PLAYING POSSUM. In a letter of the lamented Capt. Upson, to his wife, dated at Annapolis, May 16th, the following graphically told story of his capture at Chancellorsville is given. After speaking of the general movement to the rear, which, not hearing Col. Wooster's order to fall back, he did not understand, he says: "All this time I thought our forces would rally and repossess the works. If they should do so, there would be a chance for me. Hoping that such would be the result I concluded to try a little strategy. I cast myself upon the ground as if dead. Before I could conceal anything a regiment came up, but fortunately changed direction by the right flank at the edge of the bushes. I kept one eye open as they passed along and many a one seeing me exclaimed: 'there is a dead Yankee.' As soon as possible I hid my watch under the leaves, but before anything else could be got under, a party was upon me; one took my pistol, another my wallet, another my map, etc. In this way the thing went on for three hours. Straggling Rebs would pass, feel of me, perhaps, and ask--' Are you dead, mister?' (Of course I did'nt wake up to tell them). Some would discuss whether I had been an officer, or not, and so on. All this while I lay and listened and sweat, for the sun was hot; and a set of stupid fools they were for not discovering how I played them. It was amusing to hear their conversation. One fellow punched me lightly with his scabbard; another pulled me by the strap and wanted to know where I was shot, but no one seemed to suspect a Yankee trick. Finally, two decent looking fellows (for as they went away I sent a glance after them) came along. Their conversation indicated that they were gentlemen; concluding...

Book African American Connecticut Explored

Download or read book African American Connecticut Explored written by Elizabeth J. Normen and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-27 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Connecticut League of Historic Organization Award of Merit (2015) The numerous essays by many of the state’s leading historians in African American Connecticut Explored document an array of subjects beginning from the earliest years of the state’s colonization around 1630 and continuing well into the 20th century. The voice of Connecticut’s African Americans rings clear through topics such as the Black Governors of Connecticut, nationally prominent black abolitionists like the reverends Amos Beman and James Pennington, the African American community’s response to the Amistad trial, the letters of Joseph O. Cross of the 29th Regiment of Colored Volunteers in the Civil War, and the Civil Rights work of baseball great Jackie Robinson (a twenty-year resident of Stamford), to name a few. Insightful introductions to each section explore broader issues faced by the state’s African American residents as they struggled for full rights as citizens. This book represents the collaborative effort of Connecticut Explored and the Amistad Center for Art & Culture, with support from the State Historic Preservation Office and Connecticut’s Freedom Trail. It will be a valuable guide for anyone interested in this fascinating area of Connecticut’s history. Contributors include Billie M. Book Madison Connecticut in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Madison Connecticut in the Twentieth Century written by Charlotte L. Evarts Memorial Archives and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 20th century, Madison progressed slowly from a rural economy to one based on seasonal residents and then to that of a largely residential community. The development along the shoreline that marked the first 50 years of the century eventually spread inland to the rest of Madison. From 1,500 residents in 1900, the population swelled to a suburban community of over 16,000. This book is a photographic journey of this growing town, which changed significantly following the completion of the Connecticut Turnpike. Images document commercial establishments, the 1938 hurricane, the Field Company, the Future Farmers Fair, and the construction of the Connecticut Turnpike.

Book The Connecticut Yankee in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The Connecticut Yankee in the Twentieth Century written by Bud Foote and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first examples of travel to the past appear early in the nineteenth century, but it was not until the publication of Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court that we see a hero taking advantage of a combination of hindsight and advances in technology to build an empire in the past. Given that this scenario is such a common twentieth-century fantasy, its late appearance is somewhat surprising. As fewer and fewer writers find travel to the future an appealing scenario, travel to the past and to paratime--alternative universes--have come increasingly to the forefront. Twain's Connecticut Yankee contains, explicitly or implicitly, most of the problems and themes which later writers have wrung out of past time-travel. Concentrating on travel to the past, this study details, both in Twain's seminal work and in its science fiction successors, the various roles played by the traveller to the past--nostalgic, tourist, imperialist, Oedipal hero, and existential isolate--and attempts to relate these roles both to the rest of Twain's work and to the world-view of contemporary America. While other writers have dealt with time travel as part of a general survey of science fiction, Foote's study is among the first to relate it to the body of Mark Twain's work and to attempt to account for the appeal of time travel to the past in historical, geographical, and psychological terms. Because it straddles several disciplines, it will appeal to those interested in science fiction, American literature, and popular culture.

Book Connecticut s Indigenous Peoples

Download or read book Connecticut s Indigenous Peoples written by Lucianne Lavin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVDIVMore than 10,000 years ago, people settled on lands that now lie within the boundaries of the state of Connecticut. Leaving no written records and scarce archaeological remains, these peoples and their communities have remained unknown to all but a few archaeologists and other scholars. This pioneering book is the first to provide a full account of Connecticut’s indigenous peoples, from the long-ago days of their arrival to the present day./divDIV /divDIVLucianne Lavin draws on exciting new archaeological and ethnographic discoveries, interviews with Native Americans, rare documents including periodicals, archaeological reports, master’s theses and doctoral dissertations, conference papers, newspapers, and government records, as well as her own ongoing archaeological and documentary research. She creates a fascinating and remarkably detailed portrait of indigenous peoples in deep historic times before European contact and of their changing lives during the past 400 years of colonial and state history. She also includes a short study of Native Americans in Connecticut in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This book brings to light the richness and diversity of Connecticut’s indigenous histories, corrects misinformation about the vanishing Connecticut Indian, and reveals the significant roles and contributions of Native Americans to modern-day Connecticut./divDIVDIV/div/div/div
