Book Sidney Hook Reconsidered

Download or read book Sidney Hook Reconsidered written by Matthew J. Cotter and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-08-25 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Afterword by Richard RortyThe current intensification of scholarly interest in the response of American intellectuals to the rise and fall of American and Soviet Communism, the Cold War, the student movement, and Neo-Conservatism has brought the controversial and fascinating work of Sidney Hook once again to the attention of scholars of American political thought and culture. Beginning his career as the first American scholar of Marxism, a leading disciple of John Dewey, and an early supporter of Soviet Communism, Hook eventually renounced Marxism and came to be one of the most vehement supporters of the Cold War. Throughout his long and unquiet life, Hook was revered as the heir to Dewey's legacy, feared as a fierce polemicist, and criticized from all points of the political spectrum. The essays in this volume are the outcome of a centennial celebration honoring his life and career. In addition to some of his former students, colleagues, allies and adversaries, this volume contains several essays by relatively unknown scholars. The value of their contributions is measured by fresh insights into Hook's philosophical significance, as well as the underlying argument that adequate distance is needed to evaluate his historical relevance. Despite the contentious nature of these two approaches, ultimately these essays represent the comprehensive attempt to both reexamine Hook's legacy and celebrate his life. The contributors include Jo-Ann Boydston, Gary Bullert, Steven Cahn, Matthew Cotter, Michael Eldridge, Barbara Forrest, Nathan Glazer, Neil Jumonville, Marvin Kohl, Paul Kurtz, Tibor Machan, Christopher Phelps, Kathleen Poulos, Edward Shapiro, David Sidorsky, Robert Talisse, and Bruce Wilshire. With a completely revised and updated bibliography of Hook's works, plus an afterword by Richard Rorty, this outstanding collection of essays examining the rich and varied experience of one of America's most misunderstood intellectuals will be of great interest to students and scholars of American intellectual history and philosophy.Matthew J. Cotter (Brooklyn, NY) has been a lecturer at William Paterson University, Baruch College and Hunter College at the City University of New York (CUNY). He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in American history at the City University of New York's Graduate Center.

Book Lowell L Bennion

Download or read book Lowell L Bennion written by Mary Lythgoe Bradford and published by Dialogue Foundation. This book was released on 1995 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lowell L. Bennion is legendary in many circles. An LDS institute instructor and professor of sociology at the University of Utah, he was never content simply to quantify social ills or to preach against them but actively set out to correct what he could. He founded and directed the Teton Valley Boys Ranch, served as executive director for the Salt Lake City Community Services Council, and organized other charities. His heart was with the underprivileged. He detested Pharisaism and often quoted biblical passages on the topic adapted to a Mormon ear: As your treading is upon the poor, ... I hate, I despise your f(ast) days, and I will not (dwell in) your solemn assemblies ... Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear ... Woe unto them that are at ease in Zion. Bennion passed away in 1996 just after this biography was released, leaving an enormous void where he had been a beacon to humanitarian and liberation causes in his community.

Book Making Schools American

Download or read book Making Schools American written by Cody D. Ewert and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How school reformers in the Progressive Era—who envisioned the public school as the quintessential American institution—laid the groundwork for contemporary battles over the structure and curriculum of public schools. Around the turn of the twentieth century, a generation of school reformers began touting public education's unique capacity to unite a diverse and diffuse citizenry while curing a broad swath of social and political ills. They claimed that investing in education would equalize social and economic relations, strengthen democracy, and create high-caliber citizens equipped for the twentieth century, all while preserving the nation's sacred traditions. More than anything, they pitched the public school as a quintessentially American institution, a patriotic symbol in its own right—and the key to perfecting the American experiment. In Making Schools American, Cody Dodge Ewert makes clear that nationalism was the leading argument for schooling during the Progressive Era. Bringing together case studies of school reform crusades in New York, Utah, and Texas, he explores what was gained—and lost—as efforts to transform American schools evolved across space and time. Offering fresh insight into the development and politicization of public schooling in America, Ewert also reveals how reformers' utopian visions and lofty promises laid the groundwork for contemporary battles over the mission and methods of American public schools. Despite their divergent political visions and the unique conditions of the states, cities, and individual districts they served, school reformers wielded nationalistic rhetoric that made education a rallying point for Americans across lines of race, class, religion, and region. But ultimately, Making Schools American argues, upholding education as a potential solution to virtually every societal problem has hamstrung broader attempts at social reform while overburdening schools.
