Book excerpt: Get wrapped up in this absorbing, twisting tale from New York Times bestselling author Carla Neggers as FBI agents Sharpe and Donovan face their greatest danger yet. Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan, two of the FBI’s most valuable agents, are preparing for their next big assignment—their wedding—when Colin’s brother Mike alerts them that onetime friends from his military past are on Sharpe and Donovan home turf on the Maine coast. Now private security contractors, they want to meet with Mike. One of them, an FBI agent named Kavanagh, is supposed to be on leave. What is he investigating—or does he have his own agenda? Mike zeroes in on Naomi MacBride, a freelance civilian intelligence analyst who, aside from a few hot nights, has never brought him anything but trouble. Newly returned from England, Naomi clearly isn’t telling Mike everything about why she’s snooping around his home town, but he has no choice but to work with her if he wants to uncover what’s really going on. But the case soon takes a drastic turn—Emma is targeted, and a connection surfaces between Naomi and Kavanagh and a recently solved international art theft case. Not every connection is a conspiracy, but as the tangled web of secrets unravels, Emma and Colin face their greatest danger yet. With everyone they know involved, they must decide who they can trust…or lose everything for good. Previously published

Download or read book The Inn Keeper s Daughters written by Jeffery J. Nicholas and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-10-14 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861 the American Civil War was raging. In 1861 in Southampton the first modern docks were thriving after the arrival of the railway. In French Street, on the edge of a medieval slum within the old walled town, the Bell Inn was kept by the Day family. There were two daughters: the youngest restless, ambitious and inclined to behave badly. In December a Confederate commerce raider entered the port seeking repairs. Discovered, she was bottled up there by a Union warship. CSS Nashvilles crew adopted the Bell as their favourite run ashore, which led to an elopement and in the end a desperate journey across war-torn America.
Download or read book The Code of Cuenca written by James F. Powers and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometime around 1190, King Alfonso VIII of Castile granted a royal charter to the community of Cuenca, a Castilian frontier town recently recaptured from the Muslims and resettled by Christians. The royal charter was in the form of a law code, or fuero. Fueros, which evolved from short lists of exceptions to standing royal directives into much more extensive commentaries on legal matters, were used as an incentive to Christian settlement on the frontier. Reflecting the complexities of administering a town that still had large Muslim and Jewish populations, the fuero or code of Cuenca was meant to assure the permanence of Christian conquest and settlement. James Powers provides the first translation into English of this notable historical document. The Code of Cuenca is of great importance to legal historians, particularly as a comparison to contemporary English and other European law texts. Because there is no similar urban compilation anywhere else in twelfth-century Europe that contains significant descriptions of everyday life in a medieval frontier town, the code will serve as a primary source for scholars and students of medieval Iberian and western European political, economic, and social history.
