Book The True Church and the Poor

Download or read book The True Church and the Poor written by Jon Sobrino and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-10-29 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of Jon Sobrino's first book, 'Christology at the Crossroads', the 'Church Times' wrote: It is radical without being reductionist. It is relentless in its refusal to let us avoid the challenge of Jesus by sliding into theological or cultic abstractions. It will stimulate, illuminate, and infuriate those whose minds are jaded by the current state of British theology. And, like all great theology, it will bring you uncomfortably close to the living Jesus. This second book, also written out of the hell of El Salvador, is if anything even more powerful and uncomfortable. Dedicated To all men and women of El Salvador who have given their lives for the kingdom of God, it took shape while Bishop Romero, his priests, Christian peasant leaders, and catechists lived and died. Doing theology in this situation requires that theology not only follows a specific method but that it also has a specific character. Theology in this situation becomes responsible. Theologians do not arbitrarily decide to study this or that theme; the theme is forced upon them by reality. Theology becomes practical because its motivating concern is not pure thought nor even pure truth but rather the building of the kingdom of God and of a church that will be at the service of this kingdom. Theology becomes evangelical in the true sense of that word: it is done with pleasure in the Good News and with joy that there is salvation for the poor. Finally, theology becomes a response of gratitude because its starting point is the primordial Christian experience that 'something has been given to us'. What has been given to us is the mystery of God present in Jesus and in a church that is poor and is of the poor.

Book excerpt: The poor will always be with you, Jesus said – but that doesn’t mean Christians have ever figured out how to be with the poor. Pope Francis has emphasized a vision of a “Church that is poor and for the poor.” But growing economic inequality continues to spread across the globe. This book takes a fresh look at the role of churches, and individual Christians, in relating to poverty and the poor among them. A strong focus is placed on the biblical and theological roots of the Church’s commitment to care for the poor. At times praised as a virtue and blessed as a condition, poverty easily confuses us, and we are often left doing little to nothing to make a difference with and for the poor. As a social evil and a burden, poverty has elicited many kinds of reactions among the followers of Christ. It is time for Christians to figure out what to do about it. Contributors include Pope Francis, Pheme Perkins, Sandra M. Schneider, and Thomas Massaro SJ. “This book provides a wonderful, provocative theological framework for those of us who minister among our most vulnerable sisters and brothers. For anyone who regularly looks into the eyes of suffering, this book offers context, hope, and inspiration.” —DONNA MARKHAM, OP, President and CEO, Catholic Charities USA “The authors challenge us to see, hear, and think differently about the meanings of poverty, and to love passionately those whom Jesus loved—the poor.” —PROFESSOR M. SHAWN COPELAND, author of Enfleshing Freedom: Body, Race, and Being “As a good Franciscan, Ken Himes knows poverty from the inside and has taught well his student Conor Kelly. Here they draw together rich resources that call all of us to the poverty we need, and to resist needless poverty. This book is an ideal resource for conversation.” —THOMAS H. GROOME, author of What Makes Us Catholic, Sharing Faith, and many other books Published in cooperation with the Church in the 21st Century Center, Boston College

Book Loving the Poor Saving the Rich

Download or read book Loving the Poor Saving the Rich written by Helen Rhee and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of wealth and poverty and its relationship to Christian faith is as ancient as the New Testament and reaches even further back to the Hebrew Scriptures. From the beginnings of the Christian movement, the issue of how to deal with riches and care for the poor formed an important aspect of Christian discipleship. This careful study shows how early Christians adopted, appropriated, and transformed the Jewish and Greco-Roman moral teachings and practices of giving and patronage. As Helen Rhee illuminates the early Christian understanding of wealth and poverty, she shows how it impacted the formation of Christian identity. She also demonstrates the ongoing relevance of early Christian thought and practice for the contemporary church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strong theological call for ending the abomination of systemic poverty Jesus's words "the poor you will always have with you" (Matthew 26:11) are regularly used to suggest that ending poverty is impossible, that poverty is a result of moral failures, and that the poor themselves have no role in changing their situation. In this book Liz Theoharis examines both the biblical text and the lived reality of the poor to show how that passage is taken out of context, distorted, and politicized to justify theories about the inevitability of inequality. Theoharis reinterprets "the poor you will always have with you" to show that it is actually one of the strongest biblical mandates to end poverty. She documents stories of poor people themselves organizing to improve their lot and illuminates the implications for the church. Poverty is not inevitable, Theoharis argues. It is a systemic sin, and all Christians have a responsibility to partner with the poor to end poverty once and for all.

Following the pattern of his successful Advent Conspiracy, Chris Seay invites readers on a journey of self-examination, discipline, and renewed focus on Jesus that will change their lives forever. He challenges readers to eat like the poor for forty days in solidarity with a much-neglected group of people, and to donate the money they save on groceries to a charity or project that serves the poor in concrete ways. But he doesn't expect them to go it alone. A Place at the Table includes a short chapter for each of those forty days with Scripture, reflections, prayers, encouragement, and tips for engaging the whole family in the process. The six-session DVD, shot in such locations as the Holy Land, Haiti, and Ecuador, will help small groups and entire churches go on a passionate journey of radical faith, personal action, solidarity with the poor, and extravagant grace.

Book excerpt: We’re called to be like Jesus, not like each other – so why are most Western churches predominantly middle class? Could it be that we’re reaching out to people in poverty, but struggling to connect them into church life? Natalie Williams and Paul Brown know all too well that those saved from working-class backgrounds often find themselves discipled effectively – but into middle classism rather than authentic Christianity. Drawing on their own experiences, and mixing theory with practical application, they explore the invisible divides that prevent churches from becoming places of true inclusion and keep poor and working-class people on the edges of faith. Packed full of surprising insights and helpful advice, Invisible Divides will change the way you see church life. Essential reading for anyone concerned with the class divide within the church, it will challenge you to look at the ways in which we inadvertently exclude, alienate and offend people who aren’t like us, and equip you to start working towards making church a more open, inclusive space for everyone. Jesus calls for us all to follow him, no matter our background; together, we can break down the invisible divides between us so that people from all walks of life can come to know Christ and find family in our churches.

But while much progress has been made, many well-intentioned efforts have led Christians to actions that are not only ineffective, but leave the most vulnerable in a worse situation than before. Is there a better answer? With contributions from fifteen leading Christian economists, theologians, historians, and practitioners, it presents the case for why a multi-faceted approach is needed, and why a renewed focus on markets and trade are the world’s best hope for alleviating poverty and serving those in financial need.

While it may sound like an oxymoron, an illuminating and insightful new book proves that anyone really can find wealth in culture of poverty. ‘The Wealth of Poverty: Capitalizing the Opportunities of Poverty for the Kingdom of God’ is the work of Rev Dr. Tina Carter and Rev Dr. Mindy Johnson-Hicks – proving their point with clarity and fact. A unique collaboration, ‘The Wealth of Poverty’ uncovers the surprising wealth that can be found in poverty. By enlightening their readers and changing their mind-sets, the authors inspire everyone to develop strong relationships with those from different economic background so all may prosper collectively. Reviews for the book have been impressive. Rev. Adam Hamilton, Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS, comments, “Often the church’s efforts addressing poverty involve performing acts of service for or to the poor. These acts are sometimes motivated more by one’s own needs or self-interest than by a genuine concern for the poor. Tina Carter and Mindy Johnson-Hicks invite readers to take a different approach. In The Wealth of Poverty they invite readers to develop mutual relationships with persons of different economic groups and to foster a deeper understanding of the culture of poverty and the surprising wealth found there."
