It is of no small significance that the missionaries of the second half of the twentieth century prepared the way for God’s people of the twenty-first century. Post-World War II purveyors of the gospel had incredible opportunities and open doors, and they used them for the glory of God. Through the retelling of personal stories of the missionaries in New Guinea, Brazil, Mexico, and more, lesser known details of missionary activity in the 1950s and 1960s are revealed, including the courage, personal calling, sacrifice, and excellence of these brave Christians. Their incredible journeys prove that their legacy is worth celebrating and remembering. It is of utmost importance for future generations to understand and appreciate the previous generation’s struggles and triumphs. The Greatest Missionary Generation will mobilize hearts to love and serve the Lord. Book excerpt: John and Betty Stam were a young Christian couple working for The Lord in China. The year was 1934, a turbulent time in history and the Stams were right in the thick of it. Early one morning the call went out that communist soldiers were approaching their town. Betty was nursing their young baby girl when John decided that perhaps now was the time to leave ... as they began to make their plans the rebel soldiers broke through the walls and soon the sound of rifle buts was being heard as they knocked against the door. Calm in the face of trouble the Stams trusted in their loving heavenly father - and with that faith faced their future whatever that would be. This is a story of tragedy as well as trust. It is heartbreaking but full of strength. It is the story of two young martyrs who believed in God and in his call on their lives. The painful story of John and Betty Stam retains a spark of hope through the power of their testimony and the life of their infant daughter who survived them.

Graham Scroggie (1877-1958): The Unusual Keswick Speaker God never repeats Himself in human experience, and it is refreshing to mark these saints as they ventured their all upon God and left us individual histories which enrich the spiritual kingdom by the delightful variety we discover in all God's "other" creations. We do not submit these sketches that they should be imitated in detail as to their search for God, or as to their evidence of that attainment. We pray rather that their faith and courage, in proving and knowing God, might encourage us to realize there is no limit, except in ourselves, to what we might discover of His kingdom while here in "time." Our situation today is much like that which existed in the time of the Judges: "Another generation grew up after them, who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel." (Judges 2:10). Such ignorance in those days issued in God's people doing evil and turning to false religion. This book describes giants of faith---people who did exploits because "they knew their God." Such devotion as we read about shames our shallowness and our failure to make a vacuum for God in the busy materialistic scramble for higher living standards. We have expensive homes and luxury cars but know little of the vast riches and resources available to one who takes time to know and understand. Our ideals are to low, and our zeal so lukewarm, and our stocks of grace so pitifully small that we need to remember great saints who all remind us, we too can make our lives sublime, and departing leave behind us, footprints in the sands of time, as Longfellow wrote: Footprints that perhaps another Sailing o'er life's solemn mane, Some forlorn and shipwrecked brother Reading may take heart again.---from the foreword.

Book excerpt: Their paths to God’s purpose led them together. Many know the heroic story of Jim Elliot’s violent death in 1956, killed along with four other missionaries by a primitive Ecuadorian tribe they were seeking to reach. Many also know the prolific legacy of Elisabeth Elliot, whose inspiring influence on generations of believers through print, broadcast, and personal testimony continues to resonate, even after her own death in 2015. What many don’t know is the remarkable story of how these two stalwart personalities—single-mindedly devoted to pursuing God’s will for their young lives, certain their future callings would require them to sacrifice forever the blessings of marriage—found their hearts intertwined. Their paths to God’s purpose led them together. Now, for the first time, their only child—daughter Valerie Elliot Shepard—unseals never-before-published letters and private journals that capture in first-person intimacy the attraction, struggle, drama, and devotion that became a most unlikely love story. Riveting for old and young alike, this moving account of their personal lives shines as a gold mine of lived-out truth, hard-fought purity, and an insider’s view on two beloved Christian figures.
