We must, however, remember, in justice to licensed victuallers, that (as the Protest informs us, page 21) the inn or public house is not a mere drink shop. It ought not to be and there would be no desire to interfere with it, if it, were not so at all. (laughter and applause.) If the licensed victuallers will consent to let people meet on their premises without supplying them with alcohol, they will find very few voices raised against their trade. What right-minded per sons object to, is not social intercourse (we all desire to promote it).but habits which lead to social disturbance, and domestic brawls, which benefit no one' except it be the vendors of intoxicants.
