Book The Making of a Mystic Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Making of a Mystic Classic Reprint written by Aelfrida Tillyard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of a Mystic In the Lent terms of the years 1915, 1916, and 1917, I delivered courses of Lectures at Cambridge, on "Spiritual Exercises and their Psychological Results"; "The Development of the Religious Consciousness in East and West"; and "The Practice of Mysticism." These lectures, which were given in the Psychological lecture room, were purely academic. They brought me into contact, however, with a number of people whose interest in mysticism, and in the spiritual experience and methods of meditation of saints of all religions, was not merely that of the scholar. I found myself being constantly asked for advice by men and women who wished to become pilgrims on the mystic way, and who felt the need for intense religious experience, without having any opportunity for practising the austerities of the contemplative life. I myself, as I had better confess quite frankly, am a mystic, in so far as I find the world of spiritual experience more real than the material world, and look on our union with God as the aim of humanity. And though I agree with Dr. Rendel Harris that, "those people who talk of undertaking the guidance of souls are both dangerous and impertinent," I could not avoid giving these seekers after truth such help as was within my power, which was little enough, of course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystic Key to Spiritual Illumination and Occult Mastery It is the secret of a stupendous truth, a truth so simple that it may be apprehended by the humblest mind, yet so mighty, when apprehended and applied, as to bring complete Spiritual emancipation and enlightenment to the most benighted and depraved soul, and health and vigor to the most weakened and diseased body. This truth gleams forth in all inspired teaching, but was first brought to its full revelation, in the perfect demonstration of practical experience in the life and work of the Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystic Way: A Psychological Study in Christian Origins We are still too often told that Christian mysticism is no integral part of Christianity. Sometimes, even, that it represents an opposition to the primitive Christian ideal. Sometimes we are asked to believe that it origin ated from Neoplatonic influence; that Pagan blood runs in its veins, and that its genealogy goes back to Plotinus. Far from this being the case, all the doctrines and all the experiences characteristic of genuine Christian mysticism can be found in the New Testament; and I believe that its emergence as a definite type of spiritual life coincides with the emergence of Christianity itself, in the person of its Founder. Book Meditations on the Tarot

Download or read book Meditations on the Tarot written by and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in a fully corrected edition, one of the true spiritual classics of the twentieth century. Published for the first time with an index and Cardinal Hans Urs von Balthasar’s afterword, this new English publication of Meditations on the Tarot is the landmark edition of one of the most important works of esoteric Christianity. Written anonymously and published posthumously, as was the author’s wish, the intention of this work is for the reader to find a relationship with the author in the spiritual dimensions of existence. The author wanted not to be thought of as a personality who lived from 1900 to 1973, but as a friend who is communicating with us from beyond the boundaries of ordinary life. Using the 22 major arcana of the tarot deck as a means to explore some of humanity’s most penetrating spiritual questions, Meditations on the Tarot has attracted an unprecedented range of praise from across the spiritual spectrum.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zelma, the Mystic: Or, White Magic, Versus Black When occult truths shall be more commonly ap plied to public affairs, the pathways of both legislator and teacher will be less devious and thorny. I have aimed to make this plain, as well as to impress upon the inventive mind the necessity of cultivating the inner or spiritual insight, as a means to success. I have also desired to have the book mechanically and artistically correct. The full-page illustrations have been procured at a large expense, and I trust they will be looked upon with pleasure and profit. Too much credit cannot be given the artists who have joined their interests with mine to make the venture a success. In this connection I have deemed it wise to employ only the best of talent, even though the number of plates should be less. With these few explanatory words, I herewith sub mit my offering to a critical public for better or worse, and cheerfully abide the verdict that shall follow. A. M. T. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hindu Mysticism I have defined mysticism as a belief or a view, but in reality it means much more than that. In the life of the true mystics, beliefs exert a great formative in fluence. They are no mere intellectual registrations of opinions or temporary experiences, but represent the dynamic, the dominant tone of their personality as it develops and perfects itself. Mysticism is not an intellectual theory; it is fundamentally an active, for mative, creative, elevating and ennobling principle of life. I have not here taken note of poems or thoughts involving merely mystical beliefs but have touched only upon those which are the outward expressions of a real inner flowering of life in the persons of those who have tried to live a saintly life of mysticism. (mysticism means a spiritual grasp of the aims and problems of life in a 'much more real and ultimate manner than is possible to mere reason.>a developing life of mysticism means a gradual ascent in the scale About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Spiritual Consciousness: Mysticism - The Nature and Development of Man's Spiritual Consciousness is a seminal book about Christian mysticism written by one of the most widely read authors on the subject, the ever popular Evelyn Underhill continues her trend of truly life-altering writings. Underhill has divided Mysticism into two parts. The first section of the book, "The Mystic Fact," serves as an introduction to Christian mysticism, tracing the history and nature of mysticism from theological and philosophical perspectives. A chapter is also included on mysticism and magic, a relationship that perhaps forms the most controversial aspect of mysticism. The second part of Underhill's book (dubbed "The Mystic Way") is the author's study of the process of mystical growth. This portion of the book can almost be read as a "how-to." For those seeking spiritual growth through Christian mysticism, it is this portion of the book that will be most valuable and potentially life altering. Mysticism remains one of the most heralded texts examining Christian mysticism. The reason for this is simple: Underhill's prose and clarity of voice are remarkable. The text is simple yet both illuminating and inspiring. Both the novice and the experienced follower will find tremendous value in this book. Spiritual Consciousness: Mysticism - The Nature and Development of Man's Spiritual Consciousness is perhaps the most well known book on the subject matter, and with good reason. It is a true accomplishment, and one that deserves to be read by anybody with a passing interest in mysticism. Underhill's book is highly recommended. Book The Mystic Thesaurus Or Initiation in the Theoretical and Practical Secrets of Astral Truth and Occult Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mystic Thesaurus Or Initiation in the Theoretical and Practical Secrets of Astral Truth and Occult Art Classic Reprint written by Willis F. Whitehead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystic Thesaurus, or Initiation in the Theoretical and Practical Secrets of Astral Truth and Occult Art The following pages contain the original chapter on the Magic Mirror, first published in December, 1897, by myself, in connection with a partner, in a work entitled Agrippa's Natural Magic - a reprint of the first of the three books of Occult Philosophy of Henry Cor helius Agrippa - which I edited and set up in type during the last quarter of that year. In January, 1899, the plates and copyright were purchased by Ernest Loomis, of Chicago, and I joined in the transfer of the copyright with the express understanding (in view of its moral ownership by the Brotherhood of Magic, and further known as the Royal Adepts of Mysticism) that Ishould continue in my right to publish the original chapter entitled, The Magic Mirror - A Message to Mystics, by Direction of the Brotherhood of Magic, containing full instructions on its make and use, the same embracing a prefatory page, made up of a, verse headed A Message from the Stars, under a zenith of light and dark stars. This ornamental constellation is symbolic of the Astral Brotherhood of Magic, and contains the hidden things mentioned in my preface to the book. Testimonial proof of the astral origin of the Mirror chapter is found in the wonderful story of these stars and the hidden things therein which we explain. The Message has been carefully revised and amended, and constitutes. With the exposition of its preliminary star constellation, an initiation in the practical secrets of the realm of mystic truth and art. The Symbol of the Cross - partly an exposition of the dedicatory page of Natural Magic (by courtesy of Mr. Loomis) - is an interesting study in symbolism.
