Book The Turtles of New England Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Turtles of New England Classic Reprint written by Harold L. Babcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turtles of New England IN 1857, Agassiz wrote: To tell American students that little is known of the habits of Turtles, the laying of their eggs, the growth of their young, etc., would perhaps excite a smile in those who, as boys, have been in the habit of collecting Turtles' eggs, egg-hunting being an occupation of which boys are fond all the world over. Yet so it is: what every imbabi tant of the country may have seen again and again has not yet been collected in scientific works. The same conditions, although to a far less extent, still exist, and my aim in the present monograph has been to collect and classify what is known today of the life histories of New England Chelonians. Book The Turtles Snakes Frogs and Other Reptiles and Amphibians of New England and the North Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Turtles Snakes Frogs and Other Reptiles and Amphibians of New England and the North Classic Reprint written by Edward Knobel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turtles, Snakes, Frogs and Other Reptiles and Amphibians of New England and the North Many of the animals mentioned in this book suffer from our prejudices far more than any other class. They are usually little known, but persecuted, feared, hated and ruthlessly destroyed wherever found. Foremost, the snakes: these timid, watchful, silent and most graceful beings are for the most part perfectly harmless. Liven the dangerous ones only use their terrible weapons in self-defence. Turtles and frogs are often regarded as if void of feeling and ruthlessly tortured. Toads and salamanders. Useful insect-destroyers, are truly homely to look at, but hiding under ground or beneath stones seem to try their best not to hurt our feelings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two lonely Londoners bond over a plan to free the sea turtles at the city zoo in this touching novel from a cult-favorite author who has drawn comparisons to J.D. Salinger and Kurt Vonnegut. A wise and touching classic that “crackles with witty detail, mordant intelligence and self-deprecating irony,” from the author of Riddley Walker (Time) Life in a city can be atomizing, isolating. And it certainly is for William G. and Neaera H., the strangers at the center of Russell Hoban’s surprisingly heartwarming novel Turtle Diary. William, a clerk at a used bookstore, lives in a rooming house after a divorce that has left him without home or family. Neaera is a successful writer of children’s books, who, in her own estimation, “looks like the sort of spinster who doesn’t keep cats and is not a vegetarian. Looks…like a man’s woman who hasn’t got a man.” Entirely unknown to each other, they are both drawn to the turtle tank at the London Zoo with “minds full of turtle thoughts,” wondering how the turtles might be freed. And then comes the day when Neaera walks into William’s bookstore, and together they form an unlikely partnership to make what seemed a crazy dream become a reality.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Joys: The Story of a New England Summer I have been counting my Springs not all of them and it is quite ten years since I was in the country, especially this dear New England country, at this season of the year. To be sure, my Adam and I have had each Spring a few rapturous hours with the apple blossoms in our private Paradise of crab trees and hawthorns in the woods; but to live in an orchard during the bridal season of the year, that comes but seldom in the life of a city woman, and alas! Almost never to a city man. If only my Adam could per suade that severe angel with the flaming sword, whose name is Necessity, to look the other way for a mo ment while he crept past into Paradise with me, my cup of joy would be as full as the Psalmist's; and his ran over. Book Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States Vol 3

Download or read book Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States Vol 3 written by Edward Howe Forbush and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States, Vol. 3: Land Birds From Sparrows to Thrushes The editor of a posthumous volume is under a handicap in endeavoring to express the feelings of the author of the book to the many individuals who assisted in its preparation. Fortunately, I had come to know Mr. Forbush rather intimately during the several years immediately preceding his death, when it was my privilege to act as his assistant in pre paring material for these volumes. Edward Howe Forbush was a'man of great attainments in the fields of economic ornithology and of wildlife conservation, but he was also a man of great modesty. While he was continually consulted by scientists of the highest standing as well as by the veriest tyros in bird study, he was always ready to give full credit to those who had contributed in any way to his fund of information. It was his intention to acknowledge his indebted ness to all those who had assisted him, in the preface of the third volume of The Birds of Massachusetts. It is not possible for me to name all those to whom Mr. Forbush felt indebted, but all who assisted him and whose work is not herein acknowledged, will have the satisfaction of knowing that they have made a contribution to a work of real value, which has added to the knowledge and pleasure of countless individuals. First to whom Mr. Forbush tendered grateful recognition was his wife, to whom he was married in 1882 and who survives him. Throughout the long period of their life together, Mrs. Forbush not only encouraged him in his chosen work, but was of much assistance to him in many ways. Although crippled by illness in recent years, she spent many long hours in reading and revising his manuscript and in painstaking correction of the proof of The Birds of Massachusetts, and her criticisms were always constructive and helpful.
