Book excerpt: Sayings of Gorakhnath presents a translation of late-medieval texts in Old Hindi, traditionally attributed to one of the founders of the Order of Nath Yogis. The Naths are associated with the creation and development of hatha yoga, with important historical and ideological links to Hindu tantra and alchemy. The texts gathered in this collection on the one hand provide a criticism of religious authority based on external knowledge lacking personal experience, while on the other hand they celebrate the path of yoga and its methods of engagement with the subtle body and its centres of occult energy and miraculous powers. The ultimate goal of the style of yoga described in the Sayings of Gorakhnath concerns the attainment of immortality and divinization of its adepts. This is achieved by redirecting the trajectory of the seminal fluid, which in the process transforms into the elixir, the amrt. In order to accomplish that goal, a regime of yogic practices is suggested, consisting of the assumption of a steady posture, breathing exercises, mantra chanting, and meditation. Djudjevic and Singh's translations are preceded by an introduction and accompanied by notes, which contextualize and elucidate the subject matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered in Kashmir, Shiva Sutras have a distinguished place among the spiritual scriptures of Sanatana dharma. About 250 years ago, there lived in Kashmir a Brahmin Shiva devotee named Vasugupta. He once had a dream in which he was directed by Lord Shiva himself to find a cave on the Shankara hill. He was told that inside it he would find a huge rock, on turning which he would receive the spiritual knowledge bestowed by Shiva himself. He was directed to absorb it and spread it in the society. The very next day Vasugupta went to the said place with a few others. There he beheld the same cave and the same rock. On turning the rock he found 77 sutras carved on it. These same sutras have reached us through the blessings of the great Shiva devotee Vasugupta. These sutras are in three parts- 1.Shambhavopaya, 2. Shaktopaya, and 3. Anvopaya. Lord Shiva, the Adiguru of all the disciplines, has given these indicators in the form of sutras out of compassion for such devotees who are ambitious to know the secrets of creation by becoming self realized through an ardent practice of yoga; for those who would be able to understand and experience these truths in their lives.

These eighty-four masters, some historical, some archetypal, accomplished this practice in India where they lived between the eighth and twelfth centuries. Leading unconventional lives, the siddhas include some of the greatest Buddhist teachers; Tilopa, Naropa, and Marpa among them. Through many years of study, Keith Dowman has collected and translated their songs of realization and the legends about them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Hinduism’ is a term often used to summarize the aspirations of the majority of the Indian people. But any simple definition of it is difficult, if not impossible. This is partly owing to the nuances of the Sanskrit language, in which many texts are written, and partly to the too literal interpretation of Hindu imagery and mythology that often veils its real significance. This book, first published in 1977, is an essential reference source that goes some way to clarifying the difficulties of understanding Hinduism.
