parker's recently collected stories and sketches; the response to post-WWII New York City in fictionalized autobiography in the personal narratives of Audre Lorde and Diane di Prima; the poetics of second generation New York School poet Ted Berrigan in relation to his predecessors; the representation of New York in postmodern fiction, depicting at once a sense of loss at the inability to return to the old neighborhood of the past in Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis and the possibility of reasserting order and meaning amidst the chaos and terror of post-911 New York in Jay McInerney’s The Good Life (2006). Whether expressing nostalgia for the past, hope for the future, fear of the unknown, or the possibility of self-actualization, the literature of New York continues to draw inspiration from its locale and is as complex, contradictory, and creative as the City itself. Contributors include Karen Karbiener, Mark James Noonan, Jonathan Readey, Heidi E. Bollinger, Sabrina Fuchs-Abrams, Kirsten Bartholomew Ortega, Michael Angelo Tata, Jessica Maucione, and Sonia Baelo-Allué.
