Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie Diamond was raised by incredible parents in Prairie Town, Oregon where everyone knows their neighbors and a kid can't get away with anything. To top that off, her father is the small town's preacher, making her nearly untouchable. But that doesn't stop one boy from crossing the line in the sand her father has drawn. Bentley Lawrence III has also been born and raised in Prairie Town as well. As a matter of fact, he's from four generations back, and his family owns a huge ranch, and logging land that employees most of the town. Bentley's twin sister, Stephanie Lawrence is best friends with Charlie, and somewhere between kindergarten and high school Bentley has fallen madly in love with Charlie. Sometimes, though, love just isn't enough, not when unbearable tragedy hits when that seems an insufferable possibility. When Charlie's world falls out from beneath her, a deathbed promise, and a loving best friend, sends Charlie on a whirlwind to find herself and live the dreams she promised Bentley she'd live.

Book Regulating Assisted Reproductive Technologies

Download or read book Regulating Assisted Reproductive Technologies written by Amel Alghrani and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive science continues to revolutionise reproduction and propel us further into uncharted territories. The revolution signalled by the birth of Louise Brown after IVF in 1978, prompted governments across Europe and beyond into regulatory action. Forty years on, there are now dramatic and controversial developments in new reproductive technologies. Technologies such as uterus transplantation that may enable unisex gestation and babies gestated by dad; or artificial wombs that will completely divorce reproduction from the human body and allow babies to be gestated by machines, usher in a different set of legal, ethical and social questions to those that arose from IVF. This book revisits the regulation of assisted reproduction and advances the debate on from the now much-discussed issues that arose from IVF, offering a critical analysis of the regulatory challenges raised by new reproductive technologies on the horizon.

Book Fuelling War

Download or read book Fuelling War written by Philippe Le Billon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generous endowment of natural resources should favour rapid economic and social development. The experience of countries like Angola and Iraq, however, suggests that resource wealth often proves a curse rather than a blessing. Billions of dollars from resource exploitation benefit repressive regimes and rebel groups, at a massive cost for local populations. This Adelphi Paper analyses the economic and political vulnerability of resource-dependent countries; assesses how resources influence the likelihood and course of conflicts; and discusses current initiatives to improve resource governance in the interest of peace. It concludes that long-term stability in resource-exporting regions will depend on their developmental outcomes, and calls for a broad reform agenda prioritising the basic needs and security of local populations.

Download or read book Blindsight written by Peter Watts and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2006-10-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugo and Shirley Jackson award-winning Peter Watts stands on the cutting edge of hard SF with his acclaimed novel, Blindsight Two months since the stars fell... Two months of silence, while a world held its breath. Now some half-derelict space probe, sparking fitfully past Neptune's orbit, hears a whisper from the edge of the solar system: a faint signal sweeping the cosmos like a lighthouse beam. Whatever's out there isn't talking to us. It's talking to some distant star, perhaps. Or perhaps to something closer, something en route. So who do you send to force introductions with unknown and unknowable alien intellect that doesn't wish to be met? You send a linguist with multiple personalities, her brain surgically partitioned into separate, sentient processing cores. You send a biologist so radically interfaced with machinery that he sees x-rays and tastes ultrasound. You send a pacifist warrior in the faint hope she won't be needed. You send a monster to command them all, an extinct hominid predator once called vampire, recalled from the grave with the voodoo of recombinant genetics and the blood of sociopaths. And you send a synthesist—an informational topologist with half his mind gone—as an interface between here and there. Pray they can be trusted with the fate of a world. They may be more alien than the thing they've been sent to find. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959

Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959 written by Graham Webb and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a "filler" in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s.
