Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masaccio's "Trinity" examines one of the most influential paintings of the Italian Renaissance. Renowned for the grandeur of its characterizations and for the perspectival illusion of its architectural setting, the fresco was famous from the time it was painted in the 1420s, and remembered despite its having been hidden from view for nearly two centuries. This volume considers the "Trinity" in its historical and spiritual contexts, and describes the significance of Masaccio's innovative depictions of time and space.

  • Pages : 140 pages

Download or read book The Trinity written by Douglas Hall and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a careful historical analysis of the methods and contents of the 'De Trinitate' of Boethius and the 'Expositio' of Aquinas. It is also the first comprehensive philosophical and theological analysis of Aquinas' 'Expositio' to be based on the modern critical edition of the Latin text and in the light of mid- and late-20th-century advances in thomistic scholarship. In this study the author locates the reconstruction of Boethius undertaken by Aquinas, and radically documents the dialectical themes of 'agnosia' and 'remotion' in this work. Such documentation aims to provide a higher level of understanding of the structure of the 'cu Expositio' than is possible with mid-20th-century approaches which have emphasized participationist, analogical and transcendental thematics.

Book Heresy Culture and Religion in Early Modern Italy

Download or read book Heresy Culture and Religion in Early Modern Italy written by Ronald K. Delph and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2006-08-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading scholars from Italy and the United States offer a fresh and nuanced image of the religious reform movements on the Italian peninsula in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. United in their conviction that religious ideas can only be fully understood in relation to the particular social, cultural, and political contexts in which they develop, these scholars explore a wide range of protagonists from popes, bishops, and inquisitors to humanists and merchants, to artists, jewelers, and nuns. What emerges is a story of negotiations, mediations, compromises, and of shifting boundaries between heresy and orthodoxy. This book is essential reading for all students of the history of Christianity in early modern Europe.

Book The Social World of the Abbey of Cava C 1020 1300

Download or read book The Social World of the Abbey of Cava C 1020 1300 written by G. A. Loud and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2021 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering, comprehensive investigation into a major Italian monastery. The Benedictine abbey of Holy Trinity, Cava, has had a continuous existence since its foundation almost exactly a thousand years ago. From its modest beginnings, it developed during the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries into one of the wealthiest and most influential monasteries in southern Italy. This path-breaking study, based on many years research into the, largely unpublished, charters of Cava, begins by examining the growth of the abbey's congregation and property, and its struggle subsequently to defend its interests during the troubled thirteenth century. But, in addition, it uses the extensive evidence available to study its benefactors and dependents, administration and economy, and through this material to analyse the social and economic structures of the principality of Salerno. There is also a re-evaluation of the problem of forgery, practised on a large scale at Cava during the thirteenth century, a factor which has complicated and discouraged previous study of this important institution. A major advance both in the study of the south Italian Church and of the medieval Mezzogiorno during the central Middle Ages, the volume presents a vivid and detailed picture of local society and its workings, and of the families and individuals who had dealings with the abbey.

Book The Teutonic Order in Italy 1190 1525

Download or read book The Teutonic Order in Italy 1190 1525 written by Kristjan Toomaspoeg and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1190 and 1525, the Teutonic Order (the third major military religious order after the Temple and the Hospital) maintained extensive possessions in Italy. This volume examines the history of the Order’s Italian branch, arguing that it served as an intermediary between East and West, as well as North and South. It reflects on the reasons for the Teutonic Order’s success and the persistence of its settlement, particularly its ability to adapt to various and changing political and economic contexts, and its talent in garnering the support of the local population. Not only focusing on political, diplomatic, economic and religious history but also considering the history of art and architecture, spirituality, prosopography and everyday life, this book portrays the Teutonic Order in Italy as an example of medieval coexistence, collaboration and crossing borders. This book will a useful study for scholars interested in Medieval Italy, cross-cultural history and the military religious orders of the medieval period.
