Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of the American Flag: With Patriotic Selections and Incidents To the loyal American citizen, wandering in a foreign land no sight is more welcome or more heart-stirring, than the sight of the dear old Stars and Stripes. With what courage and self-devotion does the soldier follow the beloved flag amidst the smoke and carnage of battle, shedding his blood freely to maintain its honor, dying, it may be, in its defense. To every true heart, the flag is not merely a piece of bunting, backed by the power and authority of Government, to enforce its recognition, nor is it merely the emblem of his land, or the insignia of the Nation, but it is the embodiment of a principle, the symbol of those sacred truths handed down to us by the Past as a precious inheritance, and which, if we are not traitors to the trust. Will be as sacredly transmitted by us to the future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Flag of Stripes and Stars: Mirror of the Nation's History, Symbol of Brotherhood and World Unity The Americans in khaki enjoy comforts and privileges to which those in the buff and blue or of the sky-blue uniform of 1812, 1848 or 1861 were strangers. Crowning all, are the right and pleasure of fighting under the national flag once the privilege of the sailor only. We must, if true to history, distinguish between regimental colors and the national standard. It is a proof and one, on the whole, which is rather credit able to our people, of the reality of the more perfect union sought and provided for by our fathers, in the constitution of 1787, that, in the popular mind, things relating to the national colors are supposed to have been always what they are now. It is taken for granted that the thirteen-striped flag of the united colonies, from Jan. 2, 1776, and of the United States from July 4, l776, 'to June 14, 1777, when the stars were added, was, as a matter of course, carried in bat tle and was familiary known by sight to every one. A large majority of the hundred or more popular artists and writers on this subject proceed upon this one obsession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flag Day Manual: Illustrated History of the American Flag No.10 of Vol. I of the McEvoy Magazine was a Flag Day number. As original copies and reprints are out of stock, the material is presented in revised form. As a viewpoint then and now, an excerpt from the editors page of June, 1009, seems pertinent. "Out of the conflicting theories of the meaning of education there comes the accepted agreement that the American citizen must be equipped to satisfy the obligations of American life. The varying qualifications for this adjustment may not be clearly defined, but still the American ideal is exact enough to direct our education toward the attainment of serviceable power of intellect, feelings and will. Under this conception of our ideal, I insist again that the Flag Day exercises be made worthy of intellectual appreciation. Use jingling rhymes if you wish, but let some of the better minds attempt to inspire the school by reproducing the words and the spirit of Sumner and Holmes and Beecher. Book The True Story of the American Flag

Download or read book The True Story of the American Flag written by John Henry Fow and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was induced to make this research by the late William H. Egle, Librarian of the State Library at Harrisburg, whose knowledge of the early history of Pennsylvania was of valuable assistance to me in preparing the data for a history of the country along the Delaware river prior to 1682 (yet unfinished). Mr. Egle agreed with me that the claim of Mr. Canby that Betsy Ross designed and made the first flag was legendary and without that foundation which is so necessary to uphold claims of this character. Statements of such a character, when allowed to go unrefuted, do harm to the history of any people, inasmuch as they encourage others to build "air castles" and purchase old portraits to be palmed off on others as our "grandfather" who "fit" in the Revolution, or our "grandmother" who carried supplies to the troops at Valley Forge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the National Flag: Of the United States of America Emblems and devices, adopted under high excite ment of the public mind, are chosen as epitomes of the sentiments prevailing at the time of their adop tion. Those of the days of our Revolution afford proofs far more striking than the most elaborate argu ments, that, in the estimation of our forefathers, Union, and existence as a nation, were inseparable. The prosecution of our subject has made it necos sary for us to dwell upon those devices, and to de relop those proofs.
