Book excerpt: In Scripting Jesus, Michael White, famed scholar of early Christian history, reveals how the gospel stories of Jesus were never meant to be straightforward historical accounts, but rather were scripted and honed as performance pieces for four different audiences with four different theological agendas. As he did as a featured presenter in two award-winning PBS Frontline documentaries (“From Jesus to Christ” and “Apocalypse!”), White engagingly explains the significance of some lesser-known aspects of The New Testament; in this case, the development of the stories of Jesus—including how the gospel writers differed from one another on facts, points of view, and goals. Readers of Elaine Pagels, Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, and Bart Ehrman will find much to ponder in Scripting Jesus.

Book The Life of Jesus of Nazareth

Download or read book The Life of Jesus of Nazareth written by Rush Rhees and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Jesus on Earth was like no other before or after. Accounts of His life, are of necessity, either stories or studies based on the gospels and available historical evidence. This landmark study by the renowned biblical scholar Rush Rhees was published in 1904, by Charles Scribner's Sons. The intent which was magnificently fulfilled, was to meet a widespread demand for a non-technical, yet learned and reliable guide to the New Testament. PREFACE; PART I: PREPARATORY; I: The Historical Situation ; II: Sources of our Knowledge of Jesus; III: The Harmony of the Gospels; IV: The Chronology; V: The Early Years of Jesus; VI: John the Baptist; VII: The Messianic Call; VIII: The First Disciples; PART II: THE MINISTRY; I: General Survey of the Ministry; II: The Early Judean Ministry; III: The Ministry in Galilee-Its Aim and Method; IV: The Ministry in Galilee-The New Lesson: V: The Journey Through Perea to Jerusalem; VI: The Final Controversies in Jerusalem; VII: The Last Supper; VIII: The Shadow of Death; IX: The Resurrection; PART III: THE MINISTER; I: The Friend of Men; II: The Teacher with Authority; III: Jesus' Knowledge of Truth; IV: Jesus' Conception of Himself "The aim of this book is to help thoughtful readers of the gospels to discern more clearly the features of him whom those writings inimitably portray. It is avowedly a study rather than a story, and as a companion to the reading of the gospels it seeks to answer some of the questions which are raised by a sympathetic consideration of those narratives. These answers are offered in an unargumentative way, even where the questions are still in debate among scholars. This method has been adopted because technical discussion would be of interest to but few of those whom the book hopes to serve. On some of the questions a non-committal attitude is taken in the belief that for the understanding of the life of Jesus it is of little importance which way the decision finally goes. Less attention has been given to questions of geography and archæology than to those which have a more vital biographical significance. "It is with no lack of reverence for the importance and truth of the divinity of Christ that this book essays to bring the Man Jesus before the mind in the reading of the gospels. The incarnation means that God chose to reveal the divine through a human life, rather than through a series of propositions which formulate truth (Heb. i. 1-4). The most perennially refreshing influence for Christian life and thought is personal discipleship to that Revealer who is able to-day as of old to exhibit in his humanity those qualities which compel the recognition of God manifest in the flesh. "An Appendix is added to furnish references to the wide literature of the subject for the aid of those who wish to study it more extensively and technically; also to discuss some questions of detail which could not be considered in the text." -The Author

Licona turns to Greek classicist Plutarch for an answer, assessing differences that appeared when Plutarch told the same story more than once in his Lives. He suggests the differences in the Gospels often resulted from their authors employing the same compositional devices used by Plutarch.

The church has inherited a rich treasure Of doctrine concern ing its Lord, the result of patient study and, frequently, of heated controversy. It is customary to approach the gospels with this interpretation of Christ as a premise, and such a study has some unquestionable advantages. Book Four Portraits One Jesus 2nd Edition

Download or read book Four Portraits One Jesus 2nd Edition written by Mark L. Strauss and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Christians worldwide, the man Jesus of Nazareth is the centerpiece of history, the object of faith, hope, and worship. Even those who do not follow him admit the vast influence of his life. For anyone interested in knowing more about Jesus, study of the four biblical Gospels is essential. The second edition of Four Portraits, One Jesus has been updated throughout to meet the needs to today's students. It is a thorough yet accessible introduction to the four biblical Gospels and their subject, the life and person of Jesus. Like different artists rendering the same subject using different styles and points of view, the Gospels paint four highly distinctive portraits of the same remarkable Jesus. With clarity and insight, Mark Strauss illuminates these four books addressing the following important areas: First he addresses the nature, origin, methods for study, and historical, religious, and cultural backgrounds of the Gospels. He then moves on to closer study of each narrative and its contribution to our understanding of Jesus, investigating things such as plot, characters, and theme. Finally, he pulls it all together with a detailed examination of what the Gospels teach about Jesus' ministry, message, death, and resurrection, with excursions into the quest for the historical Jesus and the historical reliability of the Gospels. This textbook together with its workbook, video lectures, and laminated sheet gives students everything they need for a thorough and enriching study of Jesus and the Gospels.

Book Chronicle of the Life and Teachings of Jesus of Nazareth

Download or read book Chronicle of the Life and Teachings of Jesus of Nazareth written by Larry Mullins and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-07-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chronicle of the Life and Teachings of Jesus of Nazareth harmonizes with the Gospels as presented in the Bible. These biblical records have been sufficient to change the course of history on our planet for almost two thousand years. However, there are many gaps in the Gospel narratives. As a result, speculations of various kinds about what may have taken place during the so-called “lost years of Jesus” have been published in numerous books and articles. The authors of this Chronicle examined the plausibility of many of these supplementary sources. Only one, in our judgment, contains wholesome and credible substance about these “lost years” that is in congruence with the known Gospels. That source is The Urantia Book. Nearly 800 of the 2097 pages in The Urantia Book are devoted to the life and teachings of Jesus as derived from diverse sources. The authors of The Urantia Book state that they served more as “collectors and editors” rather than as original narrators of this restatement of Jesus' life on earth.* We have no way of verifying the accuracy of this material, and some may object to any attempt to embellish the available historic record in the Gospels. Even so, the Apostle John cautions us that the Gospel record is far from complete: “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” [John 21:25] Surely then, if there is any chance that more of the precious words of Jesus have been recorded, should we not at least investigate this possibility with an open mind? However, whether the reader considers our treatment of the “lost years” as entertaining fiction or as credible history, we trust you will find these episodes in the Chronicle engaging and instructive. We have only scratched the surface of the story of the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as portrayed in The Urantia Book. Although, as we have stated, the Chronicle is consistent with the essential historic narration of the New Testament, The Urantia Book goes further. And its message is urgent, stating that “Of all human knowledge, that which is of greatest value is to know the religious life of Jesus and how he lived it.” If our modest presentation resonates with the reader, we urge you to investigate the source material we used: The Urantia Book. There you will find an abundance of information that we believe is of revelatory magnitude. Our hope is that a new generation of believers will be inspired to follow the Master's example of love and service. Larry MullinsJoan Batson Mullins
