Book The Truly Needy And Other Stories

Download or read book The Truly Needy And Other Stories written by Lucy Honig and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2013-06-07 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1999 Drue Heinz Literature PrizeSelected by Charles JohnsonThese nine stories are teeming with people on the margins, where destitute New Yorkers and determined immigrants are as much at the mercy of social services, media attention, opportunistic politicians, and "quality-of-life" campaigns as they are prey to grinding poverty, dangerous streets, and their own haunting memories. Delving into Lucy Honig's fiction, one is willingly drawn into an intimacy with these resilient, but flawed characters—among them, a woman who cleans a beauty salon, a high school kid who's lost a parent, a runaway Cambodian bride, an actress, and a homeless woman. Crossing paths, these difficult characters often misunderstand and sometimes demean each other, yet they also redeem and rescue one other in odd and unexpected ways. In The Truly Needy, Lucy Honig has created a heartbreaking, imaginative world that is the American urban landscape.

Book After the Funeral and Other Stories

Download or read book After the Funeral and Other Stories written by Tessa Hadley and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterful collection of stories that plumb the depths of everyday life to reveal the shifting tides and hidden undercurrents of ordinary relationships—Tessa Hadley is "one of the greatest stylists alive" (Ron Charles, Washington Post). A Best Book of the Year: TIME, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Vogue “Hadley is pure magic and After the Funeral is a triumph.”—Lily King, New York Times best-selling author of Writers & Lovers and Euphoria In each of these twelve stories, small events have huge consequences. Heloise’s father died in a car crash when she was a little girl; at a dinner party in her forties, she meets someone connected to that long-ago tragedy. Two estranged sisters cross paths at a posh hotel and pretend not to recognize each other. Janie’s bohemian mother plans to marry a man close to Janie’s own age—everything changes when an accident interrupts the wedding party. A daughter caring for her elderly mother during the pandemic becomes obsessed with the woman next door; in the wake of his best friend’s death, a man must reassess his affair with the friend’s wife. Cecilia, a teenager, wakes one morning in Florence on vacation with her parents and sees them for the first time through disenchanted eyes. As psychologically astute as they are emotionally rich, these stories illuminate the enduring conflicts between responsibility and freedom, power and desire, convention and subversion, reality and dreams. A vital addition to Tessa Hadley’s celebrated body of work, After the Funeral and Other Stories showcases what Colm Tóibín describes as "Tessa Hadley's extraordinary skill at making both surface life and deep interiors come fully alive."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its brooding noblewoman, classically beautiful nun, and neurotic child - who is the grandson of the former and the nephew of the latter - "The Nun" becomes a stage as it represents the past and the future of the family, the past and future of Spain. "Moors and Christians" explores, humorously and wisely, the effects of greed, the nefarious nature of covetousness. Alarcon subtitled "The Tall Woman" a "tale of fear," and his protagonist's hair-raising brushes with danger and evil remind one of the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann and Edgar Allan Poe. Don Jorge de Cordoba, the Captain "Poison" of Captain Poison, has always seen himself as an unabashed misogynist, but when his life is saved by a courageous young woman, fate conspires to reverse his outlook.

Book The Withered Arm and Other Stories 1874 1888

Download or read book The Withered Arm and Other Stories 1874 1888 written by Thomas Hardy and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "See if she is dark or fair, and if you can, notice if her hands be white; if not, see if they look as though she had ever done housework, or are milker's hands like mine." So Rhoda Brook, the abandoned mistress of Farmer Lodge, is jealous to discover details of his new bride in 'The Withered Arm', the title story in this selection of Hardy's finest short stories. Hardy's first story, 'Destiny and a Blue Cloak' was written fresh from the success of Far From the Madding Crowd. Beautiful in their own right, these stories are also testing-grounds for the novels in their controversial sexual politics, their refusal of romance structures, and their elegiac pursuit of past, lost loves. Several of the stories in The Withered Arm were collected to form the famous volume, Wessex Tales (1888), the first time Hardy denoted 'Wessex' to describe his fictional world. The Withered Arm is the first of a new two-volume selection of Hardy's short stories, edited with an introduction and notes by Kristin Brady.

Book Interpreting Social Violence in French Culture

Download or read book Interpreting Social Violence in French Culture written by Cynthia A. Bouton and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1847, a grain convoy passed through Buzançais, an obscure village in a remote region of central France that was suffering from hunger, high prices, and widespread unemployment. Villagers intercepted the shipment, invaded granaries and mills, and forced resale of the grain at a just price set by the people. What started as a classic subsistence movement, however, triggered two days of rioting and class hostility punctuated by uncommon property damage and death. Disorder soon spread throughout the region. The Buzançais riot quickly became an evocative symbol of the rights of the people, and stories about the riot have survived into the twenty-first century. In Interpreting Social Violence in French Culture, Cynthia A. Bouton traces how the production and marketing of the Buzançais riot story served political commentators, publishers, authors, illustrators, and local enthusiasts, enabling them to draw upon key points from the 1847 uprising to negotiate issues relevant to their own times. Bouton argues that over time, especially from the 1970s, the persistent integration of stories of social protest into a widening variety of media has helped shape French political identity as one in which the politics of the street has become as customary as the politics of political assemblies. Bouton examines representations of the riot in newspapers, novels, illustrations, popular and scholarly historical narratives, cartoons, television, local spectacles, and on the Internet. She analyzes power relations embedded in texts and in images; the ways in which texts and images complement, complicate, and contradict each other; and the ways in which history, memory, and fiction intersect. Both in 1847 and subsequently, she shows, efforts to reorder the disorder at Buzançais have exposed aspects of French social and cultural attitudes and practices. She demonstrates that the particular media employed to tell the Buzançais story both constrained and empowered the messages conveyed by textual and visual narratives of it, perhaps as much as the ideological positions of authors, illustrators, or producers. By probing the relationship between medium and story in relation to the Buzançais riot, Interpreting Social Violence in French Culture offers a new interpretation of this defining moment in French history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of short stories the author explores a variety of topics pondering over the essence of love as in The Lovebirds and The Experiment, or describing reflections of an old man at the end of life in The Visit, or empathetically dissecting the making of a sociopath sentenced to death by comparing him to the instinctual life of a solitary predator of the Savannah in The Leopard. Humorous insights over a dysfunctional family united in spite of untold love is presented in A Rebellious Story while other stories such as Wife and Scrooge 2011 portray the disorganized and confusing conduct of two self absorbed men, who cannot appreciate the nurturing love that surrounds them.
