Book The Truth About the South African Question

Download or read book The Truth About the South African Question written by R. Hutcheson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About the South African Question: Washington, D. C., April 25, 1900 Mr. Webster Davis, of Kansas City, late Assistant Secretary of the Interior, has just returned from a visit to the scene of hostilities in South Africa, and has taken to the lecture platform to tell the American people what their duties are in the British-Boer war. He thunders considerably in the index, but whether the execution of his self-appointed task shall keep pace with the vigor of his pronunciamento, which has not always been the case in adventures of this kind, remains to be seen. In the laughable comedy of This by and Pyramus it was thought necessary to give assurance to timid ladies in the audience that there was no live lion on the stage with veritable teeth and claws, the prologue telling them plainly that what appeared to be a lion was not a lion, but only "Snug, the joiner," a "man as other men are." The most superficial observer in pit or proscenium in Mr. Davis' Opera House gatherings will not be deceived concerning the true nature of the exhibition without a prologue to announce it! Book The Unresolved National Question in South Africa

Download or read book The Unresolved National Question in South Africa written by Edward Webster and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the way in which various strands of left thought have addressed the National Question. The re-emergence of debates on the decolonisation of knowledge has revived interest in the National Question, which began over a century ago and remains unresolved. Tensions that were suppressed and hidden in the past are now being openly debated. Despite this, the goal of one united nation living prosperously under a constitutional democracy remains elusive. This edited volume examines the way in which various strands of left thought have addressed the National Question, especially during the apartheid years, and goes on to discuss its relevance for South Africa today and in the future. Instead of imposing a particular understanding of the National Question, the editors identified a number of political traditions and allowed contributors the freedom to define the question as they believed appropriate - in other words, to explain what they thought was the Unresolved National Question. This has resulted in a rich tapestry of interweaving perceptions. The volume is structured in two parts. The first examines four foundational traditions: Marxism-Leninism (the Colonialism of a Special Type thesis); the Congress tradition; the Trotskyist tradition; and Africanism. The second part explores the various shifts in the debate from the 1960s onwards, and includes chapters on Afrikaner nationalism, ethnic issues, black consciousness, feminism, workerism and constitutionalism. The editors hope that by revisiting the debates not popularly known among the scholarly mainstream, this volume will become a catalyst for an enriched debate on our identity and our future.
