It is nearly nine years since the first edition was published and it has now been for some time out of print. As was stated in the preface it was a part only of a wider inquiry. Its object was intentionally restricted to the study of the tribal system in Wales preparatory to the extension of the inquiry to other tribal systems. This course was adopted in the hope that the previous study of the strictly Welsh evidence might be used as a key to the understanding of Germanic tribal custom, and so eventually aid in the elucidation of some of the difficult problems involved in the conditions of early Anglo-Saxon society. What did they do, what did they take with them in their baggage, and what did they bring back?
