Book The Trip Back Down

Download or read book The Trip Back Down written by John Bishop and published by Samuel French, Inc.. This book was released on 1975 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bobby Horvath, stock car racer, had visions of being the greatest, but he has returned home knowing he isn't and never will be. Racing brought him excitement and glamour escape from the drudgery of a factory job. The play records his encounters with his father, the wife and daughter he deserted and also other friends and relatives. The action moves in and out of the past and the heart of the play is his struggle to come to terms with himself. But when past and present collide, the results are unexpected. The play is also about a blue-collar mid-American town with its deadening routine of life. Boredom and depression begins to enfold Bobby with its futility and sterility. He returns to racing, even if it means he will be a loser."--Publisher's description.

Book Discover Dalat Local Travel Guide to Da Lat Vietnam

Download or read book Discover Dalat Local Travel Guide to Da Lat Vietnam written by Elly Thuy Nguyen and published by Elly Thuy Nguyen. This book was released on 2024-07-03 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dalat is mountain sunrises, chicken soup, paddle boats, and lounge singers. It's where Vietnamese people go to cool off in the summer, or see "European winter" for Christmas. Downtown is a cascade of steep staircases for pedestrians, or infuriatingly narrow one-way streets for the motorized. Even in the hottest global-warmed summer, you don't need A/C here. Dalat is Vietnam like you've never seen it. As heavily touristed as Dalat is, tourists miss the best stuff every time. I got tired of wanting to slap my forehead seeing foreign and Vietnamese visitors alike getting the blandest, most boring version of Dalat — especially on those awful guided tours around tourist traps and gift shops. I've lectured my Vietnamese friends about all the good things they miss in Dalat. That advice -- always with map links and QR codes -- fills this book. This is Dalat the way I know it and love it. We'll eat UFO cakes, conquer mountains, and find how to hide from the screaming tourist groups. Come with me. Let's discover Dalat.

Book Offstage Observations

Download or read book Offstage Observations written by Steven Suskin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broadway, once upon a time. A place where people buy tickets at the box office, with cash; where patrons dress for theatre, with no sneakers, no water bottles, and no backpacks; and the only text messages are the ones put there by the playwright. A place where iconic legends of stage and screen can be found in plain view, smiling politely or egotistically preening. Where three dollars will get you a balcony seat at the biggest hit—or the lowliest flop—in town. And a place where an innocent teenager from the suburbs can buy a ticket, slip through the stage door, and wander o'er the threshold into the magical world backstage. Steven Suskin introduces Broadway, once upon a time, in Offstage Observations: Tales of the Not-So-Legitimate Theatre. The drama critic and noted chronicler of Broadway takes the reader through a decade's worth of adventures, working his way from a menial pencil sharpener for producer David Merrick toward a career as a full-fledged manager, producer, and drama critic. The book follows the author's progress from the wintry night after his sixteenth birthday, when he unexpectedly finds himself alone on the empty stage of a Broadway theatre, peering out at the silent, empty auditorium lit only by a solitary ghost light to the matinee eight summers later when he finds himself accidentally and uncomfortably acting in a Broadway musical, bombarded by roars of laughter from a houseful of playgoers. A keen observer of the impertinent with an ear for amusing anecdotes, whimsical curiosities, and exaggerated tales of life upon the wicked stage, Suskin draws a portrait of a not-so-long-ago theatre world that has all but vanished.

Book Island Music The History Of AIR Studios Montserrat

Download or read book Island Music The History Of AIR Studios Montserrat written by Brian Sallerson and published by Brian Sallerson. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 10 years, AIR Studios Montserrat produced many of the biggest hits that defined the 1980s. On September 17, 1989, it all ended in a flash of wind, rain, and fury. The AIR Studios Montserrat recording studio, owned by Sir George Martin (often referred to as the "Fifth Beatle"), operated from 1979 to 1989 on the small picturesque Caribbean island of Montserrat. Playing host to some of the biggest recording artists of the 1980s, this studio produced many of the hit songs integral to the musical fabric of that decade. The isolated tropical environment of the studio's location on Montserrat created a unique creative environment not found anywhere else in the world. To many of those who worked and recorded there, it is regarded as a very "special place", an experience that left an indelible imprint on their lives. Sadly, the storied history of AIR Studios Montserrat was suddenly cut short when the destructive forces of Hurricane Hugo battered the island in September of 1989. Over 30 years later, the remains of the studio lay in ruin as the island reclaims the land that was once creative fertile ground for artists such as The Police, Dire Straits, Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, and Elton John. The prolific musical output from AIR Studios Montserrat cemented its place in music history and world culture. The studio's sudden demise at the hands of Hurricane Hugo creates an emotional ending to an important artistic enclave that touched so many people around the world. The story of its creation, operation, and demise needs to be told so it can be appreciated by the millions of music fans whose lives were defined by the music recorded there.
