Book Bohemia in America 1858 1920

Download or read book Bohemia in America 1858 1920 written by Joanna Levin and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bohemia in America, 1858–1920 explores the construction and emergence of "Bohemia" in American literature and culture. Simultaneously a literary trope, a cultural nexus, and a socio-economic landscape, la vie bohème traveled to the United States from the Parisian Latin Quarter in the 1850s. At first the province of small artistic coteries, Bohemia soon inspired a popular vogue, embodied in restaurants, clubs, neighborhoods, novels, poems, and dramatic performances across the country. Levin's study follows la vie bohème from its earliest expressions in the U.S. until its explosion in Greenwich Village in the 1910s. Although Bohemia was everywhere in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American culture, it has received relatively little scholarly attention. Bohemia in America, 1858–1920 fills this critical void, discovering and exploring the many textual and geographic spaces in which Bohemia was conjured. Joanna Levin not only provides access to a neglected cultural phenomenon but also to a new and compelling way of charting the development of American literature and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bohemia and Other Poems Bohemia And Other Poems. Bohemia. Where shall I go to find real, true Bohemia? Seek it not here, 'mid the glitter of gold; Wealth does not grow on the shores of Bohemia; Fame only lingers its realms to unfold. Who shall I find in the shades of Bohemia? Beings untinged by society's stern laws; Mortals whose aim is unfettered, pure nature, Heedless alike of earth's blame or applause. What shall I see in the land of Bohemia? Noble souls striving for freedom of thought; Wonderful units, with brains ever active, Brimful of hope, yet with cares ever fraught. Who are the natures who haunt true Bohemia? Those whose high souls from society rebel; Those whom the earth-hovering, narrow, vain natures Cannot control, yet they cannot dispel. Book On Bohemia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cesar Grana
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-09-29
  • ISBN : 1351502395
  • Pages : 832 pages

Download or read book On Bohemia written by Cesar Grana and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bohemia has been variously defined as a mythical country, a state of mind, a tavern by the wayside on the road of life. The editors of this volume prefer a leaner definition: an attitude of dissent from the prevailing values of middle-class society, one dependent on the existence of caf life. But whatever definition is preferred, this rich and long overdue collective portrait of Bohemian life in a large variety of settings is certain to engage and even entrance readers of all types: from the student of culture to social researchers and literary figures n search of their ancestral roots. The work is international in scope and social scientific in conception. But because of the special nature of the Bohemian fascination, the volume is also graced by an unusually larger number of exquisite literary essays. Hence, one will find in this anthology writings by Malcolm Cowely, Norman Podhoretz, Norman Mailer, Theophile Gautier, Honore de Balzac, Mary Austin, Stefan Zweig, Nadine Gordimer, and Ernest Hemingway. Social scientists are well represented by Cesar Grana, Ephraim Mizruchi, W.I. Thomas, Florian Znaniecki, Harvey Zorbaugh, John R. Howard, and G. William Domhoff, among others. The volume is sectioned into major themes in the history of Bohemia: social and literary origins, testimony by the participants, analysis by critics of and crusaders for the bohemian life, the ideological characteristics of the bohemians, and the long term prospect as well as retrospect for bohemenianism as a system, culture and ideology. The editors have provided a framework for examining some fundamental themes in social structure and social deviance: What are the levels of toleration within a society? Do artists deserve and receive special treatment by the powers that be? And what are the connections between bohemian life-styles and political protest movements? This is an anthology and not a treatise, so the reader is free to pick and choose not only wha

Book The Legend of Bohemian Glass

Download or read book The Legend of Bohemian Glass written by Antonín Langhamer and published by Tigris. This book was released on 2003 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Antonín Langhamer brings to life the whole depth and breadth of Czech glass achievement. The book covers its entire history, not only artistic, but technical, economic and commercial. His exhaustive glossary at the back is more than just a place to look up terms, but an illuminating narrative on every aspect of glass, from ancient times to the present. The work is illustrated with lush photographs created by outstanding photographers who specialise in capturing the breathtaking beauty unique to glass. In Langhamer's narratives on early times, readers will find fascinating parallels with the behaviour of modern people, nations and industries. Despite its early origins, Bohemian glass took considerable time to reach prominence. Beginning in obscurity, Bohemian glassmakers produced wares that for a long time were good, but not exceptional. Bohemia's history has been turbulent, and readers can draw inspiration from the ingenuity and persistence of those glassmakers who succeeded against overwhelming odds. While World War II was raging, in the midst of shortages of every imaginable material and fuel, a Czech entrepreneur built himself a little glass furnace. Raw materials were hard to come by, so he made do by re-melting crushed bottles. This book is full of many stories of human valour and weakness, the development of technical and artistic marvels, legal harassment, sex discrimination, industrial espionage, and the triumph of ambition over adversity. But it also tells of ordinary people doing their ordinary work throughout their ordinary lives, and thereby achieving something magnificent. Glass affects everyone's life, and everyone's life, in some small way, affects the evolution of glass. Readers will never see glass in the same way again.
