Book The Gladstone Diaries Volume 10 January 1881 June 1883

Download or read book The Gladstone Diaries Volume 10 January 1881 June 1883 written by W. E. Gladstone and published by . This book was released on 1990-03 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tenth and eleventh volumes of Gladstone's diaries (1881-1886) cover the years of his dramatic second and third administrations. The second administration confronted a series of crises: the Land League Campaign and the Phoenix Park murders, Majuba Hill and South Africa, Gordon and the Sudan, and the obstruction of franchise reform by the House of Lords. The administration met these with determined assertion of administrative and legislative reforms, more coherent in policy and more consistent in practice than is often realized. Gladstone's third administration in 1886 attempted to pacify Ireland by granting Home Rule and in doing so provided one of the most exciting and controversial twelve months in British politics since the Civil War. These volumes include not only the daily text of Gladstone's private diaries (maintained almost without a break) but also all of his Cabinet Minutes, hitherto unpublished and themselves a remarkable, and for the Victorian period, unique diary of decision-making. There are over 1400 of the letters (the vast majority hitherto unpublished) which he wrote in those years. These letters flesh out the daily diary and the Cabinet Minutes, and cover the Church, the Queen and the Court, literature, theatre, art, and domestic affairs. There is much material in these volumes on Gladstone's unsuccessful but repeated attempts to retire from political office. The volumes offer an extraordinary narrative of great force, a remarkable mixture of achievement and disappointment, of bold legislation and administrative and political disasters. They display some of the innermost thoughts of an astonishing political personality which mesmerized contemporaries and has continued to fascinate historians and general readers.

Book Creole

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sybil Kein
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2000-08
  • ISBN : 0807142050
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Creole written by Sybil Kein and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2000-08 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word Creole evokes a richness rivaled only by the term's widespread misunderstanding. Now both aspects of this unique people and culture are given thorough, illuminating scrutiny in Creole, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary history of Louisiana's Creole population. Written by scholars, many of Creole descent, the volume wrangles with the stuff of legend and conjecture while fostering an appreciation for the Creole contribution to the American mosaic. The collection opens with a historically relevant perspective found in Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson's 1916 piece "People of Color of Louisiana" and continues with contemporary writings: Joan M. Martin on the history of quadroon balls; Michel Fabre and Creole expatriates in France; Barbara Rosendale Duggal with a debiased view of Marie Laveau; Fehintola Mosadomi and the downtrodden roots of Creole grammar; Anthony G. Barthelemy on skin color and racism as an American legacy; Caroline Senter on Reconstruction poets of political vision; and much more. Violet Harrington Bryan, Lester Sullivan, Jennifer DeVere Brody, Sybil Kein, Mary Gehman, Arthi A. Anthony, and Mary L. Morton offer excellent commentary on topics that range from the lifestyles of free women of color in the nineteenth century to the Afro-Caribbean links to Creole cooking. By exploring the vibrant yet marginalized culture of the Creole people across time, Creole goes far in diminishing past and present stereotypes of this exuberant segment of our society. A study that necessarily embraces issues of gender, race and color, class, and nationalism, it speaks to the tensions of an increasingly ethnically mixed mainstream America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An African proverb states, When a man knows his proverbs, he can reconcile his differences. A similar sentiment can be said about poetry; if a man knows his poetry, he can overcome heavy burdens and add flavor to life experiences. The poems in this book were born out of my experiences with romance, love, joy, happiness, pain, fear, sadness and anxiety emotions all people experiences. The poetry in this book is far more than just words. These words are a life force captured from moments in time, much like images caught on a video tape or music recorded on a cd. This book looks at intimate daily experiences and the natural world around us. Reflect, meditate, and ponder to look for hidden truth and meaning in each poem. Step into the world of in depth feelings, along with the ecstasy of expression.
