Book excerpt: Since her first appearance on screen in Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews has played a series of memorable roles that have endeared her to generations. But she has never told the story of her life before fame. Until now. In Home: A Memoir of My Early Years, Julie takes her readers on a warm, moving, and often humorous journey from a difficult upbringing in war-torn Britain to the brink of international stardom in America. Her memoir begins in 1935, when Julie was born to an aspiring vaudevillian mother and a teacher father, and takes readers to 1962, when Walt Disney himself saw her on Broadway and cast her as the world's most famous nanny. Along the way, she weathered the London Blitz of World War II; her parents' painful divorce; her mother's turbulent second marriage to Canadian tenor Ted Andrews, and a childhood spent on radio, in music halls, and giving concert performances all over England. Julie's professional career began at the age of twelve, and in 1948 she became the youngest solo performer ever to participate in a Royal Command Performance before the Queen. When only eighteen, she left home for the United States to make her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend, and thus began her meteoric rise to stardom. Home is filled with numerous anecdotes, including stories of performing in My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison on Broadway and in the West End, and in Camelot with Richard Burton on Broadway; her first marriage to famed set and costume designer Tony Walton, culminating with the birth of their daughter, Emma; and the call from Hollywood and what lay beyond. Julie Andrews' career has flourished over seven decades. From her legendary Broadway performances, to her roles in such iconic films as The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Hawaii, 10, and The Princess Diaries, to her award-winning television appearances, multiple album releases, concert tours, international humanitarian work, best-selling children's books, and championship of literacy, Julie's influence spans generations. Today, she lives with her husband of thirty-eight years, the acclaimed writer/director Blake Edwards; they have five children and seven grandchildren. Featuring over fifty personal photos, many never before seen, this is the personal memoir Julie Andrews' audiences have been waiting for.

Book excerpt: Melvina Brown has become an expert at holding it together. On a horse farm in California, she’s raising two boys—smart, tough Archie and sweet Theo, who dreams of playing baseball, and doesn’t let the fact that he has only one arm stop him. A perfect PTA mom Melvina is not—her boots are too dirty for that. She’s just taking it one day at a time, with a little help from her boyfriend, her twin sister and her dad. And while her heart is still heavy sometimes with the loss of her beloved brother Henry, who long ago went mysteriously missing, Mel keeps his spirit nearby, making him a larger-than-life hero in his nephews’ imaginations, creating tales of his epic adventures for their bedtime stories. It’s a life that works pretty well—until her estranged husband shows up at their door, wanting to make up for lost time with his sons. A family that plays ball in a graveyard and stays up late to watch rare flowers bloom will never be ordinary. But together, the tempestuous, mismatched Browns stumble through anger and confusion to laughter and understanding, discovering that sometimes love really is the only answer. "A charming family of misfits struggling to make sense of what life's dealt them. Sit back—and be sure to grab a box of tissues—and enjoy."—Jo-Ann Mapson, author of Hank & Chloe and the Bad Girl Creek series "A writer with a poet's eye, a philosopher's mind, and a mother's heart."—Jo-Ann Mapson

Book The Chick Bowdrie Short Stories Bundle

Download or read book The Chick Bowdrie Short Stories Bundle written by Louis L'Amour and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawman, manhunter, peacemaker—it takes a hard breed of man to survive on the frontier, but Chick Bowdrie stands head and shoulders above the rest. This outlaw turned Texas Ranger was one of the favorite protagonists of master storyteller Louis L’Amour, appearing in a total of nineteen short stories bursting with unforgettable heroics and harrowing action. They’re all here in this eBook bundle, together forming an epic portrait of a man standing at the crossroads between good and evil: McNelly Knows a Ranger • A Job for a Ranger • Bowdrie Rides a Coyote Trail • A Trail to the West • The Outlaws of Poplar Creek • Bowdrie Follows a Cold Trail • More Brains Than Bullets • The Road to Casa Piedras • Bowdrie Passes Through • Where Buzzards Fly • South of Deadwood • Too Tough to Brand • Case Closed—No Prisoners • The Killer from the Pecos • A Ranger Rides to Town • Rain on the Mountain Fork • Down Sonora Way • Strange Pursuit • Strawhouse Trail The name is Bowdrie. It was a name that caused the most hardened gunmen to break out in a cold sweat. Chick Bowdrie. He could have ridden the outlaw trail, but the Texas Rangers recruited him because they didn’t want to have to fight against him. Pursuing the most wanted men in the Southwest, he knew all too well the dusty trails, the bitter cattle feuds, the desperate killers, and the quiet, weather-beaten, wind-blasted towns that could explode into action with the wrong word. He had sworn to carry out the law, but there were times when he had to apply justice with his fists and his guns. They called in the Rangers to handle the tough ones, and there was never a Ranger tougher or smarter than Bowdrie.
