Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Turkish Problem: Things Seen and a Few Deductions Some British friends - experts in Eastern questions, who have lived many years in the East and learnt the languages and moods of the men of the East - have expressed the view that it would not be inexpedient to publish an English translation of this book, deeming it, in their kind indulgence, a truthful picture of the mosaic of nations and creeds constituting Turkey, that main factor in the Eastern Question, which more than ever towers above the political horizon. With regard to English readers, the book, however, calls for a few preliminary words. It was originally conceived as a purely French book, designed exclusively for the French general public. That unavoidably narrow French frame could include nothing but such instances of French work and French interests in Turkey as would easily appeal to the addressed readers. Book The Eastern Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Eastern Question Classic Reprint written by Henry A. Munro-Butler-Johnstone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eastern Question There is on this subject a circular memorandum of Lord Palmerston's, dated January, 1848, and addressed by him as Foreign Secretary to the representatives of her Majesty abroad, in which he clearly lays down that it is entirely a matter of discretion whether the British Government should interfere authoritatively to protect the British holders of foreign bonds in the case of repudiating States, and that its right so to interfere was, so far as international law was concerned, indisputable; and exactly the same doc trine was laid down by statesmen on both sides of the House, Lord Palmerston included, in a debate in the House of Commons in June, 1847, on a motion by Lord George Bentinck. If, then, we have a clear and indisputable right to interfere authoritatively in the event of a financial collapse occurring, it is surely not too much to argue that our right to friendly remonstrance, to prevent such a collapse when it seems imminent, is equally indisputable; and with a normal deficit of something like in the annual Budget, is or is not a financial collapse im minent? But I do not rest our right to interfere either on the general or the special plea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in the East: An Illustrated History of the Conflict Between Russia and Turkey With a Review of the Eastern Question The author of this work has made the Eastern Question for nearly twenty. Years a subject of constant and special study. As a member of the editorial staff of the New York Tribune, and contributor to other daily and weekly papers of New York, he has had many occasions to discuss it editorially in its various aspects, and as editor of and contributor to several cyclopaedias 'and other publications, he has made himself familiar with the entire literature on this subject. Book The Russo Turkish War Vol 1

Download or read book The Russo Turkish War Vol 1 written by Henry Montague Hozier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russo-Turkish War, Vol. 1: Including an Account of the Rise and Decline of the Ottoman Power, and the History of the Eastern Question It is to the enterprise of a Frenchman, M. Dc Lesseps, warmly supported by many of his country men, that is due the great undertaking of modern times for uniting Europe with India and Australia by means of a sea canal cut through the Isthmus of Suez. The French have long had a hankering after Egypt. In the reign of Louis XIV. The philosophic politician Leibnitz drew up a paper recommending to the king a conquest of Egypt, from which he anticipated immense benefits to mankind, and especially to France. The memoir was seen by few, but doubtless was known to Napoleon I., who carefully studied it, and en deavoured to put it in practice. His disappoint ment at the ultimate failure of his plan of conquest is said to have drawn from him the complaint that his life was une carriére manquée, a wasted career. The prevailing idea of Leibnitz was that the introduction of a European administration into Egypt would produce more effect in securing the civilization of the East than any other possible proceeding. The reason why the Christian Cru sades produced no lasting result in the East is that they obtained no permanent footing in those regions, nor established any system of government there. Both Philip Augustus of France and Richard Coeur de Lion had striven to capture and retain Damietta, but in vain. Cardinal Ximenes originated a league between Castile, Portugal, and England for the conquest of Egypt; and Michaud, the French historian, believes that the saintly King Louis IX. Meant to colonize the Egyptian territories. He at least established a protectorate over the Latin Christians in Syria that has never yet been absolutely disregarded, and which had no small influence in producing the Crimean War. Book Reading Book of the Turkish Language with a Grammar and Vocabulary Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reading Book of the Turkish Language with a Grammar and Vocabulary Classic Reprint written by William Burckhardt Barker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading Book of the Turkish Language With a Grammar and Vocabulary The object of the present work is to assist the student in arriving at a more intimate acquaintance with the Turkish language than can be acquired by means of the grammars which have hitherto been published, and which are either incorrect or too complex for a general reader. For a person who aspires to read and write a language with any degree of accuracy, something more is necessary than a superficial knowledge of grammatical rules. He must study its construction and possess a just conception of its organization; and this the author ventures to hope may be effected by following the plan laid down in these pages. While it is impossible to foresee all the difficulties that may arise in the mind of a student, the author has done his best towards anticipating them, and in this task he has been mainly guided by the remarks and questions put to him by his pupils in the several stages of their progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turks and Christians: A Solution of the Eastern Question The object which I have in view in publishing this volume is to give the reader a fair insight into the present condition of the Turks and the Christians, and, by that means, to awaken the sympathies of the English public on behalf of the oppressed Rayahs of Turkey. It is undoubted that, at the present moment, those sympathies are withheld, and while in Russia, Germany, Austria, and Italy, the public mind has been horrified at the atrocities committed in the Herzegovina, and deeply moved by the sufferings of the unfortunate refugees, who are outcasts from their homes and have sought a refuge in Croatia, Dalmatia, and Montenegro, England, that was the first to break the manacles of the slave, looks calmly on, and manifests little or no concern in the misfortunes of the Christian.
