This book was released on 2014-04-06 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Zimbabwe's elections in July of 2013, another Robert Mugabe victory, achieved through cheating, strong-arming, and harassment, Mugabe has unfettered access to all government posts and all state resources. It is likely that the graft and corruption, which have characterized his regime, will continue. Chromium, platinum, and diamonds have enriched Zimbabwe's leaders, but not its people. Mugabe, the liberation leader, who has led his country since 1980, has always resented that the U.S. Government did not support his war against the previous white minority government. Despite our efforts to establish a mutually beneficial relationship with Mugabe's government over the past couple of decades, his regime has spurned our hand of friendship, flouted international law, and convention. Facing international appeals for an end to sanctions on Zimbabwe, and threats from the Mugabe government of economic retaliation, the U.S. must devise a policy that safeguards American interests while maintaining our support for democracy, human rights, good governance, and economic development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights diplomacy provides an up to date and accessible overview of the field, and serves as a practical guide to those seeking to engage in human rights work. Kelly-Kate Pease uses clear language and practical examples to teach readers the difficult skill of systematically looking at human rights and humanitarian negotiations. After a brief overview of human rights and what is meant by diplomacy, Pease argues that while human rights are internationally recognized, important disagreements exist on definition, priority and implementation. With the help of Human rights diplomacy, these differences can be bridged, and a new generation of human rights professionals will build better relationships.

Book Crisis and Confrontation

Download or read book Crisis and Confrontation written by Morris H. Morley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1988 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors examine the Reagan administration's foreign policy in light of growing economic and political conflicts among the United States, Western Europe, and Japan, and the surge of political and social struggles in the Third World. Included are detailed analyses of America's relations with the Soviet Union, Western Europe, southern Africa, Central America and the Caribbean, the Philippines, Northeast Asia, and the Middle East, in addition to a comprehensive study of Reagan's foreign-aid policy. The chapters, which assess the intersection between policy pronouncements and Reagan's capacity to realize stated goals, identify constraints that limit and sometimes force modification in the style, if not the substance, of White House foreign policy.

Book Zimbabwe The Link Between Politics and the Economy

Download or read book Zimbabwe The Link Between Politics and the Economy written by Godfrey Kanyenze and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this accessible and authoritative book, Godfrey Kanyenze provides a comprehensive and far-reaching analysis of the socio-economic development in Zimbabwe in light of the expanding authoritarianism and the ongoing destruction of democratic institutions during the four decades after independence. Kanyenze describes the various phases of the socio-economic development starting with 1980 when the people of Zimbabwe saw their hard-won independence and new democracy as a promise for a "better life for all". Kanyenze highlights how by dismantling all barriers of economic and legal restraint, and that despite being necessary, The land reform programme put the political and financial interests of the elite before those of the people which continues to this day. Kanyenze reveals the governmental attacks on civil society, and notes how economic policy was not even part of an "authoritarian bargain", an implicit arrangement between ruling elites and citizens whereby citizens relinquish political freedom in exchange for public goods. And he concludes this analysis with a current update of Zimbabwe today, where citizens have nothing -neither political freedom nor public goods. This impressive and gripping account of an authoritarian capitalist system and a country in decline is a must-read for students, researchers, policymakers and those who want to better understand how politics and the economy, interests, conflicts, and power work together.
